RE: Alaska advice for someone who's never been there

We went to Alaska in 2009 in our 35' Hurricane pulling our Libby (the Canada/Alaska portion of that trip starts here on our blog) and there are a few suggestions I would make: Drive to Prince Rupert, BC and catch the ferry there. It' a beautiful drive and will reduce your ferry fares by about half. Make sure you go to Sitka while on the ferry. It's a little out of the way but a must see. Make sure you spend some time on the Kenai Peninsula as well as Portage on the way down. Valdez was also very nice to visit, especially the tour into Prince William Sound. The tour out of Seward on the Kenai was also very well done. You didn't mention Denali NP, but that is on your way from Fairbanks to Anchorage and a must see. If you take the ferry both ways, you will miss the Cassiar highway and the bears at Stewart/Hyder. Two months is probably adequate for just Alaska but you will need more time to get there and back. Probably a lot I have left out but it is a big state and there is a lot to see!

RE: Lubrication for RM Falcon Two Tow Bar

We use 3/4" pipe foam insulation cut to length to protect the rods when we tow. It does wonders to keep them clean for less than a $1. Just make sure the rods are fully extended and locked before putting the foam on. Otherwise, one will collapse when you make a turn and push the foam off.

RE: 2011 Tiffin Allegro Breeze

Phil, You may have better luck on this question on the Tiffin RV Network. This doesn't sound like a leveler problem but more likely a ride height problem. There are a lot of very knowledgeable Tiffin owners there and one of them will surely be able to tell you how to set the ride height for your coach.

RE: Norcold 1201LRIM Stopped working

I have read (but haven't needed to try it myself) that you can use a magnet on the recall box to reset it.

RE: Internet Movies Q?

We have found Redbox to be our best movie source while on the road. Once an account is established you can rent from any Redbox kiosk and return the DVD to any Redbox kiosk for 1.50 a day. You can search online for your closest kiosk and reserve the movie of your choice.

RE: Why 6V battery instead of 12V?

Your coach most likely has two 12V batteries hooked up in parallel for the house 12 volt needs. Usually you can get six volt batteries with the same footprint, though a little taller, so that when you hook two of them up in series it will give you 12 volts with a higher amp/hour rating. You might want to read up on The 12V Side of Life to get a clearer understanding of this.

RE: Tips for being neat when applying Dicor

Dicor makes two caulks that are used on RVs - self-leveling and regular. Regular should be used on vertical surfaces and self-leveling on horizontal surfaces like roofs. If you use self-leveling on a vertical surface, you will have a mess as it is much more liquid and runs a little.

RE: America's Mailbox ridiculous price increase!

I don't begrudge them an increase at all!!! 30% is not reasonable. They went $30.00 across the board. I can see if they went a % across the board. The lower cost ones increased less then the higher cost ones. But 30%!!!!!!! OK, I'm done venting! For those of you that feel 30% is fair, good for you. For me the conversation is closed. I just wanted homebw and people like him to know how I feel about it. Thanks for listening, even those who 'flamed' me for an opinion. Brian 30% may be reasonable depending on how long it has been since their last increase. They may have held their rates steady for a few years and just couldn't keep eating the inflation we are starting to see everywhere. Now if you have only had them a year, that is a huge increase but it may be justified in the grand scheme of things. Many things besides gas has had a considerable increase in the last few years.

RE: Baloon Fest in Albuquerque recommendations

You can make reservations now to stay at the Balloon Fiesta's RV Park. All the electric sites are reserved so unless you want to dry camp or get on the waitlist for an electric site, you will need to find another option. When we attended in 2011, we stayed at the Stagecoach Stop RV Park a few miles North of the Balloon Fiesta. We also then drove to the Intel stop and took the shuttle from there. Just be aware that all RV Parks in the area double or triple their normal rates for the Fiesta. We will be attending again this year and have already made reservations for Lake Cochiti COE which is about another 30 minutes North but a very nice campground we also enjoyed on that same 2011 trip. The Balloon Fiesta is one of those Oh-dark-thirty events, so getting up another thirty minutes earlier will not be that much more of an inconvenience.

RE: Newbie

I think you need to go to an RV show to see what is available and how it fits your needs. I think you will have a hard time finding a new coach with all that you want. For instance, dual-pane windows are normally not found on low-end coaches...counter space and large bathrooms are not normally found on coaches 30 feet long. If you go to a show, and I realize most shows in your area have probably already been held this year, you will be able to see better how logical your wants and needs are. Also, you may find that you can come closer to getting what you want in a two to three year-old mid-level unit. A gently used Tiffin Breeze, for instance, may fit your plans very well. I understand the allergy problems but you will find that a "good dealer" will have better cleaning capabilities than an individual seller to get rid of the allergens. You may also want to reconsider towing your toad on a dolly. Four-down is much easier and since you are by yourself, you will not have to be man-handling the dolly into a storage area by yourself. Now, if you plan on staying in one place for extended periods of time, the dolly may be fine. Most late model gasser coaches can tow 5,000 pounds and diesels can usually pull 10,000 pounds.

As you can see in the picture below, there are five long RV parking slots in the middle of the left lot. http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee255/accsys/MHHOF_zps3ec29172.jpg

RE: TAX QUESTION

To quote the Michigan 1040 instructions: Who Must File a Return File a return if you owe tax, are due a refund, or your AGI exceeds your exemption allowance. You should also file a Michigan return if you file a federal return, even if you do not owe Michigan tax. This will eliminate unnecessary correspondence from Treasury. If your parents (or someone else) can claim you as a dependent on their return and your AGI is $1,500 or less if single or married filing separately or $3,000 or less if filing a joint return, you do not need to file a return unless you are claiming a refund of withholding. Important: If your income subject to tax (MI-1040, line 14) is less than your personal exemption allowance (line 15) and Michigan income tax was withheld from your earnings, you must file a return to claim a refund of the tax withheld.

RE: Digital antenna

If it's the 2004 rig in your signature, it most likely has an analog TV which will require a digital converter box. The TV dictates whether you need a converter box or not, not the antenna. A digital TV doesn't need the box, an analog one does. Perhaps the previous owner also changed the OEM TV to a newer digital one?

RE: DRUGS

This is not narcotics. Just run of the mill geezer meds. I know the on line pharmacy will mail to a different address if I ask. I'll probably go the general delivery route. One item of advice - you should call the Post Office you intend to use ahead of time and verify they receive General Delivery and also to let them know you will have a package arriving. Though not always necessary, they appreciate a heads up and you also establish that they do indeed receive general delivery - not all post offices do. We usually use a post office in a small town that only has one post office and they will almost always accept general delivery.

RE: Decoding Parks Canada Fees

Simple answer - purchase the Family Discover Pass for 136.40 CAD and that will give the whole family admission to all the National Parks and Historic Sites for a year. As said earlier, 7 days at the 19.60/day family admission price will exceed the cost of the Discovery Pass and will not get you into any of the many Historical Sites in the area you are considering. BTW, don't forget to visit Waterton Lakes NP while you are in the area. That was one of our favorites. We came back from a hike while staying in the Townsite campground to find this little fellow laying against the rear wheels. http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee255/accsys/Campsites/20092401629112.jpg Your camping sites will then cost you an additional 38.60 for FHU. You can get sites for less if you can survive without FHU but the price differential is really not all that much. Electric alone will cost you 32.30 and no services is still 27.40. It will then cost another 8.80/day for a campfire (if the site allows campfires) and 8.80 to dump if you choose a site without FHU. A complete list of fees for Banff (and most National Parks have similar fees) is located here.

RE: Pets on the Alaska Marine Highway

I would not let the pet rule stop me from making the trip up the Inside Passage. That was the highlight of our Alaskan trip. If you take the trip between Prince Rupert and Haines, you will find that they hit port about every six hours with the exception of Sitka and that one is about a 12 hour trip depending on the boat. When we did it in 2009 there were many with pets and it was no problem. There is very little human movement on the vehicle deck except while in port and the pets spend their time sleeping. Plan on getting off for a few days in each port and you and your pet will enjoy the trip.

RE: Alaska marine highway ferry fees for rvs

If you would like, you can take a look at our blog from 2009 when we made that same trip from Prince Rupert to Haines. It will show you where we stayed and what we did. The Prince Rupert entry is here and you can just keep going forward from there.
