RE: Expired Passport

I saw this one on line
http://uspassportonline.com/?gclid=CLuUjcz3p7cCFep7QgodahAAzw
Looks there are a lot of people to help you for a fee.
I would get it done before you leave. It is like winter up here still.

RE: Coach-Net, Good Sam or "Other" in Alaska?

We just signed up for AAA it covers anything I drive or tow. In theory. I was impressed with what I saw as some friends of mine had their car towed to Anchorage from Homer for repair (Range Rover). And when they moved AAA pulled out the rental truck they got stuck in their yard.
Have a safe trip.

RE: Sleeping in Daylight

Some real good advice from a lot of the northern locals.
I worked on airport radios and navigation equipment for 25 years up here. Slept in a lot of houses with no shades. I still sleep with my back towards the window and I close my eyes and it is dark.
In the summer you need to take power naps and chase weather, tides, sunrise and sunsets. A couple days of that and the power naps will work out.
Have a good trip

RE: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......

Starting to warm up here ground is thawed down to 6-8 inches. I saw two clumps of saw grass with green shoots about 2 " and a butterfly. Also heard and saw some snipe. About 46 degrees and overcast.

RE: kenai peninsula road construction 2013

Also If you have the internet access type in the state or providence and 511 most of these sites have weathercams or roadcams look at the dates on images if present and see what the road ahead is like.

kenai peninsula road construction 2013

I saw this in the local paper.
http://peninsulaclarion.com/news/2013-04-25/motorists-to-see-busy-road-construction-season-dot-says
and they are putting in natural gas into Homer. Typical summer road construction.

RE: Alaska 2013

T'was 50F here today. Snow is melting into huge slush-puddles. Clear blue skies and lots of sunshine.
The northern lights are also active now and there's still enough darkness at night to see them. Have to wait until after 10 p.m. for it to be dark enough though.
A little colder here. 50 degrees huh. Well at least we have the Homer spit. ( terrible habit)

It's about 20 degrees here today in Homer with plenty of snow left I would "meander" around a bit before coming this way.

A couple of sites with road conditions road cams and closure reports.
If you can get the internet access you can look up where the sun is shining.

Thanks, Dennis. I looked at both sites, then bookmarked them on my laptop for use on the trip. Do you know if there are similar sites for BC and Alberta?
There are sites for both just google bc 511,alberta 511 then if you can access to satellite weather pictures you can see where the weather will be good.

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

one correction
Homer High Rd Drive is really Skyline Drive rd. I would start at Diamond ridge road then turn onto Skyline drive you can also access skyline drive from east hill rd. east of Homer before Kachemak City. My must see list for around Homer is a little different as I am a "local"

RE: Length of Stay in Alaska

I believe the answer is in the word "residing". Coming up here to Alaska and working as a volunteer in a state park does not mean you are planning on moving up here. You are still visiting which is not mentioned in the Alaska statute. You would be a camp ground host, not residing at the Hidden Lake camp ground.

RE: Alcan trip completed

Initially I thought this trip was just completed now, in February 2013, BUT it is an old thread with Sourdough Biscuits having arrived in Tok in May 2012.
The no temps below freezing was what made me check :B
It's early Sue have another cup of coffee!
I saw the post also and was hoping it was a winter drive up. We were thinking the same thing.

RE: Need recommendation for GOOD CG in Homer, AK

I live here but to me the only reason to camp on the spit is for the view. Dry camp and buy seafood meals at Captain Patties. I like their food the best on the spit plus just before the restaurant closes for the season they have meals even the locals can afford.
Nothing against the heritage rv park but if you need cable tv while you are camping on the spit. all I can say is wow!

RE: Planning 2nd RV trip to Alaska via Cassiar - HELP

have you thought about taking the marine highway ferry out on the aleutians. The ferry goes out to dutch harbor and back each month. You could leave your motorhome in Homer and take the ferry ride out the chain and you will see a whole new part of alaska. You could park your vehicle up at my house and not have to worry about anything except good weather for the long boat ride.

RE: Can we fly to Fairbanks, rent an RV, & see the aurora?

you can drive out of Fairbanks 10-15-miles and look for them in the rental car. Don't even attempt to get a motor home and try camping out. It's winter up here now.
Get a hotel room and go out at night looking for them. Sleep all day and look all night.
The star gazing has been great it so clear at night.
You could also check out the chena hot springs they kind of cater to foreign folks and the northern lights.

RE: GFI Tripping Isolation

One item I found was the 3 kitchen plugs had no ground.
My guess is somebody removed the ground from those three outlets to prevent the GFI from tripping. A dangerous thing to do, but if the path to ground is removed (ground wire)the GFI will not sense an imbalance in current flow and not trip.It was very clear that the ground wires had never been connected. They were perfectly straight with no marks of any kind. IMHO someone in mfg just didn't connect them in the slide junction box.
Since my tripping takes 1-3 days I'm waiting to see if replacing the GFI cured the problem.
The ground wire is a safety ground. The gfi works on the unbalance between the hot and neutral or black wire and white wire.

RE: Alaska

Gold prospecting is one thing want to do and saw where
chicken creek has places and equipment to rent. May
be others better but just read about them. Want to see
some wldlife too. Too old for hiking much.
I think a drive up through the gold mining district is what would work for you. Canada has it all with regards to gold mining and accessible from the road. A must to see is the gold dredge and from there you can see how long you can keep your hands in the cold water panning for gold.
As for wild life drive early in the morning or late in the evening. I have seen everything in Canada as i see up here and more.
Do some google searches for gold dredges in canada and see what you can visit on the way.
