RE: RV Tire Recommendations

Thanks for the info. I hope their manufacturing department is as good as their PR department. :)

RE: Individual axle weights advice and opinions.

I wondered about the weight transfer and you're probably right about that being part of the problem. At least I can say that I don't any wheel severely overloaded anyway. It looks like my G-rated LT tires are probably severe overkill. :)
I'm going to recheck everything the next time I have the bikes onboard and see how that compares. I'm curious to see if the rear axle weights change very much, or if the loaded weight is evenly distributed.

RE: Tries to stay away from

In good conscience I could not recommend Carlisle 235/85-16 ST tires for a heavy trailer, in the 15,000 lb. range that is. I had 2 Carlisle ST tires blow out within a couple hours of each other. They had less than 8,000 miles and were 2 years old. They had been covered in storage and air pressure had always been maintained at max sidewall pressure since it was a heavy toyhauler. I'm running G-rated LT tires now. And keeping my fingers crossed of course. :)

RE: Tpm

I don't know about the others, but the TST could not be simpler. To enter a tire sensor, press a button, hold the monitor near the sensor, and press another button, press a last button to exit setup and you're done. High temperature and low pressure alarms can be easily set also. Very, very adjustable.

RE: Fifth wheel jack points

It's a CYA to prevent unaware individuals from jacking on an unsupported part of the axle. If they didn't say that, you just know someone would try to jack up their 5er by putting a jack in the middle of the axle. And then complain because "Nobody said I couldn't jack there."
I jack my toyhauler from under the U-bolts for the axle mount nearest the wheel. I honestly can't imagine how much material you'd have to put under the jack, and how high you'd have to jack the unit by lifting under the frame. YJ(acking)MV. :)

RE: Dual rear tire valves

I've had three sets of valve extensions on my rear duallies on my pickup and all three leaked to one degree or another. Two others rubbed on the inside of the tire almost ruining a tire before it was discovered.
I use a angled chuck, and an angled pressure gauge. This is the one I use:

RE: TST TPMS how to delete tire sensor from monitor?

The TST seems to be a good unit so I'm glad you got yours working.

RE: Individual axle weights advice and opinions.

Thanks for the input.
The numbers for each axle were taken with the toyhauler hooked to the truck and no bikes loaded. My hitch weight is 3,000 lbs. There just doesn't seem like there should be that much difference between the weights I got and the Cat scale weights. Color me confused.

RE: TST TPMS how to delete tire sensor from monitor?

From the manual:
"In standby mode, press the "CODE" button for 3 seconds and release after the beep. The tire icon will flash and the relevant sensor code will be displayed. Initial code setting for all the sensors is "FFF FFF". In this mode press the "+" or "-" buttons to select the tire which needs to be coded or initialized.
Delete Sensor Code: In this mode, pressing the "SET" button for 3 seconds will initialize the sensor code to "FFF FFF"."
Hope that helps.

RE: Health insurance

My insurance is with Golden Rule and has a $5000 deductible. It also has dental insurance included in the price of $310/month, which includes a $10 penalty for motorcycle riding :( . Since I've not met the deductible in the last year they lowered my deductible to $4000 this year.
I've not used them so I can't say if they are good or not, and I hope it stays that way. :)

Individual axle weights advice and opinions.

I need opinions or actual experience, either will do.
I just weighed my axles individually using a Sherline scale rated to 5000 lbs. I placed the scale under the U-bolt closest to the wheel and raised the axle just enough to allow the wheel to turn. The amount that I raised the tire didn't seem to affect the readings, since they didn't increase before the tire was completely off the ground.
I don't know exactly what the difference would be if I measured right on the wheel since I'm about 6" from the centerline of the tire. I'm thinking the reading I'm getting now is a bit high because of that.
I've scaled my toyhauler just as it is now and the weight from the Cat scale was 10,640 lbs.
My individual axle readings are 2400 lbs., 2400 lbs., 2400 lbs., 2500 lbs., 2200 lbs., and 3100 lbs. for a total weight of 15,000 lbs.
That's a difference of over 4,000 lbs, which seems a bit off, to say the least. Does this seem reasonable to anyone, or is my methodology too far off to be accurate? If anyone has had their axles weighted independently did the combined weights agree with Cat scale weights?
Any opinions would certainly be welcome. TIA.

RE: Pull Test ?

In a thread some time back, there was a discussion about mis-hitching, in particular the term "high-hitch" was bandied about. In that thread the possibility of a "high-hitch" was given as a primary reason to do a pull test. I, and a couple of other owners of a certain hitch, were vociferous in our responses that since you cannot mis-hitch our favorite hitch a pull test was unnecessary.
That is the basis of this "Did so, did not" repartee. I don't do a pull test because the design of my hitch makes a mis-hitch all but impossible. Locking the handle open is not a mis-hitch, that's a brain fart pure and simple. If you don't own a B&W hitch apparently a pull test is the only sensible thing to do if you wish to avoid awful and dire happenings. :)
And that's the truthhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

RE: ST or LT tires?

I read the article in Trailer Life (more confused than ever)! I've spent a better part of the day calling around to truck companies that deal with tractor trailer tires, hoping to find some more info. What I've been told (not sure how true it is) is that the LT tire is heavier duty and that a name brand (Firestone/Goodyear)LT235/80R16 "E" would be better than than the current Akuret ST235/80R16 "E" tires that are on the unit now. We do not have the money right now to go to new rims and bigger tires (not even sure if they would fit). Any thoughts? As has been mentioned before, replacing your OEM tires with lower weight rated tires than what is specified by the builder is not supposed to be done. Your ST235/80-16 are rated to 3450 lbs., an LT235/80-16 is rated to 3040 lbs.
I replaced my OEM ST235/80-16 Carlisle tires with a G-rated LT tire. I could do this because my wheels were rated for the 110 psi necessary for a G-rated tire. If my wheels had not been rated to 110 psi, I might very well have gone with an E-rated LT tire. However I know exactly what my trailer weighs and would have weighed individual axles before I made the step to E-rated LT tires, because of the weight limitations.

RE: ST or LT tires?

You probably shouldn't use E-rated LT tires due to load ratings. If you obey the load ratings you're probably stuck with either E-rated ST tires, lousy tires IMO, or G-rated LT tires if the wheels are rated for the higher pressures. Or you can change to 17.5" wheels and tires. Ya pays yer money, ya takes yer cherce.

RE: New Tires

However, as "He Who Shall Not Be Named" has posted, strictly speaking you are not supposed to replace tires with lower rated tires than what were originally on the unit. Just a heads up.

RE: New Tires

I have 3 axles- Trailer weighs 17k with nothing in it.
When I originally bought the rig I switched out the China bombs and bought HD 16" wheels and the G614's. In hind site I should have bought 17.5" wheels but I just was not educated enough.
So- I guess my point is that $325.00 plus/minus per tire for G614's is a lot if they are only going to last 3 years. That is why I am thinking of buying a high quality lower priced E rated tire and then switching them out say every 2-2.5 years.Unless you go back to ST tires putting an E-rated tire will not give you the load rating you need, since a standard 235/85-16 LT tire is only rated to 3042 lbs. That, of course, is assuming you have 7,000 lb. axles.

RE: China Bombs Got Me

"If a poster can verify without a doubt that none of those conditions ever existed with their tires than why did they not turn the tire in for expert examination?"
That's the rub. How exactly do you do that? And you wonder why people don't turn the incidents in! I had one professed expert tell me that I ran over an object and that's what caused my tire to blow out. Never mind that I was on the interstate, the tire was the last on on a triple axle, I know I didn't hit anything, and a second tire blew within 2 hours of the first. How do you prove otherwise? "He says, (s)he says."

RE: Power Awning?

We have the power awning and if it got damaged badly we would go back to a manual in a heartbeat. The power awnings are easier to put up and take down, but they have to be since they are so vulnerable. Ours moves around quite a bit in a mild breeze that you wouldn't even notice with a manual awning. We hardly put ours out because of that.
