RE: TV Tire Question AT or HT

I went to an AT with my latest set of tires. So disappointed. Sure they chew through the snow great but the highway noise is the bugger. If you have dedicated snow tires, have a nice quiet tow and go with AS or HT tires.

RE: Towing with 2012 Ford Expedition

I'll go along with the others. Too much weight for your or anyone's Expedition.
7000 lbs will pretty much tap out all the trucks capacities.
Either go back to the dealer or sell the trailer yourself. You'll take less of a beating than trading the truck.

It's a longer trailer of course. Probably 35' bumper to ball. Upgrade your sway control with your weight distribution hitch.

RE: Trailer hitch rack for the back of my camper

I use a 30 gallon tote in the back of my truck. Also keeps the wood clean and dry at the camp ground.

lol
we might as well not even bothered replying eh Skipnchar
You and skip are great contributors to this forum. I just have to disagree with using a trailers GVWR to determine can a vehicle tow it. It's about as useless as using the dry weight. No one tows empty or max GVWR.

RE: Another can I tow this question

You'll be fine. 6000 lbs loaded probably. Around 800 lbs of tongue weight. Set up your weight distribution gear correctly and hit the road.

RE: Newbie looking to improve towing of new Surveyor SP-260

Good job. It looks like you made great improvements AND you know how your hitch works. Now with the added pressure on the bars, you'll have a lot more noise. Thats the only bad trait of the Equalizer.

RE: Bent brackets on 2 month old Dual Cam hitch, scary

New brackets arrived today. Will be installing and inspecting setup tonight to see if I can identify any other possible cause. I don't think weak brackets are solely to blame. There must be another explanation but I couldn't investigate until I had new brackets. Will post findings soon.
Are you camping this weekend? I'm heading to Lewis & Clark/Gavins tonight.
I hope those new brackets fix the problem!

RE: Newbie looking to improve towing of new Surveyor SP-260

Following up on your questions from the other day.
My trailer weighed 5235 from the factory. 6200 is loaded for a long weekend. Most the time 5800-6000.
Our Expeditions are the same suspension. 2003-2006 in Gen II. You have more horsepower 5.4L. I'm on my third set of P-metric tires. Been towing since 2005 with this truck. I run them at 44 psi during the season. Almost 125K on the ticker. I've almost driven it 100K myself!
Since your bars are pointing down on your EQ, you sure can raise the brackets before adding another washer. Much easier and may get you in the range you need for distribution.
I use a tape measure on mine and run across the scales when it's convenient.
You should be able to get this figured out.

You'll be fine. 4600 dry is probably the most you'd want to go.

RE: Another Sway control question

Turn the handle as much as you can. Back it off to run parallel to the bar's black body. This effectively turns it on.
There's a little bolt on the bottom that adjusts the tension. Leave it at current setting and see how it works.

RE: Newbie looking to improve towing of new Surveyor SP-260

Your trailer is a good match for an Expedition and don't be concerned with surpassing the axle weights of GVWR. I'm towing 6200 lbs and not exceeding (very close).
You're probably around 5100 lbs loaded and 650 lbs of tongue weight.
As mentioned, pump up the tires to 44 psi (max stamped on tire) cold. It does make a difference.
Dial in that Equal-i-zer. It's an excellent hitch for your combination. I'm the one who should have a pro-pride! (I'm using the Reese Dual Cam).
Move those brackets so your WD bars don't fall off. Your dealer should be kicked for such a bad install. You don't need to unhitch those bars to back into the campsite.
If the bars are parallel to the trailer's frame, add more washers to get more weight transferred to the front end of the Expy. You should be able to get it back to the unloaded height upfront. You'll need to use your tongue jack to get the job done of placing and removing those bars.
Good luck.

RE: Weight Distributing Hitch Problems/Set Up

Well, you guys were right. I had the tongue weighed this morning and we are just under 1400lbs. unloaded. I think the solution will be switching to a 1500lb. trunnion bar set up.
Now the next problem is that my factory Ford hitch is only set up for 1200lb. tongue weight according to the specs.
Think I need to upgrade the truck hitch as well?
If this weight is unloaded, won't your tongue weight drop or stay the same with the toys in back?

RE: Bent brackets on 2 month old Dual Cam hitch, scary

Ah man here we go again. Ok after the first time I got the bracket swapped out from dealer. Everything was good. Bought a new to me 1-ton truck and with the help of ericjames went through the process of getting everything readjusted for the new truck and it was right on with the reese instructions. Fast forward a couple weeks, we went out this past weekend. I noticed so pretty good bouncing on one stretch of highway north of Yankton but it seemed to be just that section of road. Got home yesterday and both snap up brackets were bent this time. Called Reese and they said to contact my dealer since all is under warranty and the dealer can check it and swap me out with the heavier brackets if needed. My concern is as the guy from Reese said it may be my setup as they have used the same brackets for 40 years. I know they shouldn't be bending so perhaps something in my particular setup needs some adjustment. I have inspected all the parts looking for some visual queue that something was making contact where it shouldn't and I just can't find anything. I am concerned as we are supposed to go out this weekend and this fall I am planning to let my parents use my rig to go to Colorado for an elk hunting trip. I don't want them having issues. I did notice that in the Reese instructions it says you can bolt the bracket in place on the outside which we have done. Don't know if that will help or not. Waiting for the dealer to call me back to see if we can get it in this week to have the setup checked.
ARRRGHH! This is so frustrating. We went through that whole set up to a "T".
Beside the fact that maybe they do need to be bolted to the frame, that darn ball shank and nutt are huge. Any indication they are hitting the trunnion bars or your Dual Cams are stressed?
Someone get to ride in the bed of your truck and watch the hitch action. I has to be something in the tight turning???

RE: Jeep Tow a TT?

I used to tow with an old Grand Cherokee V8. It was a good tow vehicle but like all had its limits. 26' and 4200 lbs was about it.
Towing with a Wrangler is a different deal. Great wheelbase with the four door but not a lot of mass or payload.
I'd recommend looking at these: R-Pod

You'll need the heavy duty payload package on f150 to do it. You may need super cab too.

RE: Weight Distributing Hitch Problems/Set Up

Just a guess but if your TT is at 9500 pounds loaded isn't your hitch weight around 1425 pounds? If so, maybe you need more than the 1200 pound distribution bars.
I have a Reese and they recommend that once the TT is on the hitch to raise the back of the vehicle with the tongue jack to make fastening the bars a little easier.
I agree. You may have a lot more tongue weight than the bars can handle.
Use you tongue jack to make grabbing the next chain link much easier. I think #2 is where you want to be.
