RE: what is your choice for tires

are LT tires recommended for trailer use.
Yes LT is always good on a trailer. Many large & heavy trailers come OEM with LT tires. These are the strongest tires made for all positions and use. The load range is already derated ~10% for heavy duty use. Only thing stronger is a full on commercial tire.
JMHO
We agree...I wasn't asking if they were ok with trailers I was saying these kumho are recommended for trailer use by the manufacturer.

RE: what is your choice for tires

Just make sure they are ST tires.
I would recommend against st if possible. These kumho are a good alternative.

RE: what is your choice for tires

My understanding is the Kumho are not st tires but are lt tires recommended for trailer use. They are not speed limited 65 mph and a good alternative to st may pops.
From the KUHMO USA website:
The Radial 857 is available in European-metric commercial sizes. The 857's primary application is to be mounted on a trailer. With its solid commercial construction, the 857 provides the durability and reliability you need from a trailer tire.
SPECIAL FEATURES
> For commercial light truck, transporter, van and trailer.
> Deep zigzag grooves for increased mileage.
> Straight center groove and sipes on four ribs to improve ride and noise.
Larry
Not sure of your point but these are not st tires so they have way more dot testing and will have a service life of almost double that of an st tire.

RE: Length saved by 5W?

~7 feet to answer the OPs question. That is why we got a 5th wheel compared to a tt. My towed length is under 23 feet so I can fit in most state parks and usfs campgrounds.

Get up to speed asap...but I have found that most people change lanes to get out of my way.

RE: thought I knew

If they wired your truck with the battery charge line hot, then your 12v camper draw could potentially drain your truck battery.
I would be more worried about this. My gmc is always hot so just unplug it.

RE: Pin box suspension versus suspension hitch

Something else to think about is how long you will have the 5th wheel? Sounds like a new tow vehicle that could be used on multiple 5th wheels so getting the hitch could be cheaper in the long run.

You could also get correct track...it adds about 2 inches.

RE: why no "high end" 28 - 30 ft. fivers ???

I wish there were more options...usually people say check out Arctic Fox but that is only 1 manufacturer with few shorter floorplans. We mainly go to Ca state parks and usfs campgrounds were big rigs can't/don't go. I guess I'm not the average 5th owner.

RE: Tire changing ramp

Lippert does not recommend jacking on the axle tube or any suspension parts. Most newer trailers have the springs on top of the axle tube so you are jacking directly on a very thin wall tube and may cause it to collapse. I use a bottle jack on the frame near the tire I want to change. I also recommend jacking only when hitched to the truck as I do not want to put side stress on the landing gear of my 5th wheel.
My manual says that too but every tire shop I have been to jacks up under the u bolts on the axle. I wouldn't jack up on the axle tube due to the thin wall but have done it on the u bolts to check brake adjustment, etc. so it is pretty much the same weight that is on the wheel with a tire installed.

RE: Can you leave the hitch on the trailer?

My neighbor at my previous storage lot used to leave his hanging.
I once showed up and saw he was trying to get his hitch back in. I have no idea how long he had been there.
I went to my trailer and prepared it for travel. After checking the air in my tires I noticed one of them was a few pounds low, so I dug out the inflator and proceeded to fill it. I continued on as I watched him position his truck several times.
After more than 20 minutes I was hooked up and ready to pull out. I walked over and asked if there was anything I could do to help out. "I have it under control" I was told.
Almost drove by the next day to see if he was done ;)
Funny...he could have just released it onto the truck bed and moved it into the slots and then hooked up and left.

RE: 5th wheel came with p tires

I believe the original p tires covered the weight even with the 10% derating.
It's interesting that there are no posts saying these tires should be switched to what the manufacturer specified. We see that when someone is proposing to switch from st to lt tires. My father in law could be in legal jeopardy for using st tires on a rig that came with p tires!
