RE: TC vs Pull Behind...????

Had a TC and traded in for a TT for more room (kids were still with us and GROWING). The increased interior room was nice, but.....
Then we found out how limiting a 50+' combo can be. Much more difficult to stop at attractions or stores on the way to our destination.
Back to a much more maneuverable truck/TC.
Eric (kohldad) is right- a hardside with electric jacks makes loading/unloading SO much easier.

RE: Any last comments and or thoughts on Lance 1172???

Tim,
First and most important- THANK YOU for your service to our country. You folks put it all on the line and we appreciate what you do for us.
To add to Fred's post, be aware of weight. While I don't own an 1172, we do have a 2012 Lance 855S. The Lance website shows the 855S base weight of 2650#. With the fresh water tank and propane full plus groceries, kitchen equipment and minimal personal gear (we avoid bringing all kinds of extra stuff along) our camper is right around 3500#.
So keep an eye on weight- just filling the 1172 fresh and propane tanks will put you over 4000# and I think once you are ready to travel, you will easily be between 4500# and 5000#, possibly over.
But if you have the truck that can handle this weight, you have chosen a great TC- this is our 4th TC and third different brand. Lance quality is up there with the others.
Best of luck with it and happy traveling.

RE: Tundra with a Lance 865

Isn't the Tundra considered a 1/2 ton plus?
Lance shows the 865 and the 825 compatible with the Tundra.
The truck you saw needs a bit of rear suspension help though.

Northstar does. Others might.
This is on the curb side- it folds out from behind the dinette.

RE: $899 EU2000i Honda did not show up.....

WOW.
This guy is excited! It's just a flippin' generator.
A few years ago I walked into our local Honda dealer. Asked them to plug a 2000 into our TC and made sure that it ran our A/C. They were happy to do it.
It did and $950 later it was in my truck.
No delivery maybe, no unknown. Supported a local business. DONE.

RE: Generator storage?

We have carried our 2000 inside the camper but forward on the floor against the front wall. Turn it sideways and stick foam or a folded towel between the front wall and the gen.
Never smells. (keep the vented cap closed)
We have also carried it in the truck cab behind the front seat.
I would hesitate to have it at the back of the camper. Run into something solid or worse, have a head-on collision and that 45# generator will become a missile. Yeah, I know- one in a million, but why risk it when 8' further ahead would be better.
But up on the roof?? IMHO (and others) NOT a good idea.

RE: TC organization

Years ago we went from a TC to a TT as the kids grew.
Later, the kids were on their own so we went back to a TC.
Before trading in the TT, I emptied out all the compartments. WOW- what a pile was on the garage floor. I thinned it out quite a bit to fit into the newer TC.
Haven't missed any of the stuff that I eliminated.

RE: Question about standard jack practice

We have had several TCs with electric jacks.
Using all extend or all retract I have noticed that one of the rear jacks will slightly lift off the ground. I'll stop and adjust just that one. Then continue with all 4. May have to do it 1, 2 or 3 times depending on how level the ground is.
But have never heard one binding/screaming or making unusual noises.

RE: Palomino Maverick - Good? Problems? 1st TC. Advice welcome.

These folks have been around for quite a while OERV
When we have been looking at RVs, one sign of quality is to look EVERYWHERE. Open all closets and compartments. Is what you see well built and somewhat carefully assembled or does it look like a high school shop project gone bad?

RE: My possible first Truck Camper! What do you guys think?

Us?
2012 Chevy 2500HD crewcab 4x4 shortbed
Added:
-tires rated at 3970# each
-airbags
-"Big Wig" swaybar
2012 Lance 855S
Loaded- right around 3500#+/-
I would take this combo across the country tomorrow. We are planning to go to Newfoundland or California in 2 years.
Handles great.(10 years ago I had one combo that was a white knuckle ride, so I know what bad is)

RE: Need some help since I'm new & basically clueless

The post above is some good information.
Find your weight numbers then go to this "sticky" TC info
You are definitely going to need to downsize your truck camper search. Think 8' or smaller and as light as possible.
Worse case is that you buy a large camper that scares the *** out of you as you drive down the road- way overloaded. Then you either trade down to a smaller camper or trade up to a truck that can carry it.

RE: The Emotions in a TC

There's a certain satisfaction that comes with pulling into a park site next to a 5th wheeler (or trailer), jumping out of the cab, plugging in the electric, pulling out a chair, grabbing a beer and sitting down like there's nothing to it.
Funny you mention that.
Couple months ago we went to this very small but VERY clean and neat campground.
At the front office we pulled in behind a 5th wheel that had arrived a few minutes before us. Cathy checked us in and we ended up driving in behind the 5th. We found our site and they were 3 spots further around the access circle.
We were hooked up with water and electric, had extended the slide-out and Cathy was walking our pup. I was sitting down with a JD on the rocks. 20 minutes later they had their 5th wheel where they wanted it and disconnected. They still were cranking down stabilizers and arranging all kinds of other stuff.
I like our less complex camper. ;)

RE: The Emotions in a TC

About 10 years ago we traded in our TC and bought a 24' Nash TT, because the 2 kids were getting too big for the truck camper.
Now I was driving a 50' train around. We found out how easy it had been to park the truck/TC and how much towing a TT limited where we could go. One time we arrived early at an aquarium and even though I thought I had us parked in a good spot- far end of the large parking lot with a good escape route- we came out to find our truck and TT trapped by several randomly abandoned vehicles.
Gone were the easy lunch stops on our way to a campground. Much more planning to fuel up in small towns.
Sure the increased TT floor plan was nice, but we value the mobility more.
TCs for us.

RE: Bike racks, so many choices

Ryan,
What bikes are you carrying? Mountain, road, hybrid? That will matter.
Do you want to carry the bikes by the frame or by the front drop-outs and rear wheel?
You might want one that folds flat against the grille when not carrying bikes.

RE: Truck Camper Magazine will be on ABC World News Tonight

I am in our local government and learned that while you can give the media all kinds of info, they are going to edit until they get just the desired effect.
Mainstream media caters mainly to an audience with the attention span of a gnat. What's cool right this second will be ignored pretty soon.
The aspects of RVs (and truck campers in particular) that we love and understand are not of interest to most folks- given that fact, ABC probably gave that segment an appropriate amount of air time- not that I agree with them!
I do feel bad for Gordon and Angela. I read how much effort and time they put into this.

RE: '12 F350 and our Lance

Congrats, but there is no way it is stable because it's not a drw. ;) :B
Dianne,
You do realize that all the DRW advocate's heads are going to be exploding, right?? :):W
Good decision on the larger cab. Last summer we traded in the x-cab chevy for a crewcab. MUCH better. Our 1 year old German Shepard's bed fits back there nicely- she approves also.
Best of luck with the new truck- looks like you are off to a great start already.

RE: Lance 855S

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
OK, here is our input.
We had a 2011 Lance 825. Good for the 2 of us but then a large dog joined our family.
We found a barely used 2012 855S, pretty well equipped.
We have it on a 2012 Chevy 2500. Airbags and "BigWig" swaybar plus 4 new tires rated at 3970# capacity each.
You have a good start with your 1 ton truck, but keep in mind that the 855S is heavy. Ready to roll down the road (30 gal water, 2 full propane tanks and minimal other stuff (clothes, misc plus kitchen gear, maybe about 200-250#), I think that we are near 3500#.
You need to know that most larger truck campers add considerable mass to your truck (not that this should scare you) but keep in mind that some folks will say "I don't even know that it is there". Don't listen to that.
Good luck with your RV search. Let us know how things work out.

RE: Inside Shower vs Outside Shower

Our Lance TC is "4 season certified"
We use it 8 months of the year. Wouldn't own an RV without an indoor shower.
I have used the indoor shower several times when the outside temperature is below freezing. Try that with the outside shower.
For us the outside shower is for muddy boots, the dog and mountain bikes.
