RE: 5th Wheel Hitches

Another vote for the TrailerSaver, we’ve had ours for about 2 years now and it’s a great hitch. In fact we are in the market for a new truck and the main thing I want is a truck that I can still use my TrailerSaver in, basically a long box. They do make an attachment that I can add on to the TrailerSaver to make it a slider, but it’s manual and I’ll not sure I want to go that way.

RE: Pulling A Fiver With A Extended Cab

What I like about the Superglide is that it automatically moves the trailer away from the cab. We pull our fiver 7-10,000 miles a year and after getting beat up with the bad roads out there we bought a Trailer Saver Air Hitch and what a big difference it made, they make a great product. Trailer Saver does make an attachment for my hitch that would make it a slider, but it’s not automatic, I feel that could be a problem. The extended cab has worked great for us but my dealer tells me that the 3500 Chevy in 2014 they won’t be available. Yesterday he did find a 2013 one with the LTZ package about 500 miles from here, I told him I’d take it, but it was sold when he called. Like I said a 3500 crew cab with a long box really makes it harder to get around, but maybe we should test drive one and see what parking it is like, or put some money into what we have. Thanks for all the comments.

Pulling A Fiver With A Extended Cab

I know I’m a creature of habit but I like the truck I have but decided it was time for a new one. We pull our fiver 5-7 months a year and what we enjoy is finding a place to stay for a week or two and explore the area. We use the truck for shopping and exploring and the longer the truck the harder to explore. I also like the long box so I just don’t have to worry about sharp turns. Our extended cab long box has worked and I just wanted a new one. I’m not bad mouthing crew cabs, but today they rule. A long box crew is really a long truck. I feel that with a short box we will need a slider, plus less storage space. We now carry my wife’s handicap scooter behind the hitch. Chevy in 2014 no longer will make an extended cab and Ford only has them in their lower models, not sure about Ram. Extended Cabs-A Thing Of The Past The bottom line is I’m just need to change my thinking, wait a minute maybe I’ll just fix up the one I have.

RE: 5th Wheel Hitches

This is one of those questions that what people have is probably what they will suggest. Our first hitch was a Reese and it worked great. We started traveling more and more so we now have a air hitch and really like it.

RE: Long Box--Short Box?

I'm the OP-- We made an offer today on a 2013 - 3500 Chevy crew cab short box, we’ll see if the dealer takes it or not. After calculating the curve of our Cameo front cap, the height of the truck compared to these curves and the extended pin it looked like I needed 40” of clearest and the crew cab comes in at 43”. But just in case I found that the Hensley Trailer Saver Air Hitch has a slider attachment that I can add to our existing air hitch if needed, if my math failed me, I have an option. Thanks for all the post and great discussion.

RE: Long Box--Short Box?

Thanks for all the replies, I’m the OP. We are looking at buying a new truck, a one-ton this go around, and more than likely a Chevy we’ve had good luck with the one we have, but we are looking at all our options. Right now Chevy has some good rebates on 2013, but in a 300-mile radius from us they can’t find one extended cab only crew cabs. So the reason for my post was what it was like to hook up our trailer up with a crew compared to an extended cab. The other thing is we have a “Trailer Saver air hitch” which is not a slider, but is the best investment we’ve made and I want to keep it. The Chevy has a 6-½ box; we have an extended pin on our trailer and with the edges on our trailer curved in it looks like we won’t need a slider. Some of you pointed out the potential problem with uneven ground, something to consider. The wheelbase on a crew cab with the short box and the extended cab with a long box is about the same for the Chevy will check with Ford and Ram. The Chevy has a 36-gallon tank for both trucks, again I can’t find that info on the others in their literature so will go back and ask the dealers. Right now with my extended cab I can see the pin to hook up with no problems so I was just curious if those that have crew cabs could see their pins.

Long Box--Short Box?

Thinking of going from a extended cab long box to a crew cab short box and was wondering how much difference will it be to hook up. Now I can see my pin and hitch and I’m not sure with a crew cab that still will be true?

RE: Cab to trailer clearance

I don't know if you have a hitch already, or can borrow one if you already have the rails. I Meashured my trailers width and divided it in half. Then Meashure from the back window to the center of where the hitch would be in tow mode. If it is a lot less than the width of your trailer divided in half then I would get a slider. Example. My trailer is 97" wide in front. Half that is 48.5". The meashurement between my aluminum back rack and the center of my hitch in fwd position is 36.5" So I bought a slider. I also opted for the Reese round tube as it had 12" of travel as opposed to the square tube 10" For a rough estimate, you can judge just about where the center of your rear axle is under the bed of your truck, then go 1" inch or so in front of center towards the cab for your reference point. Most hitches run centered over the axle or just in front of it. Good luck. How would you calculate this is you have and extended pin?

RE: Redwood 5th Wheel

When we bought our first fiver we looked at medium priced units like Cedar Creek, Cardinal and Montana. On our present one we looked at moving up and looked at Mobile Suites, Excel, Redwood and Carriage, if we were looking today we would add the new Lifestyle in that category. Mobile Suites and Excel are great rigs but in our case I didn’t want to drive a far larger truck to pull these heavier trailers. We looked real close at the Redwood, but I liked the structural integrity of the Carriage, now being built by the people of Carriage by Lifestyle.

RE: Morryde pin box

Our last fiver had a Trail-Air and our new one came with the MOR/ryde. I like the Trail Air for taking the pounding out of the ride. We ended up buying a air hitch and now have the best of both worlds.

RE: Fifth wheel hitch

They cost more money, but if you are going to be on the road a lot you can't beat an air hitch, or air pin. If it fits into the budget also look at a good suspicions system on the trailer. The condition of the road sure can do damage to your trailer.

RE: New RV Travel Guide From Good Sam

We put the new RV Travel Guide away and got out our old Woodall west guide to use--its easier.

New RV Travel Guide From Good Sam

The one thing I liked about the old Woodall campground guide was we could buy a West or East guide. With the new combined guide you can only get one large cumbersome RV Travel Guide. I would like to suggest that you offer an east and west guide that would be easier to use while on the road to use. Thanks

RE: People Are Traveling Again

We retired in 1999 and started RVing 5-7 months a year. When we first started it was almost mandatory to have reservations. In fact it became a rule we would stay put at a campground over weekends because it was so hard to find a place. In 2006-07 things really changed and getting a site was not a problem. We did see some of our favorite campground close. But you’re right the last several years we find new owners at these locations and campground are filling up. I’m glad to see that RVing is slowly picking up as is the economy. When we first retired campground prices were $12-15 a night, now they are $30 and higher a night.

Using My I-Phone to Hook Up My Trailer

I’m using my “gyro level” phone app on my I-phone to set my 5th wheel for the right height to hook up and it works great. I placed the phone with the level app on our trailer before I unhook and write down the degrees off level it was before I unhooked. Hooking up I set the height using the phone app to that height---back right up and hook up. No need to get out and check that the trailer is at the right height.

RE: CB radio usage

Channel 13 is a great idea for RVers, but it won’t work unless RVers promote the use of it. Several ideas, one put a sign on your RV, one big enough for other to see that you use Channel 13. Even when you’re not on the road others will see it at RV parks and other places you travel. Pick a date say i.e., Memorial Day week-end, that all RVers with a CB are going to be on Channel 13 and find ways to promote the heck out of it. Facebook, blogers, forums, signs on your RV, RV clubs, etc. Back in the seventies that’s what the truckers did to promote their channel, and today with the Internet you have far more ways of promoting it.

RE: no trailer for 8 weeks

Our last trailer took 8 weeks for us to get. On the other hand we ordered what we wanted, and it was fun wanting with expectations. Big kids Christmas.

RE: CB radio usage

Just at a sign company in our home town. I made come clips and hung in on the latter. I could take it off if I needed to use the latter.

RE: New to pushers please advise

You’re right about things setting and not being used. I would have it checked out to make sure there is nothing major wrong. If I were buying it I would change ALL the fluids in the engine, transmission and axle. Even if the tires look good setting for that long of time they would need to be replaced. Generators liked to be run, change oil and make sure its working. Check that all the water lines and LP lines are OK. I would explain these things to the seller and see if you can get the price down, but for the right price and some work you would have yourself a great DP—Good luck. We’ve had 3 DP’s like them all.
