RE: Diesel vs gas......................

Yes sport, more than double the length of mileage for oil changes in many cases.

RE: Diesel vs gas......................

Not enough of a difference in mpg between the two imop. The cost and maintenance as well as performance when not towing much more fun in a gasser. I would not argue they are better for towing no doubt about it!!!Hmmmm...I got 11-13 driving my big block empty, with a high of 15. I get 17-20 empty with my diesel, with a high of 22. The towing mpg differences are even more profound. Seems like a pretty nice difference to me. Performance-wise, the diesel suffers a quick turbo lag, then pulls as hard or harder than the big block and stays right with it in acceleration tests. With a modest chip, the diesel walks away from a big block in acceleration. My diesel costs me less in yearly maintenance than my big block did, due to longer oil change intervals.
Did I miss anything?

RE: Very first tank of fuel !

I've seen a couple pumps in my area with both ULSD and LSD still available, so it's still out there. I've seen a article posted over at the Diesel Place which said a ULSD engine could run thousands of miles on LSD without permanent damage. One tankful should make no difference.

RE: Cost of having dealer replace fuel filter

I would stay away from the dealer, they will charge you upwards of $100 just for labor. It is not a hard job to do by yourself... just go to The Diesel Place and do a search for instructions. I buy my filters online and you can get them quite a bit cheaper than buying from most local stores. Good luck.

RE: Winter Diesel

They have to add anti-gel, or mix in some #1 fuel in cold climates during the winter. Most likely, you are smelling an additive.

RE: Diesel vs gas......................

People don't regularly tow at maximum RPM's. To do so would be horribly inefficient for gas or diesel. Big block gas engines certainly develop plenty of power to get loads up the hill. I had no problem with the pulling power of my big block. I had a problem with the fuel efficiency which resulted from tapping into that power when needed. With the diesel, I'm able to tow at reasonable speeds up significant grades, without having to watch the tank gauge drop by the minute.

RE: Gross Combined Weight Limit on 07' GMC 3500 Duramax?

Actually kaydeejay, the duallies had the same 22K rating when the Duramax came out with the 2001 model year. They didn't up that until the LLY engine came out during the 2004 model year.

RE: Gross Combined Weight Limit on 07' GMC 3500 Duramax?

tarheel2,
As has already been posted, the 2500HD's have a 22,000 GCVWR. They do not put the Duramax in the standard 2500 chassis.

RE: Gross Combined Weight Limit on 07' GMC 3500 Duramax?

JMTTS, why is your 04' 23,500 and all other 04',s 22,000?The 3500's got a 23,500 rating in 2004, while the 2500HD's maintained the 22,000 rating which was in place since the models came out in 2001.

RE: Good deal or not? 2003 duramax

Thanks for all rhe input. Keep it coming. Will it still handle good while towing my tt. Its a 2009 jayflight 23fbIt would tow that sized TT without even breaking a sweat. The truck in my signature is approaching 160K miles and the 5er weighs over double what your TT weighs. It tows very strong for me.
...on edit - You may need to look at the post I made earlier to see my signature.

RE: Good deal or not? 2003 duramax

The 2003's all had the LB7 engine and it was paired with the 5 speed Allison 1000 if an automatic. I would try to talk them down on price, but it depends on what they are going for in your area.

RE: Diesel vs gas......................

Marty,
It appears you are right. KBB will let you option a 2500HD/6.0L with 3.73's. That must be since the 6L80 tranny was put in. I know that was a "no-option" option previously.

GM 2500HD's with the 6.0L gasser all have 4.10 rear gears, from 2001 to current models.

Julie, Julie, Julie...
I thought your memory was better than that. I said it was the "UP Yours Rally" and our slogan was "Hope you can Make the UP Yours."
As far as Elkhart Mark, probably not this year. However, I'll be in touch through PM.

I guess I missed the part where brakes and tires are more expensive on a diesel truck. Then again, consider the source.

RE: Duramax/allison and use of overdrive (5th)

I use tow/haul and use 5th gear too. If you are traveling less than about 62 mph, you'll have to disengage tow/haul for a second to get it to upshift to 5th. I generally tow about 55-60 mph...rpm's run around 1800 there.
