RE: Who here cooks inside camper or Outside camper?

I do all my cooking in the camper. I use either the microwave or my digital pressure cooker. I don't like to bother with gas. I have not had any lingering smells in the camper that I have noticed. Food smells don't bother me anyway, and bears are not an issue around here.
Some trips, I don't cook at all. I grab bread and a jar of peanut butter. Food on a trip is not that important to me. I am more concerned about having a good supply of coffee for my Keurig!

RE: Kerville Schreiner Park

Wow! Kerrville Schreiner is one nice park. I had a great time this weekend. My site was in the full hookup Deer Loop. Every night, a herd of deer grazed slowly past. The pull throughs were big and roomy. Everything was clean. The trails were awesome. There weren't many people there. I don't think people know about it now that it isn't a state park. The part be the river didn't impress me as much.

RE: Hard boiling fresh eggs

I use my electric pressure cooker. 6 minutes at high pressure. Then let thd pressure drop naturally. Shells peel off like gloves. Take them right out of the fridge- two dozen at a time.

Kerville Schreiner Park

I spent over an hour trying to get a spot in one of the nearer state parks. There wasn't a site to be found on the weekend I wanted. Then I remembered going hiking at Kerrville Schreiner a while back with my youngest son. We really liked it. I think it was still a state park at the time. I checked their site and had my pick of the place. I wonder if people forget that it is there now that it isn't a state park. Has anybody camped there recently?

RE: Mountain Advisory???

I learned that all I had to do on those mountains was take my foot of the gas! The speed limit was 65 mph. With my foot off the gas, I barely broke 55! The trip to the Grand Canyon was awesome. My little camper towed like it wasn't even there. The only mishaps were a lost bumper plug and a severed breakaway cable, both at the very end of the trip. Now I want to plan a two week long summer trip going to a different Texas state park every two nights.

RE: changing a tire

You need to expierement with this scenario in your driveway before you leave so that you may aquire the ability to do it if needed. Also this will help decide what tools you may need.
Thanks! That is a great suggestion. I will do that for sure. Nothing worse than trying something on the side of the road for the first time when you are already upset.
btd35- thanks for helping me turn my brain on by saying, " Check with your dealer though. They should know which is best for you." That reminded me that I have the manual on Evernote. Sure enough, it tells me to use a standard scissor Jack. It also has full illustrated instructions. I'm set to go now!

changing a tire

Okay, here I go asking another amazingly stupid question. I am about to take my longest trip to date. While talking with a friend, he suggested carrying extra tires. That got me to thinking about tires in general. In the event I am forced to change a tire (I have a tire service), I don't have a clue how to do it. I have spent the last hour searching for tips. Everything I've found is for those campers with two wheels on each side. The Colby T has one tire on each side, so none of those methods would work.
1) what do I use to raise the flat of the ground to get the tire off?
2) where do I put the Jack or whatever?
3) do I need more than one spare?

RE: Mountain Advisory???

You also stated you're only taking 4 days for the trip from San Antonio to the Grand Canyon. If so, it's not worth it for you. You'll spend a lot on fuel, you'll be driving long hours and you'll get there and turn around.
You don't understand. That is exactly what we want. We will have a full day to gawk at the canyon. For us, the fun is in the trip and the unexpected stops along the way to read historical signs, eat at new places, or check out scenic overlooks. If we had more time, we wouldn't spend any more time at the canyon. To each his own.

RE: Mountain Advisory???

If your TV has a tow/haul (or similar) mode - use it. You may need to pick a gear (manual mode or similar) equal or lower then the gear that would be required to drive up the grade.
Well, I do have that and always turn it on when towing. I just never understood what the +/- buttons were for. I just looked at the manual, and it explains in pretty good detail what I need to do. Thanks for steering me in that direction.
I may live near the "hill country", but I have never had to change gears in my Silverado. This thing came loaded, and I only bothered to learn the features I needed (or understood). Kind of embarrassing to admit that.

RE: Mountain Advisory???

Thanks, tatest. You have eased my mind. I guess my only worry now is if there is snow. If that happens, we'll just head somewhere else. This is such a quick trip (4 nights) that we can't wait for the conditions to get better. My son and I are just wanting to see the canyon, not really spend a lot of time there. For us, this is a "training expedition" meant to give us practice with a longer trip. Since I am a teacher, I have the luxury of 10 weeks off in the summer. We have some ideas in mind for longer trips, but want to test the waters with this quicky.

Would someone who has the directory visit this weblink and tell me if this is the correct information for AZ10. If it is, the free sample has everything I need to know.

Mountain Advisory???

Okay... I have been doing the RV thing for two years now. Until now, my farthest trip has been under 200 miles and completely on flatlands. Now I am going from San Antonio to the Grand Canyon. I used the Good Sam trip planner and got a "Mountain Directory Advisory # AZ10". I admit to not even realizing there would be mountains on my trip. But, in order to see this so called advisory, they want me to pay $20 for a service I will probably never use again.
MY QUESTION: Is there a place where I can find the same information for free?
And...at the risk of sounding more stupid than I already do, is there something special I need to learn to pull the Colby T through mountains? Is there a training site I can visit to educate myself? I will Google it, but thought someone might have a site they like.

RE: De-winterizing and Sanitizing logistics for newbies.

Can't speak for anyone else. I worried my camper before leaving at the end of my last pre-winterized trip. I will dewinterize at a campsite. If you are buying it, ask the dealer to someone it for you.
Other folks will have opinions popping in soon.

RE: Austin to big bend

I know I'm not answering your question. Anytime I take 10 headed west, I never stop to see anything. If there was something of interest, I didn't notice it.
I prefer to take 90. There are several interesting things that way:
On 90:
Alamo village in Bracketville
The Judge Roy Bean historic site in Langtry
The overlook at the Pecos River
Lake Amistad
The beautiful town of Alpine
Short segways:
Marfa
Fort Davis
Mac Donald Observatory

RE: Easiest towing small TT?

I have a Skyline Retro 140. It is easy to tow. If it weren't blocking my view in the review mirror, i wouldn't even know it was there. I have gone as far as 70 on south stretches of straight highway with no problems. I have never- NOT even once- experienced any sway.
Now go back a year. I had a pop-up before. It was a small one. It would sway anytime I hit 60mph, a semi passed me, or the road for bumpy.

RE: Conumdrum

I just went through this w when my dad died. He had a house filed with a lifetime of stuff. My sister and I took what we wanted, which was just a few keepsakes. Then I sent an email to all of my co-workers inviting them to come and take it. Only two rules: 1) no saying, "I'll come back later to get this." And 2) I was not lifting or carrying anything. There were a few things left that made one small truck load to Goodwill.
For me, it was about getting it done- NOT making money.
