RE: kinda wimpy ain it?

The reason for the low towing rating is the rear gearing, 3.08:1 and 3.42:1. Both these gears are know as Highway Gear with the aim on fuel economy thus rasing the mfgrs CAFE standard. Anyone doing any serious towing must have a vehicle equipped with Towing Gears, those are gear that are 3.90:1 and lower. The higher the first number the lower the ratio. I.E. my Dakota with the highway gears 3.55:1 tows 5000 lbs, but with the towing gears of 3.92:1 it tows 7000 lbs. So the choice boils down to fuel economy or towing capacity.

RE: Spindle replacement

Depending on how HOT the bearings got I would not consider any type of reuse of the existing spindle due to heat changing the temper of the metal. Easiest/cheapest route is to get a new axle and change it yourself at home, not a hard or time consuming task. Basic tools are all that are needed.

RE: Kerosine?

Aside from the enviornmental issues, what about the fire hazard? Go to the local auto zone and buy a gal jug of Pirple Power, it works great an black streaks.

Another possibility might be a blown fuse and the battery is not getting charged and is just dead.

RE: Radio Antenna question

The issue with angling the antenna is that you then put undo pressure on the antenna base where it goes thru the roof and this pressure is more prone to cause a leak by pulling on the seal. The antenna is best if straigtht up.

RE: oven problem

If your oven is a Surburban it might be the same issue I just had. When the burner is lit and the oven is almost to temp look and see if the pilot lite is popping on and off. If so the issue is the pilot burner itself. If you've had the unit less then 2 years its under warrenty and Suburban will pay for the repairs. Open the top of your stove and get the model and ser# of the unit, and see if the manifold asm feeding the 3 top burners is square, then call suburban. I'm taking my TT to the shop this Thurs to have the repairs done.

RE: Propane Ovens

Two things when using the propane oven in the camper, #1 get a pizza stone to place under what you are cooking it helps even out the temp and hot spots in the small oven, #2 get an oven safe thermometer to check the temp, ours is 50 degrees high, as most of these ovens are off 25-50 degrees.

RE: Weight on the label vs. actual

On newer campers there maybe 2 different weight stickers, a white one near the left front side of the trl, and this one is basicly just an est. as to the actual wight minus options. Then there may be a smaller yellow sticker with weights somewhere else on the trl, mine is on the screen door. The yellow sticker will be the ACTUAL weight of the trl as it leaves the factory.

Suburban oven issues

With the oven on and burner burning good, the pilot lite makes this popping sound, its like it's getting gas then it's not, then it is then it's not. You can watch the pilot lite going on and off in rythum with the popping sound, the whole time the burning is burning a full blue flame. Then when the oven reaches temp and the burner shuts off the pilot also goes out. AT this point there IS good gas flow to the stove because I can lite ALL 3 top burners with good blue flame. Once the oven cools a bit I can relite the pilot. It's almost like once the oven starts getting hot the gas flow to the pilot is restricted so that not enough gas reaches the pilot to keep it going, like metal expansion is restricting the flow. Any ideas anyone??

RE: Has anyone pulled a 6000 lb TT with a Dakota?

popupcamper: Huntingdog might be pulling on the mountains, thinking here in NY it's flatlands, but I've towed up over Eagle Mountain in Pa. and up thru the Adirondacks and held 8% uphill grades at 60 mph by dropping 1 gear and had throttle to spare. As far as holding it going down, with the cruse set at 60 the trans in tow mode, it downshifts itself and hold the TT at about 65 with VERY little added braking if any at all. The Tow Haul mode of the newer trans go a long way the easing the downhill blues.

RE: Has anyone pulled a 6000 lb TT with a Dakota?

I have an 08 Dakota w/the 4.7 V-8. But I have the Class IV towing package with the 3.92:1 towing gears. It's rated to pull 7000lbs, and a Gross Combined allowance of 12000lbs. We tow a Rockwood 2604 that scaled out at 6540. It tows it great, but if your Dakota has the 3.55:1 highway gears it'll bearly pull 4500lbs.

RE: Why can't manufacturers think about trash?

We solved the trash can solution by keeping it in the shower stall in the bathroom which is right off the kitchen. When we shower we set the trash can beside the toilet, then back in the shower when done. Yes it's a couple of steps to the shower stall from the kitchen but so what, it works great.

RE: Is obtaining the TT tonuge weight the most important weight?

The only issue I'd have with using a CAT scale is as a truck driver, it'd sort of irk me if I had to wait 30 minutes for someone to hook/unhook, etc their TT to weight it, knowing how long it take some to do this. I weighed my TT at the local metal scrap yard where it was not busy at all and had the scale to myself to weigh each axle loaded and unloaded on the trk, and each TT axle, unhook and get TT gross etc. While the scrap metal scale might not have been as acurate as a CAT scale, Id's bet it was not off by more the 10lbs on each weigh which would put you in the ball park on all weighs, and best of all IT WAS FREE!!!!!

RE: Advice sought on Rockwood ultra lite

We have the ultra lite 2604 and love it. Other then a very minor leak (which I fixed myself) on the shower enclosure it's been great. We're on our 2nd summer of use with it. Tows great and rides smooth with the tortion axle suspension. This is my 2nd trl with this suspension and had no trouble with the last on either.

RE: Coating exposed luan plywood with ??

I'd brush on a coat of ROT DOCTOR, and then spray the bottom with a good guality automotive spray undercoating, that will provide a sealed bottom, and the spray will get into every nick and craney.

RE: Towing in hard rain. Water entry.

Take a look at the seal running along the BOTTOM edge of the window. Most Mfgrs rely on only the putty to seal the window along the bottom edge, and to cut cost only caulk the top and sides of the windows. In driving rain while towing the water will intrude thru the bottom edge of the window frame.

RE: To much hitch weight...

On the other hand having seen WAY TOO MANY TV's with the front of the veh raised way up unloading the front axle, and the rear setting way down over the axle, even with WD hitch
hyroplaining of the front axle and lose of steering is a possibility. I've seen some set-ups that I wouldn't drive around the block on dry pavement. That being said not know what type of trl (TT, 5th Whle, or utility), WD hitch involved,
etc you can only guess
