RE: Pets in the coach

We have two Samoyeds...we pullthe shades...put on soft music...turn the lights off...and leave them to snooze in their crates. They actually look forward to it because they know whenever they go into their crates and we close the door...they get a treat. We also have a monitoring system in the camper that will call us if the temperature gets above our alarm set point...or if the power goes out. It's simply a pay as you go cell phone, PhoneLynx Bluetooth bridge, and an Intermediate Freeze Alarm. We can also call into the camper from wherever we are and get a report on the current temperature etc...

RE: Pet Wellness - Temperature/ Power Outage Alarm

Sounds good... The Cobra PhoneLynx accepts 12v dc...so you don't need a voltage adapter...just a cigarette lighter plug with the correct sized tip. The backup port for the Freeze Alarm takes a 9v battery...so you could use a multi adapter for that...but it's just as easy to stick a 9v battery in the slot to make it happy. IMPORTANT...you want to make sure to use the supplied 120vac power supply that comes with the Freeze Alarm... The reason being is...that's how you monitor the shore power to your RV. If the shore power trips...the freeze alarm will detect the loss of power...and place an alarm call. (Using the 9v backup battery) Chances are...this will give you the first warning....before the temperature has a chance to get too hot. The temp alarm is still important in case the a/c unit fails...even though shore power is normal. Hope that made sense. I'm assuming that your 12v supply is from the coach/house battery...and will continue to supply 12v even in the event of shore power failure... Glad it's working out!!! We're at Ft. Wilderness with our two Samoyeds now. Freeze alarm is monitoring our 5th wheel while we enjoy the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival. Getting up in the eighties already...and our site doesn't have full shade...so it is very important that we know our pups are safely resting in the air conditioning. Safe travels, Charlie

RE: Highlands Hammock - A Florida State Park

Have they reopened the restaurant by chance? It was opened last month, when we were there.

RE: super glide hitch

Yes...pull rite makes the super 5th (non sliding hitch) that accepts the same rail system. They are interchangeable...so you can get a mounting bracket set that will fit both your long bed truck and Superglide hitch...

RE: Tire changing ramp

If you have a blowout on the highway...especially the right side...you'll be jacking your camper up on a soft shoulder perhaps. A bottle jack will require some type of shoring to be placed under it for support. If an 18 wheeler passes...your camper can get blown off the jack very easily. I think it's dangerous...and wouldn't even attempt it. If you go this route...I suggest you slowly drag your limping camper off the highway somewhere safe. I have the plus version of the ramp. I feel safe using it even on the shoulder of the highway. I wouldn't use anything else.

RE: Highlands Hammock - A Florida State Park

Sebring is great! I love riding the Hammock loop every morning on my bike...and there is a nice bike shop close to the campground...and since my wife, and I are vegetarian...we like the Taste of India restaurant. We've got a reservation for a couple of nights coming up soon. Can't wait.

RE: kayaking/canoeing

If you enjoy flat water kayaking...might look at FOLBOT. We have two folders that go into the basement of our fiver...but can just as easily be thrown into the back of my wife's RAV4.

RE: Pullrite Superglide

I took some 2x4 and 1x4 scraps...nailed them together so the lowest piece fits between the slide rails...the next one rests across the slide rails...and the final piece rest under the back of the hitch head plate... This keeps mine level...so that my roll n lock cover clears the hitch...and keeps it from swinging around back there. I can add a bungee...if I find later that it needs more security...

RE: Potential 5th wheel newbie questions

Not familiar with the unit... Tough to rack kayaks with 5'r... Travel trailers have no problem with over cab racks on the tow vehicle. My wife and I carry ours in the basement of the 5th wheel. I have the 18 ft Cooper and she has the 16 ft Kiawah. They are folders made by FOLBOT. They are very nice for RV travel. We may eventually get some nice hardshells for day trips...but for now the folders suit our needs. Good luck in your hunt!

RE: Has anyone built their own shower base (i.e. pan)??

Kerdi board shower pan system I've done mud pans...but I wouldn't think them a good idea for an RV... Something like the Kerdi method would be better choice in my opinion. See if you can find someone with firsthand experience with the system and see what they think about using in an RV... I have not personally worked with the system...so even though I think it's a good system....I'd still pick the brain of someone with experience using it befor making a final decision

RE: Vegan Recipes for camping

I'm with you! My wife and I just tell people we're on a "plant based diet"... Unfortunately, there are Vegans that are animal-rights extremists...and offend people who choose to eat/wear animal products period. I think it's admirable in a way...but having eaten meat, worn leather, etc...for over 52 years...I can never see myself preaching to anyone. Heck, there have been women on my Dad's side of the family live to 100... farming cattle, chickens, eating fresh churned butter... Some people can obviously handle it. Others...like myself...slowly get poisoned by it. I think that if putting a surgeons general warning on cigarettes hasn't shut down the tobbaco industry...then the "vegan movement" cannot expect to end meat production. Bacon doesn't have a health warning label...and most dairy products actually say..."does a body good!" I think it's a great way for some people to improve their health and quality of life. That's all... I hope I didn't offend anyone :) All the best,

RE: Vegan Recipes for camping

Just had a progresso 99% fat free lentil soup...it was actually very good. ( 5th wheel has a microwave..) I consider myself lucky. I made a decision back in June to change my eating habits in order to shed a few pounds...and get my triglycerides and cholesterol under control. I didn't want to go on statins... The more I read about the Vegan and 80-10-10 lifestyle...the more I thought this makes sense for my situation. I'm very happy with my results so far. I'm currently down to 190lbs...down from 246lbs. My blood lipids are heading back to normal levels. If you recently changed...you may find that your B12 levels stay normal for almost 3 years...good to get them checked during physicals....and supplement as necessary. I pick up some seaweed salad from a local sushi place from time to time...I think it's a vegan source of B12.

RE: Vegan Recipes for camping

We do green smoothies for b'fast...banana-pineapple smoothie for lunch...big salad for dinner. Occasionally, we like to grill some vegan bratwurst and serve them with grilled peppers and onions, and Amy's Dijon mustard. Having a few munches like vegan pumpkin bread, pistachios, etc...are nice to have. If you have any West Indian restaurants near you...you might take-out some doubles or vegi-roti. They are great to reheat and eat later. You can find lots of channels on You Tube with vegan food prep tips... Here's to your health...

RE: Whatcha Having For Christmas Dinner?

Good for you, I lost 60+ Lbs last year, no more Gout, no more high cholesterol, no more high blood sugar and doc took me off blood pressure medication...feels good doesn't it? I didn't do the vegetarian thing but we all need to find what works for us because the fad diets don't do it, I'm 62 and I feel better now than I have in 20 years :B That is awesome. Cheers! To your health!!!

RE: Whatcha Having For Christmas Dinner?

Probably a Gardein "Holiday Roast"...we've been vegetarian since June...and feel great! I will somewhat miss not smoking a garlic infused prime rib... But not enough to risk going back to my old habits. Here are the things I have given up since I gave up meat ... 50 lbs of excess weight Palantar faciitis Shortness of breath Occasional chest pains High cholesterol High triglycerides Works for me :)

RE: Is January too early to plan a trip to Walt Disney World?

It appears they are very booked for January... You should check back and make a reservation, when you can. I think you can cancel without penalty more than five days in advance...and if you cancel within five days you forfeit your deposit on the first night... Check for the current policy before you decide... Due to the snowbird migration...many campgrounds are nearly impossible to get without reservations... Good luck.

RE: PullRite SuperGlide ISR hitches - question -

I have the 2700 15k model in my Dodge...I can close my roll n lock... With the head level ( I made a little wooden chock to hold it level when not in use)... I measure around 17 1/2 high...hitch AND rails...measured from the crest of the box ridges... The latch handle can pivot a bit...it measures 17 1/4 - 17 7/8" depending on how it sits...again....from the crest of a box ridge, with the hitch mounted...

RE: 5er and TT tire blow outs....

On our last trip...We blew the right rear tire...stopped and put the spare on...50 miles later threw the tread off the left front. Tires where 2 1/2 years old with about 13,000 miles. Anyone know what I have to do to get 16" LT wheel sets on? Do they have to rehang axles for spacing? are there any suitable low profile 16" tires that can be used with the axle spacing as is??? It will get expensive if I have to replace these crappy 15" ST tires every 10,000 miles... Not very happy about that...

RE: Tornadoes and TCs

Wow...glad everyone was okay. I equate a camper to being NOT unlike a boat or an airplane. Severe weather can spell disaster. Just as the Captain of an airplane or boat will do before departing...check the weather. Update the weather as necessary. When bad weather heads your way...avoid it --- even if it means breaking camp and heading somewhere safe. Campers...be good "Captains" of your ship...check the weather, stay informed, and make sound decisions to avoid severe weather... I use a weather alert radio...and a smartphone app to watch radar images as needed. Hope you all do too. I have broken camp and left early a time or two...and have made last minute decisions to change destinations in order to avoid tropical storms... In the future I hope you don't become a victim of severe weather...a tornado can possibly mean game over. Not worth being passive and wait see --- better to be proactive and blast off for calmer surrounds. All the best, Charlie ( Airline Captain...and severe weather avoidance specialist)
