RE: I-5 Bridge Collapse at Mount Vernon, WA

As paulj observed...a good thing can be had here too. Canadians get a good shot at Birch Bay and Decpetion Pass now. I just think that is so cool...finally, we get to slide into a good spot, up front, and kick-back....ahhh, life is good, eh?
Gary Haupt
Yeah right. Birch Bay's always loaded with Canucks no matter what.

RE: Bikes for trip to Yellowstone and Utah

We're trying to decide if we need to bring our bikes for a trip to Yellowstone and the national parks in Utah. We're not mountain bikers but we do enjoy nice road routes of 20 miles or less. Just wondering if we'll miss the bikes if we leave them at home or if they'll stay on the truck most of the time while we're at the parks.
Most of the responses appear to be from mountain/trail bikers, and you sound like a road biker to me ("nice road routes of 20 miles or less"). Road biking and trailing biking are very different sports.
Although I have both kinds of bikes, I am a road biker at heart and prefer long distance rides on asphalt. Having been to the 5 NP's in S. Utah I would love to return, this time with my 27-speed road bike and do some road work in each park...not interested in riding trails on my trail bike. Each park has good asphalt roads inside the parks. Great scenery, hills, and altitude for a great workout.

RE: Stay away from Western Washington if you're headed to BC

Acording to WA DOT they now have an alternate route open around the problem. Go to their web site and it shows the route to be used.
This is my home. Do not doubt me on this. Hopefully it'll be better later, but you're better off staying away on the busiest weekend of the year after this catastrophe. I know the DOT detour and all the others. You don't want to be there this weekend. Trust me.

Stay away from Western Washington if you're headed to BC

It's on all the news channels, but just to reinforce: if you are headed to B.C., DO NOT plan on doing so via I-5 in Western Washington.
As of 7pm last night, all lanes of I-5 are lying at the bottom of the Skagit River in Mt. Vernon, 45 miles south of the border.
It is Memorial Day Weekend and the back roads in N.W. Washington will likely be parking lots into the foreseeable future.
If you do not need to be here: Stay Away.

RE: I-5 Bridge Collapse at Mount Vernon, WA

There are 3 ways around this mess: (1) off I-5 through Conway and then the back roads through the tulip fields to WA-20 (and vice-versa), (2) the College Way exit off I-5 in Mt. Vernon and thewn up old 99 over the new bridge to WA-20 located at the I-5 Anacortes exit (and vice-versa, once again), (3) avoiding I-5 altogether and taking WA-9 anywhere between Woodinville and the Canadian border. These are all 2 lane roads and option (1) is 2 lane farm roads and option(3) north of Arlington is essentially a 2 lane, slow, little scenic drive all the way to Canada. Using it as a major north/south corridor at this time will clog all the small side roads back to the population/commerce centers in the I-5 corridor.
I-5 IS traffic and commerce between Seattle and Vancouver, BC. Losing the bridge over the bridge is devastating for this area, and to suggest that there are viable options and alternatives at this time is wishful thinking and a dream.
It is Memorial Day weekend. If you coming from south of here and have reservations for anywhere in Skagit or Whatcom Counties (i.e. Deception Pass SP, Birch Bay SP, Beachwood RV Resort, etc.), CANCEL THEM and swallow your cancellation fee. You'll be doing yourself a favor and the rest of us as well, because you will not be contributing to clogging the roads this weekend in N.W. Washington.

RE: I-5 Bridge Collapse at Mount Vernon, WA

For all practical purposes I-5 is the ONLY route for traffic and commerce between Seattle and Vancouver, BC. This is devastating for this part of the State and the N.W.

RE: Chaco Canyon well worth the drive!

I have been there twice solo and stayed in a tent and it doesn't matter what you stay in,yes,it is an amazing experience. Plan on several days to do all the hiking you can to the various sites. There are some stiff uphills on a couple of trails to get to the top of the mesas, but they are basically short and the rest of the hike is basically level.
The first time I was there it dropped down to 20 degrees at night and it took me 30 minutes to get out of the bag and down to the restroom which I found to be packed as it had electric heat. The guy camped across from me had two large german shepards that were doing a bit of barking and growling at something after dark and in the morning the owner found them curled up under his pickup and they didn't want to come out. Don't know what they were growling at,but I guess they decided that discretion was better than valor.
Read Louis L'Amour's "Haunted Mesa"...that may give you some insight to what freaked out the dogs.

RE: Unwanted guests, lets hear your story....

I am a retired Special Education teacher...worked with guys like the one who began this thread for many years. If he seems a bit "off" he is, and it's not his fault. I worked hard teaching "social cues", manners, etc., and we reinforced these day after day, because they were forgotten day after day...some stuck, some didn't. If this guy is mildly retarded and now an adult he may or may not be getting continued social skills training if he is fortunate enough to be working in a shelter workshop.
In a positive way you need to be direct with folks like this or you WILL be taken advantage of, because he's just trying to be friendly, and probably means you no harm. "This is our family time/our dinner time/etc., and you need to leave now." If he complies, great. If he does not, or if things escalate then or in the future, then you need to start working higher up the chain of command.
Too bad we need to sometimes deal with "stuff" like while out camping, but I'd much rather deal with this guy than a bunch of obnoxious campers drinking too much beer a campsite or two down the way.

"Who is this 'Marcus' guy?" Sequel

I see that my post above is closed so I will open a new post to say thanks for all those who responded. Now I know who Marcus is.
I truly had no idea who this guy was. I didn't know how else to find out so I figure I'd get the answer here at Marcus's blog. This is the place for us RVers to get our answers
I meant no disrespect to Marcus. I appreciate the service his corporation provides to campers like us, and my hat is off to him. Thank you, Marcus.

Who is this "Marcus" guy?

When I first log onto rv.net the first thing I see under the logo is "New! Dear Marcus" with an explanation that this guy, Marcus, is eager to help all of us find what we're looking for by writing into this forum, as if Marcus is somehow the guy behind all this helpful info and not us helping each other.
Who is this guy and what does he do? I just see "Marcus" as a photo of a guy with a paragraph written next to his photo, nothing more. Makes no sense to me.
Someone, please, enlighten me.

RE: Border Agents rude and difficult at Nogales

Travelling to Victoria or to Vancouver, BC used to be an enjoyable day trip for us. Not since 9/11. I have found Canadian border agents to be agreeable. Not so U.S. agents when returning home...brash and arrogant for the most part. We rarely go to B.C. anymore because we do not want to endure the almost inevitable negative experience of crossing our border coming back home...puts a sour taste at the end of a nice day.

RE: Rethinking 2 week visit out West

My suggestion: pick an area (e.g. Moab, Escalante, Durango). Using a compass with that town as the apex, score a circle with a radius of 50 miles around it (OR 75 or 100: it's up to you). Spend your two weeks exploring within that circle. Pretty much guarantee you'll stay busy, you'll have a wonderful experience, and you won't be going crazy trying to see "the whole S.W." in one trip.
That's what we try to do...works for us and we then have a reason to return at a later time to see another part of Utah, Colorado, etc.

RE: Yakima Sportsman SP

Sunday is always a good day to enter a State Park. Many that have to work for a living will be leaving.

That's what I figure, but when it comes to Yakima and wine tasting, things can fill up. I love not having to go to work on Monday morning anymore.

Yakima Sportsman SP

I just heard about the "Spring Barrel Tasting Wind and Dine" in Yakima 4/24-4/28. I have visions of Yakima being packed with wine tasters. Wife, dog, and I are pulling into Yakima Sportsman about 2pm on Sunday, 4/28. It's first come first served because it's too early for SP reservations. Are we going to have difficulty getting a site with hookups?
