RE: Vent Cover Replacement - Step by Step

Thanks for the info! I have damage to all three covers thanks to a hail storm. I added MaxxAir covers but still need to replace the damaged vent covers. Now I don't have an excuse to put it off.

I try not to shut down the generator under load. Typically I'll turn off the AC 15 minutes or so before we shut the genset off to give it time to cool down. Unfortunately, we forgot to do this on our first gas stop during the last trip and we shut it down under load while pulling into the pumps. This was around the time it started acting up.
The only other time I remember shutting down under load was last year when we got below 1/4-tank before finding a fuel stop. The gennie shut down before I thought it would and died under load. I don't know if that is before or after we replaced the previous board, though.
If shutting down under load is killing the board, it would be nice if they would make them a little more robust.

I'll have to call the service center on Monday to find out. It was right around a year ago.
The genset has been trouble-free since the board was replaced last year. The previous owners of the RV only ran up 15 hours on the genset in three years so it wasn't exercised much. The board went in at around 25-35 hours. We usually run the gennie on the road to power the overhead AC and have put around 100 hours on it in the last year. It didn't get exercised as much as it should have last winter, but I ran it for at least a half-hour once a month. The engine side of the genset has never been an issue...always runs like a champ.

Yeah, I noticed that after my last post. It appears my genset does not have an oil pressure switch. For my fault code, the correct manual says to check the brushes and slip rings or replace the control board. Onan put a new board in it last year (the new 327-1413 part) around this time for the same symptoms.
Now I need to decide if I'm going to drop the unit to inspect the brushes and slip rings, or if I should just bite the bullet and order another board. If it is the board, I would like to know what is causing them to go bad. The $300+ adds up fast.

OK, I backpinned pin 12 on the control PCB and I get about 5k-ohm between the pin and ground. This doesn't change with the genset running. From looking at the schematic, it should be open with no oil pressure (near infinity), and should go to near zero ohms with the engine running.
The manual I'm using is for the KY series gensets, but it calls them "MicroLite". My genset is a "MicroQuiet". Are there two different KY-series gensets? Maybe I'm looking at the wrong pin.

The unit will start fine, but die when the start button is released. If I hold the start button down, it will die after approx. 10 seconds. I get a fault code of 32 which indicates low cranking speed. This would make more sense if it didn't start but it runs like a champ for 10 seconds. I get about 128V at the outlet when it is running so I suspect it is a voltage regulation issue.
I'll plan on pulling the gennie this weekend so I can give it a good look-see.

Access to Generator Brushes

My Onan Microquiet 4000W gennie died last week on a trip (KY Series K generator). I received a suggestion to check the brushes and slip rings based on the fault code, but do I have to drop the generator to do this? I've poked around a little and there isn't much room for access with it installed. Are there access panels or something, or should I just plan on pulling the unit?

More generator troubles

I’m having trouble with my Onan generator (again). It is a 2005 Microquiet 4KY, Series K, 4 kW gas generator. It fires right up when I press the start button but dies as soon as I release it. If I hold the button down, it will run like a top for ten seconds and then it shuts itself down. It works the same way from the internal start button and from the button on the genny.
The generator is getting fuel since it starts fine and runs for ten seconds. The RV has a full tank. The oil level is also fine. The battery connections are solid and it cranks strong. During the ten seconds that it will run, I get AC at the receptacle…around 126-128V which sounds high to me. Finally, once it shuts down after ten seconds I get three flashes on the start button which indicates service is required. I hit STOP to get the second level fault code which is 32, meaning low cranking speed. The troubleshooting steps for this code in the manual don’t make sense as it is cranking fast enough to start just fine.
I’m sitting in Vernal, Utah right now and only have access to basic hand tools. Does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions that don’t involve dropping the generator?
For additional background, the generator had similar symptoms last summer and the Onan service center replaced the control board for around $360. A couple of months later I had the same symptoms again. I couldn’t start it before heading out on a long trip, and the Onan folks squeezed me in before leaving town. It started right up at the shop so I suspected the oil level had been a little low (lots of slope in my driveway). It worked fine until after our first gas stop on the current trip. It wouldn’t start after leaving the pumps. We stopped an hour later and I pulled the cover to start it from outside. It fired right up. I shut it down for the next gas stop and it hasn’t run since.
Any help would be appreciated, as we have a long, hot drive back to Kansas on Friday and I would REALLY like to run the overhead air. I’d take it to an Onan shop but we just don’t have time to drop off the RV somewhere.

Have you checked the oil level? Our 4kW Onan has a low oil cutoff switch. I couldn't get it to start in the driveway one day, but it fired right up at the Onan service center. It seems the oil level was just high enough to run when perfectly level but it would die on the slightest incline.
It's cheap to check.
