Intermittent Air Conditioning Problem

Here lately, my air conditioning blows warm air at idle. After I start rolling and at higher speeds it blows cold air fine. This has been an intermittent problem for a couple of months. Any suggestions as to the problem? The air-conditioning system on my 2002 SuperDuty has never been worked on and has about 177K on it. Thanks in advance.

RE: Tightening Air Condition Gasket

Thanks, folks. It ain't broke, so I will not try to fix it yet. We have so many happy, trouble free miles on our little trailer it was just one of those things I thought I might need to give maintenance to.IF it does start to leak, remember, the unit of measure for tightening those bolts is "INCH pounds", not foot pounds. Also, if you do decide to tighten them, pick a nice hot sunny day and loosen the bolts completely, allowing the gasket to relax for about 6-8 hours, then retighten to the correct "inch pounds" specs. Gracious, more good advice. I appreciate the information so much. What a good resource we have in this forum.

RE: Added Value of Bearing Repacking

Sorry, Goingnorth, I missed your question. I try to replace the entire brake assemblies at about four years. We bought our trailer new in November of 2009.

Tightening Air Condition Gasket

We a 2009 ducted Dometic 13.5 airconditioner on our trailer It seems somewhere I saw a picture of the screws that need tightening to compress the gaskets to prevent leaks as preventive maintenance. Anyone have a picture, link or diagram of the screws and their location inside the trailer's unit? Thanks in advance.

RE: Check Your Marker Lights

Diskdoctr: Good information. I bet a lot of people do not know this, including myself. Over the years I have talked to several body shop repair folks who say they wash down all their vehicles with Dawn detergent prior to expensive paint jobs. They tell me Dawn is the only thing that will remove silicone traces left behind from waxes, ect.

RE: Check Your Marker Lights

During the marker light rehab, I have truly found that silicone is your worst enemy, as mentioned in some other threads and post on this forum. It is extremely hard to completely remove. As mentioned above, our trailer is four years old and some of the silicone caulk was starting to turn loose on the edges, which I suspect allowed a little moisture to penetrate the joint between the marker light housings and the trailer's fiberglass walls and ends. Not sure if UV rays caused the silicone caulk to break down or just continued movement of the trailer over many miles. I believe the Proflex is a much better product, IMO, and will hold up better.

RE: Check Your Marker Lights

Our travel trailer will be four years old this fall. We have pulled it a lot through may states. Happy times! Been a wonderful little trailer, no problems other than those self inflected by me!

RE: Looking at 2013 Grey Wolf 28BH

We have a friend and his wife bought a 2012 Greywolf. Believe it is about 26 ft long. They have had absolutely no problems with it and have used it a lot with their children. Sure, it is a basic entry level, no frill model with bunks, but it works just fine for them, as their budget would not allow a more expensive trailer. And it lets their family get into the marvelous world of camping.

Check Your Marker Lights

Somewhere on this great forum I read marker lights on trailers and fifth wheels were the biggest sources of leaks. Having completed my roof upgrades with Eternabond tape, this year I decided I would pull a marker light out and check it to see how it was sealed. To my surprise, the caulk sealing the marker light was silicone. And had started to turn loose after nearly four years of happy use. Too, our trailer must sit outside uncovered. Also to my surprise, the metal screws holding the fixture were starting to rust, indicating that there has been moisture getting by the silicone sealant. So I have begun taking off all the marker lights and resealing them. I use Doublestick Eternbond on the screwholes and large hole for the electrical wires. Then I used Geocell Proflex as the final top seal and side seal of each marker light. Also, while reassembling the marker lights, I opted to use stainless steel screws, instead of the zinc coated steel screws. My trailer has eleven marker lights on it. So far, about half of the screws have had rust on them. So do not take for granted your marker lights are 100% sealed like me.

RE: True LT tire ?????

I have had a set for several weeks now without any problems at all. In fact, I have bought the older LTX/MS Michelins for all our vehicles during the last fifteen years without any problems. Also, I have had two test pulls for short distances. While I did not think it was possible, these new LTX/MS2 tires in 265/75/16E handle our travel trailer even better than our previous older design LTX/MS series. And that says a lot. Time will tell, however, and I hope they continue to perform as well as my other Michelin tires. I sure hope so. Gracious, tires have increased in price since four years ago.

RE: Help Shopping: Half ton

If buying a new truck, I would sure consider getting the three quarter ton truck with a 4.10 rear axle. Safety for your family and others is a big issue and the three quarter ton will have larger brakes, suspension, tires, and transmission which all add up to a better, safer tow vehicle. If you plan on keeping the truck for as long as you say for 11 plus years, the slightly higher cost of a three quarter ton will be very little spread out over 11 years. Plus, you will enjoy towing a dry 5,500 trailer much better, IMO. Good luck on your decision.

RE: Michelin LTXMS2

Update: Have had the new Michelin LTX/MS2 tires for well over a week now. Had several short highway trips and so far, I am very pleased. Excellent ride, quiet and and rock solid control.

RE: Broke my TV torque wrench

I have been using a Kobalt from Lowes. Paid about $100 for it on sale several years ago and it has held up well. However, I would also look at Sears at their Craftsman torque wrenches. They usually have some high quality tools with a good warranty. For a good torque wrench that will hold its accuracy these days, I imagine they will start at around $200. Sorry, no help on infrared readers.

RE: Ford AIS filter?

My Ford Severe Duty AIS system is about five years old. I expect to get a minimum of 50K miles before I even consider changing this current filter element. And therein lies a very cost effective feature, not to mention more closed hood time, having a higher air flow and probably one of the best diesel air filtering system on the planet.

RE: Ford AIS filter?

Colliehauler: Sorry I could not help more. The Ford dealer is the only place I have found them and they do not seem to vary in price much.

RE: Ford AIS filter?

AIS is a term used for Air Intake Systems, usually when discussing diesel truck engines, as they take must take in and filter much more air into their engines than a gasoline powered truck. To the best of my memory, Ford 7.3L Powerstroke diesel trucks were used so much by the military and oil companies in very harsh and sandy conditions overseas that Ford had a company named Donaldson develop a system designated the "Ford Severe Duty Air Intake System", that would filter air in their engines many times better and hold more dirt much longer than Ford's normal pleated original equipment air intake filters. I believe Donaldson also made air filters for our military tanks for use in the desert. The Ford Severe Air Intake System is available through Ford dealerships. I have one for my truck and they are great. Much more closed hood time. I bought my last replacement filter through my Ford dealership. Seems like the replacement filter was about $70, but my memory is not what it used to be.

RE: Wax for fiberglass travel trailer...

I do not wax any more. I use 303 Aerospace Protectant due to its UV blocking characteristics, as our trailer sits outside.

RE: I-40 Condition - Little Rock, Ark to Memphis, Tenn

Yep. The eastbound route has been a lesser problem than westbound, IMO. It is just the 85 mile stretch coming out of Memphis headed west to Little Rock that will shake the fillings out of your teeth, not to mention what it does to your travel trailer or fifth wheel. As mentioned above, apparently it is under construction and being elevated, but just thought someone might have traveled it recently. I know some traffic has been rerouted to H. 70 which parallels I-40.

RE: I-40 Condition - Little Rock, Ark to Memphis, Tenn

Our route will take us west from Memphis Tennessee to Texarkana, Texas. I-40 from Memphis to Little Rock has always been terrible towing a trailer.
