RE: "Cosmotaf".. ask about traveling in

I don't know much about tornados (hurricane expert, Florida native) but I doubt there is a tornado proof shelter given the power of some of the bad ones.

RE: First time out!

Your truck will be adequate, good choice not going to far. Advice; be prepared for a few things to go wrong but you can minimize that by hooking everything up at your house and trying everything out. Otherwise laugh when you mess up and learn from it. Take your time setting up and breaking camp so you don't forget to do something. One of the most common mistakes is to let others interrupt you while you do these critical tasks. If people want to come and visit while you are setiing up or breaking camp, stop and sit down until they leave. Your confidence will grow with each trip.

RE: Goodyear Marathons Made in China?

In fact I read the entire NHTSA primer on pneumatic tires (all 707 pages)and the accepted wisdom is that degradation occurs faster after 5 years but the recommendation is still to inspect them regularly, keep them inflated to the proper level, and replace at the first signs of aging issues.
A lot of tire degradation happens inside the tire, and since I don't have X-ray vision I replace my trailer tires on a time basis, and a very conservative one at that. Between three and five years, tops, and never more than thirty thousand miles.
Ah, but there are other recommendations to address that as well and those issues are a result of abuse but I will not suppose I could possibly quote all 707 pages. You can educate yourself or swap tires every 5 years, 3 years, or any interval you choose. I will say tires are way more complex than I ever dreamed and the technology has progressed immensely over the years and there is real science behind them. The breakdown occurs in quality control inspections and routines as many tires have anomalies in them that will not affect their durability and service life. Anomalies that do affect these issues should be viewed as defects and not be sold. I think the Chinese have a quality control issue that Thailand has conquered.

RE: %#$ salesman

Apparently, what this country needs to do is ban "salespeople" since their job is to sell and replace them with gatekeepers. That way when you go into an RV dealership they can tell you what you can and cannot buy based on your driving experience, your tow vehicle, the color of your hair (can't have the paint job of a rig clashing with your personal style) etc. And don't forget the driving test, the eye test, maybe a physical and of course, a detailed test of your mechanical aptitude because the dealership should never sell a rig to someone who might have a problem driving it, setting it up or repairing it should it have a problem.
And it should be expanded to every retail setting. Go into a sporting goods store and walk up to the cash register with a top of the line set of golf clubs, the gatekeeper will be required to review your swing and decide if you are good enough for the clubs. Go grocery shopping, you will have to explain how you propose to prepare that steak. If they think you are going to overcook it, or put on too much salt, no sale.
Personally, I am smart enough to earn the money, and I think I am smart enough to spend it as I choose.
You are really going to extremes don't you think? Setting up a rig can be taught, repairing it can be taken to professionals, preparing a steak can also be taught.
The salesman could have still made a sale, but of a different TT that the TV could pull. He could also say that he isn't in a position to answer the question. By answering their question he took on the responsibility of their decision.
If I buy a huge steak and ask the butcher if I can cook it on my mini George Foreman grill that I have right here for him to look at and he assures me that I can then when that steak doesn't fit he needs to take some responsibility,
People look at salesmen, right or wrong, as experts in their field. It is at the very least unethical for the salesman to tell somebody their current equipment, that the salesman is looking at, is adequate when he doesn't know if it is or isn't.
Yes, the buyers should educate themselves and take responsibility but what do we need salesmen for if we can't ask questions and have a little faith that they will answer honestly. If I have to know everything about anything I buy then get rid of salesmen and just have cashiers to ring up the sale.
WesternRVparkowner is right.- else where does it stop?
When you go into a liquor store, must the clerk counsel you as to the hazards of drunk driving? When you eat at McDonald's, must the teenager behind the counter refuse to upsize your Big Mac Meal because you're obviously overweight?
No one to blame here but the guy that bought the tug/trailer, and that's an end to it.
Oh if we were just so willing to apply this idea to our own lives/government. But many promoting the idea here, would not agree if it were so.

I don't think you are going to get anywhere with it. It is very common in the RV world to title things a year later than produced. Do let us know what the DMV says.

RE: Trailer Wheel Ratings?

Conventional wisdom is the rating is stamped on the wheel on the back side or under the tire. I have not found mine so I suspect it is under the tire. Even if your wheels are only rated for 65 psi (D's-likely) taking them a few pound over should not pose a serious risk. The "E's" are rated at 80 psi and can carry a lot more weight. I have considered upgrading to "E's" on my next purchase for the reserve capacity and running them at 80 psi.

RE: Travel trailer Keystone Hornet

Did you have the HWH or fridge on elec? In my keystone Hornet I can run my MW and my AC at the same time along with the fridge if all 3 are not powering up at the same time. Adding the WH to the mix will sometimes blow the breaker. When you say the CB is tripping, do you mean the inetrnal 30 amp or the power pole 30 amp? Have you tried using an adapter and using the 50 amp plug? many 30A receptacles are worn out from use and do not supply good power. Have you checked the voltage and amperage at the supply receptacle? What is the internal voltage you are seeing? As voltage drops (common in older CG systems) amperage is increased and can lead to CB's tripping.

RE: Looking for better Sway Control

Ok, I have found some numbers that might help, and I think I have an idea of my problem, but I need to get out and weigh my setup.
From the manufacture, the campers UVW is 5300, and Dry Hitch Wt is 480.
I think I might have too much weight in the back of the camper. The rear hard sided bed slides in for travel, and I typically store all my gear under where the bed slides in. I would guess the gear adds around 200lbs. I also have a bike rack in the back, but I typically
only have one bike on it at about 30lbs. I have some gear up front but the storage is pretty small, so I might only have 75lbs up there.
Insufficient tongue weight is a common problem causing sway. You need real numbers to be sure

Oh yes it is possible. When I saw the floorplan and price on a make/model I liked I made a deal and had them build one in the colors my wife wanted. Turned out to be a great decision. We have had it going on 8 years now and have loved it.
