RE: Looking for front mounted VersaHaul pictures

The wheel stop on the versahauler has two positions which helps to center the bike. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/jhrodd/IMG_0670.jpg

RE: Flatbed Storage Box/Doors?

I picked up 4 doors on Ebay and closed in the base with Filon over 1/2" plywood. I wouldn't bother with marine ply unless you're planning on taking it in the water. Just use a good solid core. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/jhrodd/camper.jpg

RE: Our custom true flatbed truck camper build thread

It seems to me that your over thinking the roof. If you have no penetrations you won't have much reason to walk on it and even so there's no reason you can't walk on TPO or EPDM. Our trailers have a translucent fiberglass cloth on the roof and we can walk on it. These trailers do a lot of twisting and shaking in their 100K miles/year and I've never had a roof leak. I wouldn't put AL on the roof. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/jhrodd/image_zps13c7f942.jpg width=640 Max. Photo width=640

RE: Lance 1191 on a flatbed...opinions? good or bad?

Im not so sure this combo is going to all that safe . They were designed for local delivery maneuverability use not over the road use . They do not track well with a load on interstates and ride very hard with the seats directly over the front axle , air or no air ride. Look at them traveling on highways , you can see they do not track well . Ask the guys that drive them for a living . You'll not find too many that will say, 'its a great ride on the highway' . You would have to install that (5500#-6000# already tall basement, slideout) model 1191 in order to clear the cab, making this tall combo a nightmare in crosswinds . I'm no expert but I do have about 3 million miles of professional driving experience in conventional, cabover, and cab forward trucks. There is nothing magical about a cabover that would make it ride badly or track poorly. Assuming there are no alignment deficiencies these conditions are affected somewhat by steering design (caster mostly) and suspension design. Your seating position relative to the front axle just doesn't have much effect on comfort. I drove my '82 Freightliner cabover for 650,000 miles then stepped up to a Peterbilt conventional and the ride was not noticeably improved. As far as tracking, my Mitsubishi Fuso handles just as well as my Freightliner Cascadia and tolerates crosswinds better than my tractor trailer which weighs 45,000 lbs empty. We took the Fuso through the painted desert a couple of years ago in a 50-60 mph crosswind (dust storm) and I was amazed at how well it handled. I had to check that the camper windows were closed tight and couldn't get the windward drivers door open to get out. Last year I was thinking about going to a 4wd crew cab and took my wife along on a test drive of the Dodge, ford, and Chevy. She was severely underwhelmed and professed to like the Fuso best. My Fuso is 11'6" high which is not out of line with many of the pickup camper combos. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/jhrodd/COEcamper.jpg

RE: Where to go TC camping in Washington?

I second the Whidbey Island suggestion. We take the Camper there every year for New Years Eve. Fort Ebey State Park is open year round. We often camp free on the beach in front of Nickel Brothers Boat Yard on Holmes Harbor or at the Marina in Langley. Nickel Brothers has a sign on the beach that says : Welcome, Private beach : don't take anything, don't leave anything. I love that.

RE: Vancouver to Whitehorse

That's a fabulous drive, the road is decent and there are ample fuel stop/cafes. We drove up to Skagway in two days stopping for the night in Whitehorse. Then took the AK Ferry back to Bellingham. I had to deliver a Volvo truck tractor to Juneau, a couple bought it from me to pull their fifth wheel. Alaska Ferry leaving Juneau http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/jhrodd/pastedGraphic1.jpg

RE: What's your actual truck weight without camper?

jroddick - glad to see your rig is still working out great for you. I really like your setup. Thank you. 45,000 miles, zero problems. OK, one problem. We go out to Whidbey Island every year on New Years Eve and usually camp on a private beach owned by a boatyard with a very civilized sign that says "Welcome, private beach : don't take anything, don't leave anything" Last year our furnace quit abruptly while we were taking on supplies at the local grocery so we had to stay at the State Park with a hookup to run our electric space heater temps were in the 20's the furnace was eventually an easy fix but not what you want to do in a parking lot on New Years eve.

RE: What's your actual truck weight without camper?

GVW is 14,050 and it gets about 12-14 MPG with the Camper. I towed a trailer and 8 scooters on a 3000 mile trip and still got 11 MPG. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/jhrodd/BELLINGHAM027a.jpg

RE: Best truck camper for winter camping

SO when it is around 55 I normally just run the furnace and keep it about 65 . Seriously? I would have the AC on if it was 65. I couldn't sleep if it was over 55. When Mary and I were trucking we had a Webasto heater in the sleeper but we never ran it unless it was going to get real cold overnight. I can remember getting up in the morning with just one blanket and finding out it was 12 or 13 degrees out. Before the Webasto we had serious sleeping bags. We only idled the engine if it was well below zero since the cold starts were hard on the motor.

RE: How tall of a carport?

My carport is 12'10" and with open ceiling joists I can just about stand on the camper roof when it's on the truck. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/jhrodd/94367ba2.png It's 20' wide and fits the camper and the boat. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk103/jhrodd/nose.jpg
