RE: Class A length...

Our HR Traveler is listed as 29' but is actually 30' and is identical to the 29' 2-slide Safari Trek from 2004 to almost the present. If you are comfortable with less length a shorter Class A has some great benefits, especially a higher end rig like Holiday Rambler or Safari Trek. With 30 feet you can drive right up to a regular gas pump or up to the front door of WalMart, park in two end to end regular parking spaces at the store or just about any space at any campground. With lots of storage and features like ice-maker, big tanks, 2 electric slides and two-pane windows, just to name a few, you can travel very comfortably. With a shorter rig and no towed car you can go anywhere and pull in to a spot and be set-up in less than 10 minutes. Good for those that travel most of the time. Class A is an RV built from the frame up on a bare frame with engine(no footage defined). Class C is using the front cab of a vehicle only and Class B uses the cab and body with some mods.

RE: Are mice really a problem in Class A's?

We never had a problem but then in the last year or less it has become a problem. I've filled every little crack that was there but the "rats" keep chewing their way in. They just laugh at mothballs and can clean a spring trap with 80% safety (the 20% was a real rat - what a mess). We have to park at home on the dirt(sand) near the barn so the worst possible conditions..

RE: Propane Problem

I would take it to a propane dealer and have him fill it. If it takes a little bit then the pressure valve must be bad. If it takes a lot then the gauge is bad. I would also run it to the point where things stop working and then open the line and see if perhaps the tank is full of water or something else not flamable. I'm not an expert though - just a cut to fit and wire to work guy.....

RE: STARTING BATTERY COMPARTMENT WIRING

You say going to a terminal in the battery compartment. Is that terminal insulated from the chassis or connected to the chassis? Connected makes it a ground so to negative post of battery.

RE: Best way to keep Mice out of the coach?

An entire pan of mothballs had no effect and there is no food in the RV - the mice/rats bring acorns in with them and sit on the carpet and eat the acorns. Somewhere is an opening and so far I can't see any light coming out but somewhere in the engine compartment area is I think a passageway. Very frustrating and the dang things set off traps and eat the seeds or whatever I put in them. I did get one and was surprized how big it was. Still trying for a good solution but wife won't stand for glue traps so I'm stuck for a solution.

RE: Charger or AC/DC converter problem

If the coach battery is dead (really DEAD) then you can sometimes hold down the "boost" switch for a few minutes and get enough charge into it to start the engine on a gas coach. I've unfortunately done it a couple times on mine. While a 50amp hookup is two 110v circuits, that adds up to 220v, it's not actually a 220v circuit. It's really a handle for two seperate 110v circuits that split up the supply of 110volts to seperate 110v items in the RV. That's why it's a different plug and socket from a 220v appliance like a clothes dryer so you don't actually plug into 220v and blow stuff up.

RE: Suburban Furnace Loud noise???

It's random But does it only happen while the RV is moving? That would be consistant with a rock or something in the fan area getting bounced up with a bump in the road.

RE: Offer on our class A

Very very hard to sell any RV right now and dealer knows it's a buyers market. Sounds like you just need to be careful driving while you bite that bullet....

RE: micro wave

I would start the generator and let it warm up and settle in. Then put a meter on an outlet powered by the generator. Watch the meter while starting MW. May give some clues to troubleshoot. I'd then unplug MW from outlet and put the meter on that outlet and see if power was good and stable. If so then MW bad...

RE: winterizing

You didn't mention if you wanted to winterize to store the motorhome or if you want to continue using it during freezing weather. Two schools of thought on storage - fill with antifreeze or totally empty the pipes with compressed air. Personally I like compressed air since as summer approaches you can just add water and drive away without extensive flushing to clear the antifreeze.

RE: Use of levelers

Part of the job of the levelers is to stabilize the coach so it doesn't shake or move as you walk around. To stabilize the coach all of the levelers have to be down so the "UP" side rams go down as well as the "DOWN" side.

RE: Girard GSWH-1M Tankless Water Heater

A tankless water heater needs power that doesn't fluctuate and a constant water speed passing through the heater element(water pressure) to get the temperature adjusted correctly. I can see getting it adjusted when on generator and water pump but on shore power and park water pressure would be a wild ride....

RE: cheaper to buy a pick up truck and a towable trailer?

IMHO it boils down to two questions: What do you want? and What can you afford happily? For some folks it's the "trip" that's most important and they want all the amenities available all the time while traveling so travel in a Class "A". Some folks just "get there" and it's about being there so they have a nice 5th wheel for lots of room and goodies while "there". All the other types and sizes of RV fit in the middle............ It really gets complicated when you add things like traveling with 3 dogs or having disabilities or a bunch of young children.

RE: taxes

If you drive to do volunteer work you can take a mileage deduction. Wonder if you could take the deduction for home to the volunteer workcamp position and back? Could be thousands of miles??? ps - If the "job" requires you live on site it's not usually taxable.

RE: Tire age

The key is the condition of the tires and after 5 years, tires that aren't used very much can be cracked. You need to look on both sides of the tire, especially on the back side. I had a "Brave" a while back that had tires with perfect tread and they looked fine on the frontside due to frequent applications of ArmorAll. The back sides were cracked deeply and had to be replaced right away.

RE: taxes

There are tax deductions applicable to volunteer work. They would apply I would think.

RE: Onan Generator shuts down

The generator gives you an error code when it shuts down. The blinking light on the switch. That can provide a clue. Also you never want to run for any length of time with the cover off as that compromises the cooling. The cover may be crimping the wire to the oil level switch or pushing on it. In my Onan it's right up close to the cover.

RE: Generator power

Guess my RV must be odd man out since the chassis battery starts the generator. House batteries can help via another switch but normally chassis battery starts gen and runs the 2 slides as well.

RE: TV Removal

First thing to remember is that dang thing may be very HEAVY. Ours was also held in place by the wooden frame on all four sides. There was also access from the back through a vent panel. The screw heads that held it in place were hidden by little wooden plugs that had to be removed to get at the screws.
