RE: Maine Coast

I agree with all the posters about your missing the foliage. However, the Boothbay area is a wonderful place to visit at any time, especially in September after the tourists have left. It is a good base for getting out and doing daytrips. Weather is generally very nice. Boothbay harbor has the Balmy Days II ferryboat going out to Monhegan Island. This is a beautiful, charming island 12 miles off the mainland. Take one of the easy hikes to the lighthouse there, enjoy a lobster roll, and return late in the afternoon.
If you kayak, there are tours right there in Boothbay Harbor, in which the guides are very knowledgeable and no experience is necessary. Drive to nearby Pemaquid Point or Port Clyde for some pretty views and pictures. Lots of lighthouses along the coast worth seeing, especially Marshall Point in Port Clyde, where the movie, "Forest Gump" was filmed.
Then, of course, are the Botannical Gardens in Boothbay, and several nice walks in the Reserve. As a sidenote, we always stay at Shore Hills Campground. No pools if you are looking for amenities, but nice sites right on the marsh, where the tides come and go. Nice owners; sites are roomy, quiet and clean. We love it there.

RE: Yellowstone Trip Report - Stumps is BACK

We, too, returned from GTNP and Yellowstone in late June.
Both are really unique. We couldn't take the rv due to time restraints, but stayed in some decent places. In fact, the cabins at Roosevelt were very much like staying in our rv...with maid service!
We took one day and drove the Beartooth Highway. The views are gorgeous. Still snow at one section, and there was skiing there.
We drove to Red Lodge, MT and back.
Regarding the bison, we were stuck on a road as two were walking down the middle. Some dumb driver insisted on going around the first bison, and he turned that 300-lb head of his and took the bumper off the car! Try explaining that to the rental car company!
Yellowstone and Grand Teton Nat'l Parks are not to be missed in our opinion. We can't wait to return some day.

RE: New England Trip

Hmmm. We're from Maine. We have never seen a live moose here, other than a penned-in one at the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray. Just deceased ones on the side of the road. We had to get out to Yellowstone and GTNP in June to see one, so don't get your hopes up too high! Just pray that you don't see one on the hood of your car. :(

RE: Yellowstone. first extended trip for us ???

Well, we just returned from 6 days in Yellowstone NP and another 6 in Grand Teton National Park, and I wouldn't have wanted to spend any less time in either one. Both are unique and beautiful. We'd rather spend more time in one lovely place than to see it from a vehicle or just a brief ride through. We once spent 6 hours at Bryce and I felt robbed. (It was on a bus tour). In any event, have a wonderful trip! -Dianne

RE: Trip Journal

I keep a log of every trip we go on, even if it's just over a night or two to somewhere close by. There were times I wondered if it was silly, but we have used that log time and time again to recall different details we have forgotten. I handwrite it, and include pictures. It may be useless to anyone else reading it, but we love looking back and recalling the memories. Almost like being able to relive it all over again!

RE: Something to ponder... from the other side

I really thank you for posting this. I, for one, feel lucky to have some beautiful campgrounds to stay in here in the Northeast. I could never handle what campgrounds owners are faced with. That's why I'm in accounting with a padded cubicle to work from. There are too many rude people these days who have a sense of entitlement.

RE: Travel novels

I made my visit to the local library and chatted with the librarian. I think she noticed the desperation of a frustrated traveller! She pointed out a few more. Any comments welcomed:
"Roads" by Larry McMurtry
"North Country - A Personal Journey" by Howard Frankmosher
"A Life On The Road" by Charles Kuralt
A Frommers Book entitled "Exploring America by RV" by Shirley Slater and Harry Basch
I had to control myself and take home just one book this time, and that was "Blue Highway". Thanks for all your responses.

Travel novels

Does anyone have any good recommendations for travel novels? These seems to be my only interest lately. If I can't travel, it's nice to read about other's travels. -Dianne
