RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Can't turn it off since it is hard-wired to a solenoid at the propane tank. The coach batteries were not low. My '99 Pace Arrow had one of those, had to get the solenoid replaced after about 6 years, it got stuck in the closed position. Our '08 Southwind does not have the solenoid. I'd be tempted to have them remove the solenoid and just have the propane detector that was not attached to the tank. If you are worried about leaving the dogs, just shut off the propane at the tank when you leave.

RE: Question for Dr. Doug

Can't tell from picture exactly where the lumps are. Probably best to have your vet check them out. The most common lumps are lipomas. Doug

RE: What do you think about having to have a Prescription

This topic was touched on in another thread. Currently the FDA does not require a prescription for special diets, but some states might and many veterinarians do require them. There are efforts to make the prescriptions mandatory. FDA poised to tighten oversight of therapeutic pet foods This article give a pretty factual basis for the arguments. Two factors, one is safety using the diet in the general population without the oversight of a veterinarian and two, claims that mfg make concerning the efficacy of the diet that may false. Doug, DVM

RE: A good day!

Interesting... I buy non prescription items from Entirely Pets.com all the time but I never attempted to buy something like Renal formula food from them since it is readily available within a few miles and I have a prescription. The price on the website is a little less than what I pay but sometimes shipping charges eat up any savings. I might combine some of the food with a few other items next time I need something and get free shipping. With that said, I would strongly suggest that anyone wanting to change to this diet to consult with their vet and have their cat examined BEFORE making the change even if you don't need a prescription on some websites. Interesting thing going on now, prescription diet has always been a marketing designation rather than a legal one. Some states may vary and many individual businesses require a prescription. There has been a move to make prescription diets prescription under the regulation of the FDA as other prescription items. This may come to pass in the future. Most prescription diets are not "ideal" diets for general use, but probably not a serious issue in most situations. It's just felt by many that the use should be under the direction of a veterinarian. Doug, DVM

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Adequan injections are given "in body" - either IM or SubQ. I've never done an injection into the joint with Adequan, not sure it's really necessary. As far as reactions, very low risk and the most common is pain from injection (just like any shot). Doug, DVM

RE: Does stress itch??

I wouldn't restrict water. How is (was) the pred being dosed? If oral medication has been continuing, it's time to reduce the dosage, call your vet. If it was given by a single injection, all you can do is ride it our until the signs disappear. Signs this severe are pretty uncommon, but do occur.

RE: A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Dr. York said Mama was a perfect candidate for the Stem- Cell procedure. Based on past treatments of other dogs like Mama she will be as good as new after surgery and when therapy is complete. We can expect to see good results about four or five days after treatment. Look out Branson here we come! Wow!! That's an even better prognosis than I expected.

RE: Excessive Vet costs?

This is getting a little out of hand. Comparing charges in more than general terms is meaningless, like apples to oranges. The costs of doing business is so different from one state/local to another that specific dollar amounts don't easily compare. Also, to compare anesthesia prices of a spay/neuter to that of a general surgery is doing a disservice to your vet. What we charge for those procedures in no way even covers our costs. You try to figure the actual cost for anesthesia (personnel time, use of anesthesia equipment, drugs). The actual costs (plus a reasonable return on investment) is actually closer to the $400 than the $40. Doug, DVM

RE: Sprained Foot

Pain medications and rest (ice if you really know which joint). If not better within a day or two, it would be best to check with your vet. Doug, DVM

RE: Excessive Vet costs?

Our friend had a similar situation . She contacted corporate and got the bill adjusted. Wrote a letter questioning all the items fair and unfair, while still complimenting the vet who did the work. Good luck That's what I'd do. The dental stuff was way beyond what was quoted and if they couldn't get in touch with you they shouldn't have done it. They should only have done something not authorized that was a life-threatening issue.

RE: Does stress itch??

I frequently see GI signs along with acute anaphylactic reactions. We've got many bees and other insects (finally warm enough) along with everything blooming and growing. I suspect this had nothing to do with behavior (especially since the pred worked), pure physiological reaction and the intense itching increased the stress level.

RE: Excessive Vet costs?

Banfield is a corporation, the individual vets most likely are employees and have little input as to prices, what is done, how it is done and charged and ultimate cost to you. Just a couple of comments (I can't resist). There is no such thing as a little anesthesia. Maybe short in time, but invariably things that go wrong do so at the start. Many of the costs are the same whether it's 5 minutes or 60 minutes (preop blood work, catheter, induction drugs, inbutation,). About the only variables with time are related to personnel costs and inhalation anesthetic supplies. That being said, last Friday I had a laceration in a geriatric patient with a severe heart condition that we thought couldn't withstand a general anesthetic. I did a local (very nice Chi believe it or not :B), cleaned the wound and placed about 15 staples. With pain meds and antibiotics she went home MUCH less that $1000. Always request an estimate in writing before agreeing to any surgical or involved lab or medical procedure. If your vet doesn't provide it or cops an attitude, walk. Doug, DVM

RE: Firestone-ophobia???

:B Reminds me of our Amanda and her reaction to rumble strips. She'd sit up and look at the floor then at me (driving) as if to say MAKE IT STOP. Even though she's been gone for 7 years, I still apologize if we hit a rumble strip heading to a toll gate or veer slightly to the right (hate Missouri as the put the rumble strip in the white line).
