RE: UPS Shipping to Canada

UPS shipping is a deal breaker for me as well. Crazy high fees and customer service for complaints on a mistake they made was virtually non-existent.

RE: Long Box--Short Box?

I have a crew cab long box and I can see the hitch just fine. If I couldn't, I'd still go with long box and just put one on those mirrors on there.

RE: CO/Propane detector

They do make combo LP/CO detectors: I installed one in mine last year after my propane detector failed due to water infiltration. It has led's to show wether it is alarming for propane or CO.

RE: 5th wheel hitch that attaches to gooseneck ball?

Nope. The companion doesn't actually hook to the ball: it fits into a square hole in the box. Their ball is on a square pole. When removed and "turned over" and reinstalled, it leaves the box flat.

It was 28 degrees here too! Of course, we use Celsius. ;) Pretty bad when you you gotta go to Canada for warm weather.

RE: Ford f250 diesel

They may be making more power but not in relation to the amount of fuel being burned. Some of the chipped trucks I've seen, yes, the tuner sucks. Many are doing it for show. Like I said, on my model I can install a switch that causes it to smoke like snot but with less power. Same thing happens if the turbo variable vanes stick open, or if an injector sticks open. Sometimes on a real cold start it smokes, shakes and rattles. Won't hardly pull itself though. Competition trucks are also made for show. As long as there is enough fuel in the tank to get the drag to the end of the track, burning some extra to please the crowd is no big deal.
While a properly tuned diesel may smoke a little under hard acceleration, those ones that pour soot constantly are mis-tuned. I have had my diesel for 4 years and there is no soot on my 5th wheel.

RE: AARRGGHH!!! Double Rant! Long even!-Update

Continue making miracles happen: turn her down every time. I have had to distance myself from this sob story type person before. Luckily, I don't feel guilty about it. It helps living in a place where the only people without jobs either legitimately can't work or don't want to work. If you aren't part of the former group, bugger off. There's no such thing as unable to find work in this town.
Most recently the wife befriended a woman and her kids as they were passing by our place just as a freak voilent rain storm happened. She invited them in, dried them off and lent her kids some dry clothing (close in age to our own kids) Turns out they were new neighbors and the wife and her became friends. A few months later, they were out of work, behind on rent, water cut off so kids were bathing at her parents house, out of food and milk (invited them over for lunch a bunch of times, for the kids sake), always wanting to borrow something (I disallowed the wife from "lending" cash early on, though she did pick up groceries on occasion) - however, they NEVER ran out of cigarettes and somehow always found enough money for pot. They always blamed every one else for their situation. The last time she asked for something, the wife said we couldn't help and we haven't heard from her since.

RE: Ford f250 diesel

In a diesel, more fuel = more power, but if the fuel doesn't get burned, its not making power. Throwing fuel at it isn't enough: it has to be injected at the right time. Newer diesels have variable injector timing that changes depending on RPM and load and even does multiple pulses per combustion event. New on the road pick-ups smoke because their owners want them to smoke. (Competition models don't care about mileage so a little unburned extra fuel is no big deal.) I can install a switch on mine that overrides the variable geometry turbo vane orientation and smoke like a bugger on take off.
There is a saying:
Smoke don't mean it's broke!
It means your tuner sucks!

RE: Finding A Sneak Battery Drain WITHOUT Using A Meter?

The light has its uses. I prefer a regular bulb. Some of the neon ones will light up with an extremely small draw, such as the radio computer memory. A meter set to volts has the same issue: A small draw and a dead short will both show up as 12 volts. You have to be careful with an ammeter so you don't fry the meter. If you are lucky it has a fast-blow fuse, but then try to find a replacement fuse. A regular bulb won't light up with "normal" minute draw and won't blow even with a dead short to ground. It is also easier to "read" while laying upside down under the dash.
One tip - if the door or compartment where the fuses you are checking are
located has a courtesy light, pull that fuse first or your test light will never go out. ;)

RE: Finding A Sneak Battery Drain WITHOUT Using A Meter?

I have a meter but I have also used a 12 volt trouble light. It comes with alligator clips and a long cord so you can bring it to where you can see it while looking for draws.

RE: RoadLife Blows Up

Extreme over-revving will cause the same type of galling on pistons and bearing surfaces that is found in no-lube failures. I have seen it several times in small engines that have had their governors seize up.

RE: 5th Wheel Hitch/Gooseneck Hitch adapters.

Check how the various laws are worded. In places where ball type hitches require chains, it doesn't matter where the ball is mounted: receiver, bumper, bed, 1" above the bed, etc.. If it uses a ball, it needs chains.
If I want the bed empty and I don't feel like lugging the hitch out, I just leave it hooked up, pull the four pins, lift the front of the trailer up and drive out from underneath.

Holy cow - did anyone notice the OP is in Canada? They are ALL foreign manufacturers.
If there is no brand preference, test drive them all and buy the one he likes best. When my father switched from Ford to Dodge, the deciding factor was that none of the Fords (cars) he tried were comfortable for him.
