RE: Confusion about hitches

Find a flat parking lot or road. Measure ground to edge of fender well both front and rear wheels on one side. Hook up trailer and re-measure ground to fender well both front and rear wheels. This will give you an idea of what the added weight of the trailer tongue is doing to your truck. Get some feel to how it could be affecting your truck. Tire wear is also a concern if you have excessive weight on the rear of the truck.

RE: Ford PSD 6.7L

I've got a 2011 F350 crewcab/full 4 door, short bed. I'm getting 18 to 23 mpg when NOT dragging the TT. Hooked up to TT I get 13 mpg, up hill and flat ground. I just bought the AFE cold air intake box with programmer. Haven't had time to install yet. I have 60,000. No problems. Couple annoying things about this truck is my oil change schedule is every 7,000. But the DEF tank runs low at 5,000. Also you 2011 owners, I was returning home thru Portland/Vancouver and estimated I had just enough fuel to get me into Longview to re-fuel. At 30+ miles to empty (and only 20 to go to fuel station) truck starts giving warnings and soon goes into limp mode. At 20+ miles to empty the truck shuts down and glides to the side of the road (only 2 miles to fuel station & exit in sight). Have to tow both truck and trailer (didn't know it was just low on fuel with 20+ miles to empty indicated). Turns out Ford has built in protection for the diesel engine to prevent it from running out of fuel and severely & expensively damaging the engine. Seemed to me Ford should spell that out clearly and loudly to prevent this from happening to new owners.

RE: Using Travel Trailer Through Winter

I use my TT year round. It's plugged into 30 amp while parked in the driveway between jobs. I leave a radiant heater in the hallway set at about 65F. The first 32 degree day I go out and slowly bring my gas thermostat up tell the heater just turns on. That's how I leave it set. So now at freezing temps my enclosed underbelly gets heated and if the power drops off the gas will pickup and protect the TT during the power outage. With the radiant heater on, propane useage is reduced and I don't have to keep filling my propane tanks as much.

RE: Weight Dist. Hitch vs 2012 Silverado 2500HD

SeaBeeDaddy, If you come thru the Columbia River Gorge passing thru Pendleton and Hermiston, and the winds are up. You'll learn to really appreciate the sway control hitch. My thoughts are the sway control in the truck controls the truck thru automatic braking to control the TRUCK sway. If your TRAILER starts to swing back and forth from the wind, by the time the TRUCK sway kicks in, I'd think you'd be in some serious trouble. I picture the trailer already swing back and forth uncontrolably. Better safe than sorry. Get the sway control hitch. When I had my lighter weight trailer, 500# tongue wt, I many times didn't use the sway control bars. But there were a few times the winds were so high, I pulled off the road and hitched up the sway bars before continuing. Good luck and welcome to RVing. Lotta REALLY experienced RVer's here willing to spend the time to pass on good information.

RE: Does this upgrade work?

Bill, I've been researching upgrading to a cold air intake for my F350. The shop I've been dealing with said that unless I did a lot of modifications, exhaust, intake, etc., they don't really see the need for a programmer. I don't know yet if I agree with that. More research. Have you joined a forum for your truck?? I would think you would get more responses.

RE: small electric griddle?

I have the Cuisinart like Big Katuna describes. Bought at Costco. Nice thing about this one is the grill surfaces detach and it makes a real easy clean up. Washing them in the small TT sink is pretty easy. I have another George Foreman grill w/ a round top cover. So it cooks only from one side (only bottom surface is heated. It's bigger and more combersome and more difficult to wash. But when we've got the table outside, it's kinda nice to cook and sit outside with it.

RE: scissor jacks

As others stated a dry lube is the best. Dry lube will not collect dust/dirt while driving. The unfortunate offset of dry lube is you must repeatedly apply it. So I carry a spray can in my truck and EVERY time I extend jacks after road travel I spray to prior to and during jack extension. Generally they are still OK when leaving the camp site.

RE: Oregon and Washington Coast Camping in August

Just remember. If you want peace and quiet, it's not often found in the state camp grounds. Kids screaming, crying, playing. Now don't anyone get your skirts ruffled. I'm NOT saying this is a BAD THING. I'm just making a statement of fact. And it just depends on what your looking for. GENERALLY the RV parks are more controlling about noise, noise limits. Here's a really nice park I've stayed in the past. Beach access. Owner, Susan, provides wood and fire pits. RE: Do antennas even work anymore?

I bought an antenna at Costco. I plug it into the DSS connection on the outside of the trailer. Place the antenna in a convenient high location. Connect my tv cable to the DISS in connector and there it is. I get more channels than my TT installed antenna.

RE: New Flagstaff V-Lite 30WRKSS

Sweet. My first TT was a V-lite w/ rear slide and front bath. They always stood behind their product. Only problem I ever had was with the Concertone Stereo. It was a on going nightmare tell the day I traded the TT in.

RE: Our Favorite places to eat at in BAJA

Anthony Bourdain just did a Baja show. It was really good. From food carts to high end chef restaurants. He talked with locals and business owners from Tijuana to Ensenada. Their economy has been hugely negatively affected by the impact of the ongoing drug wars and random kidnappings and killings. As would be expected. He interviewed a group in the Tijuana area that is refusing to allow the drug wars to affect their life styles. Interesting.

RE: Information Discussion for Gate Guards

Hmmm, I've followed this link for some time. Even told a friend about this industry and he and his wife are planning on joining your ranks. Really respect all of you for what you do and live thru (floods, dry dusty spells, mud and rain, heat, rattle snakes, etc). But I am now convinced those oil companies are making out like bandits. The hours you put in for $175 per day. Somebody is getting screwed and it's NOT the oil companies.
