RE: Texas Hill Country

Buffalo Wings, something different

I marinated the wings all night in an orange sauce called Iron Chef Orange sauce, found along with the bbq sauces, etc.
an hour or so before cooking, I dumped in a pouch of McCormick's Buffalo Wings original coating, mixed it good with the saucy wings.
I don't like it real hot. If you do, add some cayenne pepper to the mccormick's mix or add some tabasco.
cook at 450 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.
very tasty

RE: Custer State Park

custer state park is a great place to stay, very scenic.
I would stay at Game Lodge campground (water, dump station and elec hookups)
because it is closest to a very scenic route to Mt. Rushmore.
from the campground, go east and then north on highway 16A.
it circles around to highway 244 and Mt. Rushmore.
the park will have a map showing the roads.
when you continue on west to yellowstone, you can take 16 west out of Custer over to Newcastle, WY and then head in whichever direction you were planning to go.

RE: Death Valley in the Summer

if you're just going to drive through Death Valley, then the heat of the summer won't kill you as long as your a/c is working.
just be sure to take a couple gallon jugs of water with you, or an ice chest loaded down with water and pop or whatever.
and stay on the main road.

RE: Route 83 north out of Texas....

one more alternative is to cut across country at Paducah on 62 to Matador, then north on 70 to Turkey, then west on 86 toward I-27.
this takes you by Caprock Canyons State Park, very nice little park.
and also close by Palo Duro Canyon State Park off I-27.
the roads are fine.

RE: Route 83 north out of Texas....

well, we use 83 going north a lot, but we don't catch it out of Kerrville.
We catch it off I-10 at Junction.
we get diesel at the Flying J at Tye, just west of Abilene, then head on north on 83. you can take the county road flanking the truckstop and it takes you to 83.
there's a real nice little county rv park with elec hookups and dump etc. about 15 miles south of Shamrock TX.. on the south fork of the Red River.
then there is plenty of overnight parking available in Shamrock in town on the west side of the road where the McDonald's is.. you'll see trucks parked in there.

RE: Quartzsite What is this place all about you ask?

it's not a place I'm interested in staying more than a couple days...just long enough to browse the kiosks. DH likes looking at tools; I like looking at gems and rocks. You can find good buys on that stuff.
but overall, as a camping area, I find it windy, dusty and seedy looking.

RE: Stovepipe Wells RV Park

since it's a holiday, you might should make reservations if full hookups are really important to you.
if not, the other campground is adjacent to the full hookups and probably won't be full.
the campground has a great view of the sierras to the west.
no shade trees, but you won't need them in late Nov. probably.
Gravel, sand parking lot campground.
There is a motel and store and maybe a snack bar or cafe.
If the fly boys are flying runs out of China Lake, they might come flying over late in the evenings... but won't do it all night long.

RE: advise on route from seattle south

the only steep part I recall on I 84 is when you climb out of Pendleton, OR (going east)...that will be a pretty hefty climb.
this route can be dicey in winter..watch the weather report for the days you'll be on it.
and
if you're going on east on I-80, you'll have another pass, this time a long descent, from Laramie down to Cheyenne, and this is definitely another stretch of road to be mindful of the weather.

RE: North Kansas City campground

I can't think of any rv parks other than Basswood up on the north side.
I searched rv parks for kansas city, mo. north and got a couple of trailer parks that also welcome rvs.
then I found this one at Holt, MO

RE: Pots 'n Pans ??

one 12 inch iron skillet, 2 1/2 inches deep, with lid.
one enamel covered steel soup pot with lid... about 6 qt size.
one half gallon cooking pan with lid.
one dinky little sauce pan
one crock pot
one elec skillet for frying fish outside
I'm thinking of replacing the big iron skillet with a smaller one, 8" and 2 inch deep.. since I really don't use the big skillet... but will agree that it is an all purpose piece of cookery.

RE: What The Best Overall Knife To Use.

I use Wustof, too.
a slicer with a 6" blade
and a paring knife.
these I use every day.
Also have a fillet knife, butcher knife, bread knife and steel.
but I don't use them very much.

RE: Campgrounds from Ft. Worth to Casa Grande AZ

Balmorhea State Park at Balmorhea, TX.
At Fort Stockton, there's an rv park about 2 miles east of town and there's a couple in town..nothing fancy, just good for overnights and inexpensive.
There are some decent rv parks in Demming NM...just drive into town along the main drag.
Benson AZ has some decent ones.

RE: Yellowstone in the Spring

the park roads don't open until mid May, so there's your starting date.
we were there in early June about 3-4 years ago, and it was very nice with mild days and cool nights.
the crowds are smaller.
Bridge Bay is the most central campground to Yellowstone. Make reservations as early as you can.
It will take you a full day to make each of the two loops in the park, and that's just if you're content with brief stops at the main sites.
I like to plan on seeing Old Faithful around lunch or supper time. Upon arrival at the area, we go into the Snow Lodge and check the clock on the wall to see what time the geyser is expected to blast off. Then we eat first and watch the show or do the reverse.. Do take the tour of the old lodge.. very interesting.
Another day trip is one that goes out the northeast gate to Cooke City MT and then on to the top of Beartooth Pass. Then back up to the Chief Joseph highway and down to Cody and back into Yellowstone via the east gate.
Don't omit going south into Grand Teton Park. It's one of the topmost beautiful sights you'll see on this continent. Go all the way down to Jackson.

If I remember correctly, there is a very nice welcome center rest stop just north of Corpus Christi right on the Nueces River. Seems like there are plenty of parking spaces.

RE: San Antonio-best route around, thru?

ditto to staying on 281.
be prepared for the traffic to get bad on 281 a few miles north of loop 1604.
the stop lights back up the traffic.
but once you get past the loop, you should be able to sail right through.. depending on the time of day.. avoid 5 pm to 7 pm or 7 am to 9 am.
