RE: Help with gun selection

Pistols with rifled barrels do very poorly with shotgun shells as the rifling spreads the shot immensely. My advice is to carry a shotgun with both shot and slugs. It's easier to hit something with a shotgun/rifle than a pistol. Maybe a 20 gauge shotgun single shot which would be light weight and the recoil with the light weight won't be as fierce as a 12 gauge. JMO doncha know. Shot shells/snake shot for hand guns would do no good at bigger than a snake. They are either #9 or #11 shot depending on the caliber and at 10 feet the pattern is about 4 foot, so I don't know how effective they would be. They would be great for shooting small birds inside a barn

RE: Newton KS to Albuqerque, NM via Hiway 54

A couple of other potential quick stops along the way if you choose to go Dodge City would be the Fort Larned National Historic Site, and the Carnival Heritage Museum and the Edwards County Mid America Museum both located in Kinsley. Also wanted to add that Seven Winds in Liberal is a Passport America Park. It sounds like they have added Wifi and cable since we stayed there in 2010. Still gets mixed reviews. Seven Winds used to be B&B. The guy that owns/owned it was a grouchy SOS he didn't get along with anyone. He had a stroke and I don't know if he is still alive. A couple of his kids came from AR to run the place and were going to try to make some improvements. They changed the name because it had such a bad reputation because of the ol man. The granddaughter is running the place. They did make the cable TV work and installed a working Wi-Fi. I will find out in late June if anything is new

RE: Newton KS to Albuqerque, NM via Hiway 54

Ran US-54 in a big truck, always liked to get off the "I roads" when I could. Liberal KS was always a nice stop. There is the Seven Winds RV Park there. Never stopped but it's part of Good Sam. Stop by "Dorothy's House" while your in town. The truck stop on the west side of town use to have a nice thick cut pork chop that was worth the stop. That truck stop is no longer there. 7 Winds is an older park been there for years. It has some shade and will be the cheapest. The Wi-Fi and cable TV work great. There is usally some work campers there. A newer park East of town with absolatly no shade and never will be. Every thing is crushed rock (gravel) . There are some spots at the fair grounds off Western Ave, no shade there either. Just after you cross the Cimarron River headed West about a mile is a RV park down along the river. There will be deer and other wild life running through the park. There are trucks on US 54 but its never been a problem for me. They most likely will be driver faster than you. Dorothy's house was an old farm house built in the late 1800's and moved to town a bunch of years ago to become Dorothy's house

RE: Use of Orange/Yellow cones is a must!

Lots of truck drivers aim for those cones. They try to get close enough to slide them over a couple feet, but often end up running over them. Have seen it happen over and over again. I love doing that on the highway So YOU are that guy! :) I was setting up a work zone on a very busy road once and a guy ran over the cone just as I was placing it. I at least wait until they place them. Some times they set them up so you have only a few inches on either side. I would hate to be worker in highway construction. I have seen signs in other states that say hit a mower or a worker and go to jail

RE: Las Vegas to Denver via I-70 any tips on roads

Last August the drive east was easy with little traffic after the heat in Vegas. Stopped in Beaver KOA but be aware of a tire scam at the truck stop at the north end of town. The climb through CO is mostly gentle until around Vail where it was nice to have a turbo diesel at altitude. You will enjoy the trip. We stayed there many years ago and it was a KOA and again the next year and it was not a KOA and stayed there 3 or 4 years later and the lay out was all different. I don't remember if it was a KOA then or not, but mentioned to the gal behind the counter that we had stayed there 4 years ago and she said ah honey it has changed hands 3 times since then

RE: ST LOUIS TRIP

Never stayed at Casino Queen they were always closed in Sept. But have stayed in St Louis RV PK, only one in St Louis 21 blocks from down town. Not in the best part of town but never felt threatened there. There is one in Cahokia IL just across the river. Not in the best part of town either be never felt threateded there either, and the steak house next door is very good. It is about 5 min from down town St Louis. About 20 min out of town SouthWest of St Louis in Fenton there is a place called Covered Bridge. When in the St Louis area I will stay at Covered Bridge.

I see a thread about androd and its apps. Im about to jump into the smart phone thing. So which phone? When I go shopping I ask the clerk what phone they have and a good many of them have the Samsung III. So what phone do you have and if you were to get a new one which one would you choose. Those that have Verizon is the 2 gig enough data for you and your wife

RE: Hand Guns

Hi Dianne, My goal is to point out that gun ownership comes with high risks. Since no one on RVnet claims to have whipped out a weapon for defense, why is taking that risk valid? So it is off topic to talk about consequences of gun ownership? So be it. They won't be able to travel to Canada with firearms--and Ontario alone has more campgrounds than the whole of the USA. moderator note....the only posts I have had to delete are pianotuna's. The rest of you have been great with your advice and suggestions. piano....if your goal is to get this topic closed...you will have to try harder.... DianneOK I think a small percentage of RV'ers are on RV net. I have been concerned only twice in my life and no one know if or when the next time will be. I was raised on a farm in the mid west and we had rifles and shot guns but no hand guns. When I was 14 mom and dad left me and my sister home while they went to town (15 miles away) to go shopping. Someone came to our door and wanted to borrow, use the phone. I didn't know the person so I refused to let him in. He insisted until I picked up the shot gun that was in the living room and racked the slide, he turn and left. The other time and Im much older. We were camping in the desert alone and about 3AM someone drove to within a few feet of the camper door. Two of them got out and started walking around. I had no idea what they were up to and didn't ask. I reached for my Ruger SR40 sat up in bed and pointed it at the door. Had they forced open door I would have opened fire. They walked around for a little bit and then left. They didn't take anything. I didn't turn on a light or make any sounds. No one knows if or when then next time will be that I may need to defend myself, but I will be ready. I have no need, desire, or reason to ever go to Canada so not worried at Canadian laws

RE: southern Kansas, Ok, & NM

I went to College 10 miles southwest of Guymon....and there is not much there. Guymon will have Diesel and any amenities you need. Liberal is a bigger town in the area and would also have anything needed. You would also not be very far from Dodge City, you could visit Boot Hill if you were interested in that. As you probably know from driving I-40 through the Texas panhandle, get ready for lots of wind! No way Panhandle A&M. Me to but was only there a year I was there 4 years, I liked it, but it is not for everyone! I was in 1963 and on the ROTC rifle team. I worked at the dairy to pay my room and board. Along came Vietnam and off to war I went.

RE: Length "fudge factor"

I'm looking for input from experienced RVers on how much "fudge factor" there is concerning RV lengths and campsite spots. For example, suppose a state park site has a length limit of 30', but I show up with a 31.5' trailer, do you think I'd be in trouble? It seems to me that there are probably 18 inches of wiggle room, but I was wondering what others' experiences have been? Thanks, Matt Old_Biscuit said They are NOT going to whip out a tape measure and check........Well they may not whip out a tape measure but at Carpinteria St Pk in Carpinteria CA if your over the line you will be told to leave

RE: Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone

Nearly everyone who needs cell service leave the park to get it This statement is about as wrong as you could get. While cell service is not available in the Fishing Bridge campground, there is service nearby just to the east and at Canyon Village area. To top that off, anyone saying that West Yellowstone is closer to the attractions is once again wrong. It is outside the park and one must drive back and forth through the animal jams each day. Yellowstone is huge and requires much patience in driving around. Keith 10-4
