We are in Alaska now and have 2 generators. Been boondocking 99% of time and have only used the 2000 on the Denali Hwy with nobody around for miles upon miles. We have a air compressor in Fiver for flats etc. and use generators for things such as that plus to keep batteries charged when we in one place for quiet a while even tho we have plenty battery power. As remas said, they can be priceless at times and we are very respectful of the folks around us if we have to use it..

across the Campbell Hwy
The drive across the Campbell Hwy was awesome as usual. The road is in good shape with no closing. Plenty of wildlife and count on hands the number of folks we've seen. In the cute little town of Faro off the Campbell and just enjoyed free moose burgers compliments of the town.. The Yukon is so nice for sure.. :) Moving on up into Alaska..

well we know when we travel for month's your going to drop some $$$.. if you don't want to spend do like someone said, lot cheaper to stay 'home'.. but we like spending our 'children's inhertiance' as they say. :) we are in Dawson Creek now headed up and enjoying every second for our third trip.. do more boondocking to save $$.. we will be headed to the Denali and Dalton and all the free awesome scenery, wildlife your brain can handle.. Take a deep breath, regroup and enjoy rest of your time.. :)

Sue is right whern she stated it was much worse than BAD conditions in 2008...
I travelled the Campbell Hwy. for the first time too in 2008 as the west portion was generally good road surface (started at Carmacks - headed eastbound) ...once I reached the South Canol Rd. Junction (near Ross River), the road narrowed and was very rough from the get go (dry surface rutted whoop de do's) as 5mph in my 2wd rig was driving too fast as the truck shook violently...After I seen a small turnout two miles or so past the junction, I decided to turn around and head back to Carmacks as my original destination was to drive all the way across to Watson Lake.
Although the Yukon Road Conditions stated the road was 'open' with a small area showing 'rough', I was led to believe it was drivable in my rig, found out 4 days later talking to a trucker at Liard Hot Springs that it was a good thing I had turned around as he stated his collegue was driving a semi on the East Campbell a week ago at that time and it literally got stuck and buried as they had to dispatch an excavator to winch the semi across the troubled portion of the road and it was a mighty expensive billing, as the truck driver collegue said he would never drive that road again.
From the pictures Sue posted on a past thread related to the Campbell Hwy., I believe the area she and her husband travelled across showing a construction zone was the troubled portion where that semi got buried stuck.....I think after seeing Sue's pictures...."muskeg" looked like the more proper term rather than mud lol.
I am waiting for a practically drier summer season with improvement before I would consider driving the entire east portion of the Campbell Hwy in my 2wd rig (at least venture some starting from Watson Lake), as each summer in the far north since 2007 has had its share of above average precipitation.
I am almost sure that road was somewhat improved since 2008. Thank you for your reply also on the Campbell.. gravel/wilderness roads always seem to be a risk for sure, but can be so nice to be off the beaten path at times.. LOL.. Will be checking on road conditions in Watson Lake for sure..

Do check at the Tourist Info Centre in Watson Lake for an up-to-date report before heading north on the Campbell Highway. It is still early in the season and road crews have been busy so spring cleaning may not be complete yet.
The one year we were told it was BAD, we thought it can't be that bad. Well, it was much worse than BAD. Mud to the hubs while towing a fifth wheel. Jeez ... will check for sure on conditions.. have been in mud-bogging also but thank goodness for four wheel drive but sometimes that don't always work.. :S

For robatthlake: I called this morning and had a most interesting conversation with an agent at the Alaska Ferry system. We have a 35' fiver pulled by a one-ton dooly. I thought ... wouldn't it be fun to take the ferry home and see the inside passage? It's on a 21-hour trip and there aren't the crappy roads. We couldl stay here longer! I'd heard stories about how expensive the ferries are, but ... I had to find out for myself. Check this out! The ferry from Whittier to Bellingham has been sold out since FEBruary! But we could be put on a wait list. Oh, and it would only cost us $6,096 With a senior discount if there were space available! Hahahahahaha! From Haines to Bham is only $3,951 With a senior discount. There's one cabin available. Would I like him to book that? Ha! Couldn't believe my ears ... six grand if there were space available! We'll be driving back down to the lower 48. ;=) we also liked to choked on them prices! think I could afford new tires and enjoy the miles and pocketbook would sigh from relief.. LOL..

Inter-provincial Insurance card is what we got from our insurance company for this trip. Other two trips we only had our 'proof of insurance' card. Never been asked for insurance card.

Well, we are big boondockers and have done this one before and will be doing it again in July.. the Dalton Hwy and Denali Hwy.. :) We do pull a 35ft. Fiver for this also.. The scenery, wildlife, peace, quiet is awesome.

If you're driving a passenger vehicle only, those drive times are reasonable. However, if you're driving an RV or towing a trailer/fifth wheel, those driving times are optimistic.
If you're towing ...
-- Whitehorse to Dawson City, give yourself 8 hours.
-- Dawson City to Beaver Creek would be comfy at 10 hours, without a visit to Tok. On one of our trips the driving time was 12 hours through this piece.
-- Beaver Creek to Whitehorse is comfy at 8 hours. Just the section from Beaver Creek to Destruction Bay can take 4 hours if you're towing and don't wish to risk damage to your vehicle.
Please don't be one of the travellers broken down due to hitch issues or structural problems.
great advice Sue.. hope to find that 'boondocking' spot you told me about on TOW..
Also, while it is on my mind, do NOT park on the shoulder of a highway unless you very certain the ground is solid. Last year I saw a motorhome on the Alaska Highway just west of Whitehorse that had sunk sidways into the ditch and over on its side. The driver had stopped to take a picture ... and then he became the subject of many pictures!
Also saw a motorhome at a very serious angle on a shoulder on the South Klondike Highway with soft dirt up to its axle, just north of Carcross.
However, please don't park in the middle of the highway either, as one large motorhome did on the Top of the World ... nobody could get around him and he was eating lunch! Maybe trying to calm his nerves for a spell. He wasn't moving! We finally checked the shoulder for firmness and the ditch to ensure it was solid, and then put the truck in 4x4 and pulled our fifth wheel around him!
