RE: Dodge front end situation....ugh!

Update..... I am at the second Dodge dealer as I type this. Sure enough both left and right ball joints have what looked like an 1.5 inch of play when they pried up on it. Looks like my local tire dealer was correct and my selling Dodge dealer has lost me as a customer.

RE: Dodge front end situation....ugh!

I don't understand how the TIRE DEALER "is selling a bill of goods."
Tire dealers don't do suspension work.
If they find a part out of spec during an alignment, they abort and send you on your way, NO CHARGE.
Actually this tire dealer is a full service Goodyear truck shop that sells and installs Moog products.

RE: Dodge front end situation....ugh!

As much as tires cost it's probably not a bad idea to get an alignment done. In your case since there is some question as to whether or not new parts are needed I suppose you could always take it to another alignment shop and get a second opinion.
Friday...... I found another Dodge dealer who alos has an alignment machine large enough for my truck and made an appointment for Friday.

RE: Dodge front end situation....ugh!

Common practice for the kids at the tire shop to try and sell you front end parts..They work on a commission. If you had no front end issues and the tires are wearing evenly why are you wasting your money on an alignment you don't need? In over 50 years of driving I can't remember ever having a wheel alignment done. If the tires are wearing evenly..leave it alone!
B.O.
We just installed brand new tires and I always learned (right or wrong) to align the front at that time. Have I been wrong in that thinking?

RE: Dodge front end situation....ugh!

Doesn't look like Dodge has fixed all their problems yet!
Just to reiterate. The tire shop notified me I had front end issues and the Dodge dealer disagrees. I have had no steering or handling issues of any sort or tire wear problems. At this point I am not sure that I am having any wear issues at all.

RE: Dodge front end situation....ugh!

the ball joint has about .090 up and down play it is within spec.I would put in some Napas and get the new dodge upgrade steering linkage. I did all that stuff and still have a truck that wanders. But the ball joints and tie rods are pretty notorious for going out. There is a dealer on ebay who sells the upgraded steering linkage kit for 350 or so.I think the upgrade was in 09.
Thanks for the info. I have 30k of warranty left so I think I may do those upgrades then.

RE: Dodge front end situation....ugh!

Yes, 4X4 dodges have had front end issues. I would take the information from a certified alignment shop and drop it in the Dodge dealers lap, showing him the paper work. If he cannot or will not fix it, then insist that he prove it to you by doing an alignment.
I found a Dodge dealer a few cities over that has a alignment machine capable of handling the truck so I am going to dump it in there lap. I figure that way if he can't align due to wear he can simply warranty the parts while it's there and if he can align it then all is good and my local tire shop is staffed by a bunch of idiots.

RE: Dodge front end situation....ugh!

Why not let the selling dealer align it? When they can't they can then fix the issues? :)
If it were just that simple. He does not have a Machine that can handle the 3500.... Go figure.
Then how can he say there is nothing wrong? If he cannot put it on an alignment machine he cannot say for certain there is nothing wrong. It is just that simple.
Looking at the service manual to measure ball joint play all you need is a forked pry bar and a dial indicator. The dealer can't check the alignment but he can check for worn ball joints/tie rods which he did and he says are all in spec. The tire shop on the other hand has the machine but says the ball joints and tie rods are so out of spec that he can't align the truck.....

Dodge front end situation....ugh!

This past Saturday I purchased and had 4 new tires installed on my 2008 Ram 3500. The tire shop said that they could not align the truck due to worn out ball joints and a worn tie rod. Ok no problem I have the extended Dodge warranty which covers such items. Today I drop the truck off at my selling dealership to get the frontend repair work done along with a few other minor issues and low behold the dealer calls me a few hours later saying the there are no front end problems at all and everything is well within spec. So on one hand I have my tire dealer which specializes is light and HD trucks telling me that he can't sell me an alignment due to wear and on the other hand I have my dealer saying everything is ok. None of my local Dodge dealers have a front end machine that can handle this size truck so I guess my next step is to find the closest Dodge dealer that can align the truck and let them have a go at it.
Thanks for letting me vent :)

RE: Why Antifreeze if no water?

I blow and drain out the low points then follow up with pink. Adding the antifreeze takes all of 10 minutes and cost under $10.00. I can't come up with one good reason NOT to use antifreeze.

RE: OHIO RALLY GROUP 2012 SCHEDULE

FYI..... I found indoor un-heated storage with a concrete floor for only $10.00 a foot for the winter season. You can put your rig in at anytime and get it out in May. Door is almost 14ft high. The company is in North Ridgeville and there name is Chapin Logistics.

RE: Help what to get!!

I recently ordered a NuWa HitchHiker Discover America. However, you can only order these until Sept. 15, as they are not taking orders after that date. NuWa is a high-quality manufacturer that stands behind their products.
Mike
How is NuWa going to stand behind there product once they cease to exist?

RE: some people just dont get it.....

"You can't fix stupid", that is only common sense.
No its not common sense. People dont know if they are not told. This may have been the guys first time camping. No one is born knowing where the boundaries are or how to use a dump station or any of the other things that seasoned campers take for granted.

RE: What options would you buy (or not buy) again?

Slide out bike rack. What a mistake. It lengthens the rear to a point that the rear bumper drags on any incline when the rack is pulled out. Once it drags the rack it then kinks the rack frame making it really hard to push back in and pin.

RE: Campgrounds near Solon, Ohio

Didn't Roundup Lake used to be a Yogi Bear/Jellystone property? I had heard that Jellystone dropped them for apparently not meeting their minimum performance standards/requirements. Just something that I had heard...not sure how true.
Yes correct, they are part of morgan rv now. The staff told us that next year to camp even on weekends you'll have to pay a membership fee. Hope this doesn't happen its a very nice campground.
Not going to happen. Morgan dropped there plans of making Roundup a private resort. The park is still very nice. It has had a few tough years for sure but it looks like a commitment has been made to bring the park back up to where it was a few years ago. Roundup is not perfect but I still think it is the nicest park in the area.

RE: Opinions on v10 and 8.1 vs 5.4 and 6.0 for towing 5ver.

How much weight are you talking about towing? Heavy duty long wheelbase gas pickup probably weighs around 7,000lb. Add the fully loaded up fiver you are towing, combine that weight with the truck. That weight amount will steer you toward the right decision. Lightweight fiver(7,000-8,000lb), the smaller engines will do fine provided they are equipped with the correct axle(4.30). Heavy fiver(12,000-14,000lb) makes for an easy decision. 6.8 V-10 or 8.1 V-8, again equipped with correct axles (4.10,4.30).
I sort of disagree with you Skup. While weight is a factor here he can't discount how much more power it takes to comfortably pull a taller fiver through the wind when compared to a TT.

RE: Opinions on v10 and 8.1 vs 5.4 and 6.0 for towing 5ver.

None of the mentioned engines are fuel misers so with that said I would simply find the one with the most torque. I would bet that would be the V-10. My 6.0 towed my 33ft TT ok but I would not want to have towed a much taller 5th wheel with it.

RE: Get Rid of Those Stupid I.D. Bracelets!!!

I don't know. I have been at campgrounds that required the paper bracelets and I just dont see the big deal. If it helps keep the riff raff out of the campground then I think its a fine idea. Often at campgrounds I see locals simply walking in to and using the campgrounds amenities. If wearing a paper bracelet is biggest beef that I have with a CG then I count my blessings.
