Onan LP Gen Install

Hi,
I've noticed that the price of a Onan RV QG 2500 LP option on most TC's is pretty expensive. On the Northern Lite it's almost $4,500.
I see these generators online for as little as $2,500. If your TC is "generator ready" how difficult can this install be?
Anyone done this?
Thanks!!

RE: Using your truck camper jacks

Here is my take, you like background noise? We'll your gonna get plenty of it in either a Class A or C as all the stuff you brought with you is only 3-18' from your head. My parents owned both a Class A and C, my buddy owned a Class C, all of which I spent a considerable amount of time in, and all I remember is the rattle of everything that COULD possibly rattle...pots/pans, shades, silverware, keys and things you thought couldn't make noise, will.
My wife and I rented a Class C this past winter to make sure we wanted to buy a TC, well after 2 weeks having to shout to each other while driving or having to blast the stereo, the choice was easy....like pulling trailer, owning a TC and driving a truck, isolates you from all the chaos that you are hauling with you. It is also a lot safer, no flying projectiles (pets included) to spear you in the back of the head when you have to slam on the brakes!

RE: Pop-Up Campers

I have had 2 Outfitters, an 04 Apex8 and an 07 Apex9.5. Both were HEAVILY optioned/mod'ed and a few of the options/mods that Outfitter offers now were either my idea or developed to fit my requests during the build process.
Do a search for my posts on the subject and I would be happy to answer any questions.
Pretty much all of the newer, bathroom equip'ed, well optioned pop-ups are going to need a HD truck to carry them. It's just simple physics that you can't get a well appointed camper without adding weight and you can't stuff several thousand pounds of stuff into a truck built to carry 500lbs.
Outfitter does make several smaller (no bathroom/basement) models for lighter duty trucks though.
Thanks so much for the info, I spec's out an Outfitter Juno 10 the other night, yes, it would weight north of #3,200, I will be getting a 1 ton Crew LB SRW to carry it. I will send you a PM with some specific Outfitter questions.
Thanks!

Pop-Up Campers

Hi,
I am looking at getting back into a pop-up camper...I previously owned a Northstar unit back in the 1980's.
I sold the previous soft-side for a number of reasons:
no shower, limited fresh water, the zippered windows rattled in the wind, the softside's battered about in the wind, not much storage, no air cond.,small fridge, soft-side wear points. I swore I would never own another, but they do fill a need that I still have. The ability to travel off road and camp in remote locations without a white knuckle experience and the need for a HD pick up.
I can see that it looks like these units have come a long way since the 1980's. After some research it looks like the Juno 10 made by Outfitter comes the closest in hopefully solving those issues and traveling in the most comfort (DW) sans a hard side.
I would appreciate anyone's real life reviews on the love/love or love/hate relationship they are experiencing with the new generation pop-up, specifically with the Outfitters if at all possible.
Sorry for being so long winded...but they do cost $$$
Thanks so much!

4500/5500 MPG/Ride Quality

Can anyone post what MPG's they are getting with their camper on a chassis cab?
How about the ride quality when it is loaded?
Please include gearing if you can.
Seriously considering one, but don't want DW complaining too much about the ride....
Thanks!!

RE: 3.42 or 4.10?

With the brand new for 2013 DEF emissions setup on the Ram diesels I would not want to be buying an early production unit but would wait until the truck has been out for 5-6 months and the service bulletins are in the hands of the service department.
Being the first to buy any first year diesel pickup truck has not been without problems regardless of the manufacturer.
I would normally agree with you, but they have been using the DEF in the Chassis Cab models for a couple of years now, same engine.

RE: 3.42 or 4.10?

Can you even get a 2013 1 ton Dodge? I heard that they were having some production problems and it would be at least May until they were available.
The RAM 1500's are built below....not good news.
The RAM 3500's are built in Satillo, Mexico...thank god! (you will agree after reading the two articles below).

Even worse, employee sabotage....

I just got a call from my fleet dealer, they cannot order the 6.7 Cummins High Output with the Aisin right now, trying to contact them to find out why.

RE: 3.42 or 4.10?

You don't need 4.10 or any other low ratio like that with the Aisin 6-speed automatic.
The Aisin handles the gearing. It has a nice low 1st gear to get the load moving even with a 3.42 rear axle ratio.
It has 3 intermediate gears for getting up to highway speed.
5th gear is for cruising with a load.
6th gear is for cruising empty.
Plus you've got *YES* power and torque from the Cummins engine.
You are correct, I read that exact same info on a diesel website....going with the 3.42's, get as much MPG's as possible!

RE: 3.42 or 4.10?

The OP said he wanted a DRW. When I uses Dodge's build site and I include the Aisin Tranny, I have to get 4:10 gears in DRW.
Now if I get the 68RFE tranny and DRW I have to get the 3:42 axle ratio.
The Aisin tranny allows for 64% more input torque(up to 960lbs)than the 68RFE tranny.
Looks like Dodge thinks that the 68RFE tranny is maxed out with the non HO engine,so you have to get the Aisin tranny with the HO engine.
The Dodge site IS totally messed up, I call them to complain about it, they acknowledged it, and said they were working on it.
You can get either the 3.42 or 4.10 with the Aisin transmission with a DRW according to the build site, if you select the 3.73 you are prompted to lose the diesel/Aisin package.
I am very disappointed in the least in the incompleteness of the RAM 2013 website AND still no 2013 brochures....

It is messed up for sure, how do you know that?

RE: Engine Block Heater/Grill Cover Needed?

OF COURSE I would not need such a thing if i never left Mission Viejo, but I do visit my parents during the winter in Cedar City, UT where it gets below freezing quite a bit.

Engine Block Heater/Grill Cover Needed?

At what realistic temps would I need the "cold weather group" on my new Ram? That would include an engine block heater and a grill cover....
The only grill covers I have seen have been the kind that have ugly snaps on the grill, I certainly wouldn't want that. How do the new grill covers attach?

...2013 3500 Ram with the 6.7 and Aisin 6 speed...
Are they now using the Aisin tranny in the 3500? When I was shopping, it only came in the cab & chassis. I still have the Chrysler tranny.
The Aisin is now an option on the 2013.....

RE: 3.42 or 4.10?

Isn't the 3:73 available? My buddy has an 04 with a lance plus a trailer and gets about 13 to 14. Empty he is about 20. I have the 4:10, but it is overkill most of the time and if I had a choice it would be the 3:73.
The 3.73 is not available with the 2013 diesel, gasser only....

3.42 or 4.10?

I am going to place my order for a 2013 Ram 3500 DRW Crew Cab Diesel tomorrow.......3.42 or 4.10 rear end? Putting a 1140 Arctic Fox on the back, towing a 5,000 lb boat or Toyota Tacoma from time to time.
I really appreciate this board and all its valuable expertise!!
Thanks!

Flat Bed/Ride Quality on a 4500/5500

I have a couple of questions...
a) Anyone find an aluminum flat bed (not utility bed) that sits below the wheel wells? I'm trying to keep my center of gravity as low as possible.
b) Is there anybody that can tell us how the ride is in either a 4500 or 5500 with a heavy truck camper on it, at least 4,000lbs....
I know both those trucks will have your kidneys in your throat with no payload on them, since most of these heavy campers would be better off with that type of truck under them, like to know what that ride might be like.
I see with the Dodges, they have a max 87 mph speed on them.

What kind of MPG's can I expect with a late model diesel 4WD Crew Cab Dually (any of the big three) with either an 1140 or 1150 on it?
