RE: US 550 Albuquerque to Durango

US 550 to Durango is an good easy route.
It you want something a little less easy but more scenic. Then you could take US 285 at Clines Corner. Then take this to Santa FE and then US 84 to Chama and then to Pagosa Springs, CO. Then US 160 to Durango. There are a few curves and hills that will slow you a little. But, no major passes.

RE: Warranty question

Well, they couldn't find the problem. So, I got charged an hour of labor ($130).
The problem is, they say that even if I bring the RV in with the problem occurring and they fix the problem, they don't reimburse the previous time they spent. Their suggestion is not to have something looked at while you happen to be there for service.
So, we will see next time and then I will contact Freightliner, Fleetwood and anybody else.

Warranty question

I have had my motorhome (2012 Fleetwood Discovery 40g) for less than 1 year, so it is still under all of its warranties.
I had to take it to the Freightliner service center to have a recall done on it. So while it was there I had a full service done and also an alignment done. Also, I had them look at a problem where my headlights come on by themselves. I was assuming that this would be a Freightliner thing (I know I shouldn't assume).
I am picking up the motorhome this afternoon, so this is hypothetical for now, but the amount they said I owe seems like they are charging me a couple of hours for the headlight problem.
I understand that whatever I signed allows them to charge me if they found the problem was on the Fleetwood side of things. I don't have a problem paying it. And I probably should have asked Fleetwood first what I should do.
So, it that what we are supposed to do. Call the dealer or Fleetwood first and see where they want me to take the motorhome to have something fixed.

RE: Highway Question?

Search for "Wolf Creek Pass". That will give you a lot of peoples experiences with it. For me, it is fairly easy since it is not too steep and the curves going downhill are not too sharp. But, I am used to driving in the mountains. And it might depend on how comfortable you are using the lower gears and exhaust brake (if you have one) and how much power you have.
And since there are climbing lanes, you don't have to worry about going to slow.

RE: Taos to Santa Rosa NM

NM68 to Santa Fe is definitely the fastest and easiest, except for going through Espanola and Santa Fe. Stay in the center lane until after Cerrillos Rd. Then you can move over to the right hand lane.
In Santa Rosa you have to take the I40BL and then through town until NM91.
US64 is a very nice scenic drive, especially the Cimarron Canyon State Park. But it's slow going through the mountains from Taos to Angel Fire.
The third choice is to take NM518 to NM442 to Las Vegas. But, I haven't been all the way through for a long time so I can't comment on that drive.

RE: 2012 Jeep Wrangler towing question

I also can't get our Jeep out of neutral without starting the engine. I have been doing it with the engine running, but I think I will try stopping the engine like you did.
I would guess the problem is that we aren't moving at 2-3mph like the owners manual says for shifting from 4L to 4h.

RE: Fleetwood Discovery motorhome a good buy?

We bought a 2012 Discovery 40G in July. It has been great so far. A couple of little things fixed so far. A bad windshield wiper, broken trim on the fridge, and a sun screen that didn't work. We have the u-shaped dinette with the telescoping table and it won't stay up. The will replace the next time we take it in.
The washer and dryer and residential refrigerator are great.
We just got a recall notice for the chassis. They need to check a couple of connections. And we have a couple of other electrical things we need to have Freightliner look at. Sometimes we get a couple of beeps during a left hand turn. And the headlights will come on by them self.
I contacted Freightliner to ask for plumbing and electrical drawings and they sent them right away.

RE: Taos to Durango on US 64

US64 between Tres Piedras and Tierra Amarilla does get over 10,000 feet elevation. There is a very nice overlook before you start going down into the valley. We haven't done this in the motorhome just because it is out of the way for us. If you want to avoid the pass, you can go down NM68 to US84 in Espanola.
We usually take US84 to Pagosa Springs then US160 to get to Durango. We did come back once on US550 and NM96. Both are fairly easy drives in the motorhome, normal NM, CO roads, some sections without paved shoulders. Taking US550 and NM96 is quite a bit longer drive.

RE: DOUBLE TOWING WITH SINGLE AXLE TT

When I looked through the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Code, I couldn't find any requirement for the first trailer to be a fifth wheel. There is a 65 ft length limit, which I guess you shouldn't come anywhere near. And there is a requirement for the middle unit to have brakes.
You can find the Motor Vehicle Code on line.

RE: traveilling from new mexico to arizona

It would depend a lot on where in New Mexico you are and where you are going to in Arizona.
I10 is the easiest, then I40, then probably US60.

RE: New Mexico 117 south to NM US 60 to Mesa, AZ

We did most of this route a couple of years ago, except we went through Payson on Az 87 and 260. We had a 35ft motorhome w/toad at the time, but I would do it in our current 40ft motorhome.
US 60 is fine. NM 117 is a typical NM state road, skinnier lanes and no shoulders, probably a little better than some. I don't recall any problems, sharp curves, or drop offs. It is a nice drive going past El Malpais National Monument. You go past lava flows and there is an arch to see.
Not much services, if any, between Grants, NM and Springerville, AZ. I don't think Quemado, NM has much.
Usually we take I40 to Holbrook, and then to Payson and Phoenix.

RE: US285 Good Road?

US285 is a good 4 lane divided highway from Carlsbad to I40. It is a little slow going through Roswell.

RE: Pulling Jeep Unlimited

We have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with an automatic. It is towable 4 wheels down. All current Jeeps Wranglers are since they all have the manual 4wd transfer case. This goes back a few years, but I am not sure how long.
The current ones also do not need the key in since the steering wheel does not lock. I think this goes back to 2010 or earlier. The manuals have not been updated. But the user guide has been updated.
Also, the manuals and user guide can be found online on the Jeep web site somewhere.

RE: Santa Fe, NM to Montrose, CO

We have taken US 285 north from Santa Fe. And then CO 114 in Saguache, CO to US 50. This is a smaller road with about a 10,100ft pass. Lower than Monarch, but I haven't done Monarch pass so I don't know if this is faster or easier than taking US 285/CO 17 to US 50. We did this when we had a 35ft motorhome. It was a very nice drive. And probably easier than CO 149.
We have also done US 550, but that was with a Dodge Durango towing a 26ft trailer.
We haven't done CO 145 in an RV, but we were on it with our Jeep a couple of weekends ago and they were repaving the road near Ophir and it was down to one lane.

You don't have to worry about the steering wheel being locked since the Jeep does not have a locking steering wheel.
And you didn't mention what lighting you have installed.

RE: RoadMaster Tow Bracket 4 New jeep, BAD

I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport and installed the Roadmaster bracket. The only difference, I got the 1432-3, but it looks like the part that mounts on the Jeep are the same.
It fits fine and was an easy install. Certainly easier than other cars that I have done. I think it was the passenger side that I added a washer since there is a little extra space between the bracket and frame rails. I didn't have to drill any extra holes.
The bumper does take a little work to get it back on.
I did have to send the passenger side bracket back because it was missing the tab for the safety cable. Of course I didn't notice it until after I installed it. But, Roadmaster sent a new one.

RE: SATELLITE RADIO ANTENNA

I installed a Sirius/XM marine antenna on the roof. They come on pedestals but some can be flush mounted. Drill hole through the root and run the cable down to the radio.
When using the original antenna inside, the aluminum framing would at times block the signal.

RE: Can I tow a Dodge Durango 4 down?

We had a 2005 Dodge Durango. It had the hemi engine and the transmission which could be switched from AWD to 4WD and had a neutral button.
I think that having the neutral button defines if it can be towed 4 wheels down. Some are just AWD and I think that maybe they can't be towed 4 wheels down.
The owners manual describes the procedure for towing 4 wheel down.
Also, our Durango weighed a little 5200 lbs, so that might be a consideration also.

RE: Best Route Santa Fe, NM to Durango, CO

Fastest way there. We do that drive a couple of times a year. Pretty easy compared to other drives. The longest grade would be between Lake Abiquiu and Tierra Amarilla. Not very bad and has a passing lane most of the way. A few sharp curves before Pagosa Springs. Then easy to Durango.
Roads are fine. A couple of older section before Tierra Amarilla.
