RE: Towing Shouldn't Be This Difficult - Help Needed

Got ya. That makes more sense now.
Hope you figure it out. Not too fun and relaxing to tow with a rig that does not handle well.

RE: Towing Shouldn't Be This Difficult - Help Needed

The new shop found the ball joints were too tight, not too loose, which I guess is more common (I think?). Anyway, the ball joints are being replaced this morning. Cross your fingers.
Hmmmmmm in 40 years of automotive work I have never heard of too tight of ball joints? :h Wear makes them loose and then you have play in suspension and steering components.

RE: 1986 Chevy G20 3/4 ton, 6.2 Diesel

You'll be fine for what you're trying to do. We towed a race car and trailer for years with the same truck. I did manage to blow up the tranny and torque converter band. Fixed it and off it went. That thing pulled down 24 mpg on the hiway.

Let me refresh your memory.

I guess we are all JA's guys.
Just use the block feature on my posts if you don't like em.

Real easy to solve. Take a picture of your truck with the fuel door open to clearly show the DEF fill port. Done.

RE: Any 13' Ram DEF MPG yet?

I saw on the 2500's they ONLY offer the 3.42's... Thought that was strange?
Not when you have almost 400 HP and over 800 ft/lbs of torque and a 6 speed tranny on tap. :B

RE: New invention could benefit RVers.

Now imagine a 26 ft motorhome that got 16 MPG using the Oldsmobile Toronado drive train (the Olds got around 8 MPG).

1971 Travco.
I'll imagine it, but it's not going to happen. Not in this world anyway. I'm VERY familiar with the Olds 455. The only way that thing will get a 16 MPG EPA rating is if you built it on top of Pikes Peak and drove it to the bottom and took the MPG reading.
I bet the next thing I hear on this forum is two men in black coats and a black car talked to the boy and bought out his windshield patent. AKA the 100MPG carburetor. :R
Look, school busses are not race cars. Most of the time they putt around on streets at 40/hour or less. There is a reason they don't have aero packages on them.
There is also a reason why trailers like the V-Cross don't really work and trailers like Air Stream do somewhat. If the aero package on the V-Cross worked so well you would see tons of them in campgrounds. I think I have only seen one or two in my life in campgrounds.

RE: 1T Pickup special rules and regulations?

LINK
If one reads down, this article from August 2009 states there is a recreational vehicle exemption.
Never heard or seen anyone getting bothered in this state for trying to tow a large trailer to a campground...
RV's IMO are most likely the least of any state's highway patrol problems.
That's very true but they are some of the best revenue enhancers. :B

RE: New invention could benefit RVers.

Sorry but IMHO this thing smells more than a tuna fish that has been in the sun for 10 days.
Like a TT the back is every bit as important as the front. Aerodynamics is a complete package. You just don't glue something on to the front of a bus and pick up 20% in mileage.
I don't know what the angle is but there is one.

RE: 06 GMC 3500 vin "D"

It had 55,000kms on and judging from photos seems to be in decent shape.
55 KMS? Hmmmmmmmmm? I have taken care of fleets for my state and for the Feds and for the state they wanted 150 thousand miles on before we could survey them out.
The Feds wanted somewhere around 100 thousand but really did not have a solid policy on miles before survey.
At 55 KMS I would want to know why they are getting rid of it?

RE: unplug my wire harness?

Owned 4 Chevy trucks over the years and they were always hot. I never unplugged any of them and never had a problem with the batteries going flat. I will continue to never unplug while I'm hitched up and suspect I will continue to never have any problems. :W

RE: Transmission oil cooler

So what kind of temps are you seeing right now?
IMHO I would leave well enough alone. I've seen people do this and break hoses or a fitting leak or something gets rubbed up and causes a leak or even cause overheating problems by stacking too many coolers in front of the radiator.
If you're not over gross on the load you should be fine.

Two WAGS from me.
#1 would be some kind of grounding issue/s.
#2 would be something wrong with the body module.

RE: Has this happened to you?

Trucker are not the only ones that pee in bottles......don't really see anything wrong with it, probably should dump them in the grass like the dogs do though.....although I do see some people let there dogs just******everywhere and that is a lot worse than a little human urine on the parking lot.
Can you spell Hep B?
I can spell it but you can't get it from urine.

RE: 3/4 ton Duramax capacity

All I can say is this. I have an long bed 06 LBZ and I put a ton of fertilizer in the bed the other day.
I also have a heavy cap on it and let me tell you it handled that ton of fertilizer great. No wallowing at all and it was on the tail of the truck. The whole ton was up against the tail gate and not in the middle of the bed or up front. :E I was shocked at how well my truck handled this amount of weight. :E
After doing this I would have no problem towing a 5er with a 2k to 2,500 lb pin weight.

RE: Add grease zerk to axle or not?

Just finished repacking all the hubs and noticed that there was a threaded hole at the end of the spindle and a small hole just inside the lip for the inner seal. I presume this is one of those easy lube fixtures (my axles just didn't come fully set up with that option). I will still pull them apart to service them, but is there any benefit to add the zerk to add grease? I removed the craptastic plastic grease caps (two cracked and one let water in) and replaced them with oversized old school metal ones so there will be plenty of room inside the cap. I am thinking against it, but would like to see if there is any benefit from those who have this feature.
The answer to your question is, it depends… if you are going to do annual pull apart service anyway, they would be of little benefit to you… if you do add the fitting you need to make sure the drum has the right double lip seal installed in it…
If you are not good at following a regular maintenance schedule or choose to use more extended maintenance schedules, as many do, they can be a great benefit to you…
Like most things there is a proper procedure to follow to reduce risk… not following the procedure will raise the risk more than doing nothing…
A little about risk, they come in many forms… when it comes to axle bearing failure it is often mentioned that the bearings were recently serviced, either by the owner or a service center…
I have known of people that have reused old seals that looked good yet, and I have known of a few times that new seals have been damaged during their installation or reassembly and times they have been adjusted incorrectly… all have their own risk…
There are some risk from not servicing and some risk of servicing… one of the biggest risk today is poor quality bearings and seals mostly imported that are being sold…
Another thing to remember, there are many axles that go un-serviced for a very long time and never have a bearing failure… many autos reach the junkyard with OE bearings still in them, never serviced and trailer axles used on multiple trailers never serviced…
One more thing, you never know what someone else did, and I would prefer using my EZ lube feature to letting someone I don’t know service my brakes and axles any time… and yes that is a real benefit to having them…
This should be a sticky. :)
You hit on every one of my points I have tried to make for years.
Most people don't understand that the parts you get from Kragen or where ever are usually NOT the same quality as OEM. And sometimes not even close. Even some newer OEM parts are junk.
I have an old trailer with made in the USA Timkin bearings in it. I check about once every 7 years or so. Only packed them once in the 27 year life of the trailer. Even then it didn't really need it.
My point is, I think a lot of times people cause more problems then they solve.

RE: WDH for 2500 Truck necessary?

I have one for my D-max and use it but it's not needed and my trailer is about 2,000 lbs heaver. The only reason I still use it is because I had one. I just snug the chains and there is 0 load and call it good.
So no, I don't think you need one.

RE: Wichita Kansas and tornados

Come on people; lets put this into perspective.
Average number of deaths in Ks/ year from tornados? 2 Two!! As in one, two!!!
Average number of deaths in the US/ year from tornados? Around 60
Average number of deaths in the US/ year from falling out of bed? Around 450!
Average number of deaths in the US/ year from vending machines? Around 13!
Average number of deaths in the US/ year from ants? Around 30!
Sooooooooooo, what does all of this mean? Well, one way to look at it is you have a 15x's greater chance of getting killed by ants than getting killed by a tornado while in Ks!
OR
You have a 7x's more of a chance of getting killed by a vending machine in the trailer park you're staying at then getting killed by a tornado!
My advice. Don't worry about getting killed by tornado's or vending machines or ants. I don't.
Now heart disease? You might want to think about that.........600,000 people die from it each and every year in the US!!!
