RE: How much are you willing to ?

Wow! Great info guys. I feel better now.The trailer I really like is a jayco eagle that comes in at 9105lbs dry with a dry pin weight of 2090. I really liked the quality for the price and the layout. Just thought it may be too heavy on the pin weight. I do not want to tax the truck nor myself with an overloaded beast. I may have to go the airbag route since I do not have the camper package.
Don't look at dry weights. Look at the GVWR of the trailer and see how that fits your truck.

RE: Whats Your Real Weights? Truck and Trailer. The Real Deal

Then I am within range. I just wanted a few opinions.
Yep, looks like you are good for weight police. I don't know anything about the 5.3l engine but coupled with a 3.42 rear end you might be wishing for a lower rear end ratio or a bigger engine in Colorado. Especially when the air gets thin. Only way to know is try it. Take a road trip down to I10 around Kerrville and see how it does on those grades. That will give you an idea. While there stop at Buckhorn RV Park. Very nice park right off of I10.
Go I35E to Belton then 190 West to 281 and then South to San Antonio and West on I10. It will tell you a lot about your combo.

RE: Your Rig

A favor to ask? Next time you tow with it let us know when and where?
Do I sense a diesel snob.:@
Nope, just don't want to be anywhere around where he is towing. Especially in front of him going down a hill. An F150 just flat doesn't have the brakes or suspension to tow that much.

RE: Your Rig

Yes, please show us some pics with the gear up!! Seriously, 9700 lbs, dry & 2000 lbs dry pin weight on a F150!! I'm not the weight police, but that is criminal. Not only are you gonna get pushed all over the road, your gonna bend & break that truck.
Report:
Weight by cat scale are all within tolerance
Traveled a 200 mile round trip on combination of back hilly roads and interstate. Do not get pushed all over the road. Tracks and pulls perfectly.
If this trailer breaks my truck then all older f250 should have broke by now. About the same ratings as pre 2006 f250
Got about 10 mpg on my trip.
All in all NO problem towing with f150.
A favor to ask? Next time you tow with it let us know when and where?

RE: Whats Your Real Weights? Truck and Trailer. The Real Deal

So this is what I now understand. The front axle is 3152, rear 3683. Max tawr is 7000. Max per each axle is 3950. The hitch weight is 1035, dry load is 7420, cargo max 3420. The total for truck and trailer I weighted was 14160. Hope this clarifies things.
Just FYI
Steer Axle, front wheels the ones that steer the truck
Drive axle, back wheels the ones that make it move
Trailer axles, weight on trailer axles, 1, 2, or 3.
Hitch weight: Difference between the Drive axle weight when truck is weighed unhitched and hitched up to trailer.
GCVWR: The whole banana...

RE: Whats Your Real Weights? Truck and Trailer. The Real Deal

I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado Crew cab Z71 5.3 L 3.73 towing a 2012 Forest River Hemisphere Light 24 ft dry weight 7400. Here is my issue. I know I should have bought a 3/4 ton and planning on buying one next year. I am nervous I am, over weight. I went to a cat scale and here are the basic results they gave me. Wish they were in more detail.
Truck
Steer axle: 5800
Truck/Trailer
steer axle: 6360
Drive axle: 7800
Total: 14160
My wife was not with me so I need to add her weight and my tanks were dry. Please advise.....
Dave
I would go back and try the scale again. Those numbers are nowhere close for the setup you described.
I have a F350 Diesel Crew Cab pulling a Crossroads 31' 5er.
Steer axle 5000
Drive axle 6200
Trailer axle 7800
GVW 18,200
And that's with me, DW, daughter, and 2 grandkids. Fully loaded and headed out.

RE: Long Box--Short Box?

Thanks for all the replies, I’m the OP. We are looking at buying a new truck, a one-ton this go around, and more than likely a Chevy we’ve had good luck with the one we have, but we are looking at all our options. Right now Chevy has some good rebates on 2013, but in a 300-mile radius from us they can’t find one extended cab only crew cabs. So the reason for my post was what it was like to hook up our trailer up with a crew compared to an extended cab. The other thing is we have a “Trailer Saver air hitch” which is not a slider, but is the best investment we’ve made and I want to keep it.
The Chevy has a 6-½ box; we have an extended pin on our trailer and with the edges on our trailer curved in it looks like we won’t need a slider. Some of you pointed out the potential problem with uneven ground, something to consider.
The wheelbase on a crew cab with the short box and the extended cab with a long box is about the same for the Chevy will check with Ford and Ram. The Chevy has a 36-gallon tank for both trucks, again I can’t find that info on the others in their literature so will go back and ask the dealers.
Right now with my extended cab I can see the pin to hook up with no problems so I was just curious if those that have crew cabs could see their pins.
I can't see the hitch or pin on mine and don't care. Between the crew cab and the toolbox they're not visible. If I center the neck of the trailer in the rear sliding window I'm lined up with the hitch, side to side. All I worry about is the height of the trailer. Back up till I'm close, get out and eyeball the height and back on in. That rear window is good for more than air circulation.... GRIN

Delamination

Just curious about fiberglass sidewall delamination.
If it's due only to not being properly glued at the factory and not a water leak and the associated damage it causes what does it hurt???
I'm not talking the entire side, just smal1 (2'x2' or less)areas. The sidewall can't come off, too many things holding it on(various vents, awning brackets, windows, door etc). If the caulking around all the possible water entry points is maintained I can't see any harm other than aesthetics.
To my way of thinking it's strictly an appearance item. For example a aluminum sided trailer (the usual u-shaped) is it glued to the backing? Does it float? When you knock on it all of it sounds hollow????
Thoughts???

RE: New truck break in period.

I guess I don't follow the logic. You buy a new truck. It comes with an owners manual which outlines the break-in procedure. And then ask on the web how to break it in???? Just doesn't compute....

RE: Generator ?s

http://mountainmaster.net/65genbox54amp.html
This is the one I went with. I tried the two Honda 2000. While they worked I needed them to run all night to run my c-pap machine. I had to buy an out board motor gas tank so they would not run out of gas before morning.
With this generator I can run my rig just like we had a shore line when we boon dock.

RE: Your Rig

We have moved up to the big leagues! We brought our new Cougar home last night. We upgraded from a 20 foot hybrid. Can't get picture to post but it is in my profile.
Pic in profile looks very nice! Congrats.
Don't get lost in that new trailer. A lot more room than your other one. Congratulations.

RE: **Help** 2004 CrossRoads Cruiser Pin Weight

Hi Folks. First time poster, long time lurker. Just bought a used 2004 CR Cruiser and we just LOVE it.
I have a solid 8 hours in research trying to find out what the Pin Weight is of this 5'r. I have looked everywhere with no success.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you everyone.
With the greatest respect:

RV Specific GPS

I'm looking to buy a GPS unit for my setup. I want one that will let me put in the height. Length and width don't matter. 7" screen for old eyes. It would be nice to have campground mapping also.
What do you have and how do you like it? Dislikes? Upgrades?

RE: Opinion on 5th wheel louverd tailgates

I have one and it seems to have helped my mileage?? I don't figure it because I don't want to know how much it costs to enjoy myself.
When unhooking make sure you get MOST of the weight off of the hitch. If you don't when the trailer slides off the hitch the rear of the TV will rise enough that when you pull forward the hitch will hit the shiny new tailgate.
Plus side, after a few times you will figure out if it clears the tailgate by ~X inches you are at the right height to hook up. Kind of a precheck.

RE: Generac gensets

Not sure what a "Generac gens eat" is but we have a Generac 50G genset mounted is out trailer and it's about the same as a Onan, if you are talking about the contractor model then yes it's very noisy just like all brands of the same quality.
Denny
The Generac RV generators I have heard are a lot louder than Onan, mainly because they run at 2571 RPM vs 1800 for the Onan. Other thing is the Generac is belt driven and the Onan is direct drive. One more thing to break/adjust. Just food for thought.
I had a mid-90's Class A with a Kohler 5kw generator. It was mounted under the dinette bunk and you had to really listen to know it was running when laying on the bunk. Unfortunately they quit making them. Sigh...

RE: Newbe question about electrical hook up.....

If your rv has the Marinco 50A removable socket on the trailer with the huge elephant truck cable you have 2 choices for ease of use.
The Conntek 14222 will plug into the trailer and has about a 1 ft cord to a regular 120v 15A plug that you can connect a regular extension cord (12ga recommended) to and avoid using the elephant trunk.
Or
The Conntek 14381 plugs into the trailer and then has a regular 30A RV plug on it. You can use a 30A extension cord and then a 30A RV to 115v adapter to go to the house. I have melted several of the cheapo (one piece molded) 30A RV to 120V house plug adapters, beware.
Either way will run the fridge, lights, and keep the battery charged. Just remember you are current limited. Some 115v outlets will let you run one AC some won't. If you go the 14222 route use a good quality 12ga extension cord. I have been able to run my AC with that setup but I have a dedicated 120v 20A circuit.

RE: Propane quick connect on 5th wheel

It is 4 20# tanks. I really like that because I can exchange them at lowes or walmart or wherever. Easier than finding a place to refill.
The camper is a 2013 Open Range 367BHS. Coming from an Open Range Travel Trailer. Have had a great experience with them and their company. Excited about this one.
Nice. Just remember when you do the exchange at WM or wherever you are probably not getting 20#. The ones around here have 15-16#. It's their way of raising profit without raising price... If you have an empty filled you will get the full amount.

RE: Propane quick connect on 5th wheel

Seeing all the slots (knockouts) in the floor tells me it probably has the generator prep kit and it was designed to run from propane ergo 2 more tanks. Very nice setup. What model of trailer?

Hey, I think we are all learning quite a bit from each other - I know I am. Now it comes down to me wanting to make certain that the Conntek #14381 adapter will be the correct one to use with the Marinco on my fiver before I go to Camping World and spend nearly $100 for it.
