RE: Dodge 6.7 diesel Auto transmission

I really like my 6sp automatic. The exhaust brake is also a great feature. No way would I want the 6sp manual after having my automatic. Same here. I've had the 47RE, NV5600 and now the 68RFE and if they keep on this path.. I'll never go manual again. I have just as much control over the heavy trailers I'm pulling with this new auto as I did with my old manual...

RE: Dodge 6.7 diesel Auto transmission

I have been looking at moving to a 3/4 ton and am considering a used 07/08 dodge with the 6.7 diesel. I have found 2 different trucks both with the 6.7 but one has a 5 speed auto and the other has the 6 speed. WHich is better and why? The ONLY automatic you can get with the 6.7L engine is the 6 speed.

RE: Gathering info to get a Cummins, which Generation Dodge?

I am looking to replace my older 3/4 & 1 ton pickups. I have only been looking at Dodge 1 ton DRW third generation units. My Carriage grosses out at 10,400# by axle rating. That sounds reasonable to me. Should I consider an older Dodge(second generation), a 3/4 ton or a SRW 1 ton? A new unit is not an option at this point. I have read that certain years "the 6 speed is the only way to go" and others the "auto is the only one to consider". I have wanted a Cummins since the 1994s came out. The 5er is a good excuse to upgrade from my old 6.5 Turbo C3500. Our four horse slant trailer and 25' beavertail flat bed "usually" don't overload the Chevy but have on occasion. I know I could have posted this on the Cummins Forum but most of what I have read there is related to aftermarket and hotroding. I may or may not mod it. Not having to mod the unit is a part of why I want a Cummins. Insight/input from present/past owners would be appreciated. Other threads have touched on my questions but I hope to learn from your experiences. TIA If you want some good tech info and opinions from guys who tow lots of weight, try here: http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/index.php

RE: Ford 6.7 diesel is cool, but so is the all new gasser 6.2!

Everyone is focusing on the new Diesel...mostly divided into 2 groups...those that are anxiously waiting with anticipation (me) and the other group praying for Ford to fail at it's first all Ford designed and manufactured F series diesel in 30 years. But not as well known, and certainly as interesting..the also all new from the ground up 6.2 L shows that Ford is not sitting on their hands when it comes to the folks that prefer gasoline either! 400 HP and 400 lb ft torque at a modest 5500 rpm means this will become a real towing beast...and the biggest bonus is better fuel mileage. And finally catching up to the superb truck engines that Chevy and Dodge have had for years! Roush is now in the process of testing for Ford a slightly bored out 6.2...with 700 HP! The new 6.2 will appear in the new Expedition and the new F150 Raptor first, then the F250/350/450 series, and the E250/350/450's as well for the RV industry. Sorry, but comparing a gasser to a diesel just doesn't work, no matter how hard you try. There is NO comparison!

RE: 2008 Dodge DRW Manual Trans

Everyone can say autos have come a long way, they have, but they still have a higher failure rate then a manual because of the rubber seals, and O-Rings they depend on to hold any gear. ...and where have you gotten this information from? Because I have not seen it, and I happen to own a 80k member website dedicated to Dodge Diesel trucks... Let me be specific. Show me proof that the new 68RFE is having a higher failure rate then the manuals. Bet you can't find any data to support that theory.

RE: 2008 Dodge DRW Manual Trans

You cannot compare a 97 Dodge 47RE/RH to the current automatic transmissions available. Even the now discontinued 48RE was a stronger transmission than what they had back then. The current 6 speed autos can take much more abuse. The days of the manual being the only reliable choice are over, and have been over for 7 years now. And this is coming from a guy who loves the 6 speed manual! I agree with this post 100%. I have had three Dodge diesels since 1999. First one was an automatic. Ended up replacing the auto twice in that truck. Second one was a 2004 6 speed. LOVED that truck but had to sell it because of budget issues back in 2006. Third truck is a 2007 6.7L auto and this is by far the best truck I have EVER owned. Like has been said, you cannot compare the old autos to the new. This Is NO comparison... Either way and whatever you choose, I think you'll enjoy the truck :)

RE: 2008 Ram Cummins Regeneration Mode ????

Quick update on my CTD. Since the software was reflashed I haven't had any issues. I've put another 5K on the truck since then and I think my city MPG has improved a little, maybe another 1 or 2 per gallon hovering in the 18.5 MPG range in the suburban area of St. Louis. Excellent, you should have many happy years of service from your truck. Good luck with it :)

RE: cummins diesel in a ford??

What's wrong with a Cummins in a Dodge? Sure seems like a good combination to me. Agreed. My brother is a Ford man through and through. Even after two buybacks in 2004 and 2005. Crazy. I've never had to go through that process except in 1997 when went through it with my Ford. Not saying Ford is bad, it's just that I never had good luck with them except for my 1993 gasser. I miss that truck.

RE: cummins diesel in a ford??

Any truth to the rumor that ford is planning on putting the Cummins diesel in their F250? No..negative. This rumor goes around every single year but it never happens. Cummins and Dodge are in bed together long term.

RE: New Ram heavy duty

It's kind of funny when I see people trying to argue that the Duramax or the PSD is a better engine than the Cummins. It's pretty well accepted all over the diesel community that the Cummins is the leader. Now as for the truck itself, sure, you can argue some of that stuff but the engine arguments are a waste of time and effort.

RE: Dodge 3500 reliability, or issues.

My current Dodge is by far the best performing truck and most trouble free that I have ever owned.. Same here, and there are lots of us happy owners out there. :)

RE: Dodge 2500 need a chip or not?

This post if funny!!Have you ever ran a tuner in your truck or believe in hear-say?I have run 3 hp boxes in my 2004 dodge truck since new,NONE degraded reliability. To each his own,but beware of the NA-SAYERS.If you are looking at putting in diesel fuel additives read the spicer lubricity report.coobie I believe this to be true only if you add power the correct way. I've known a LOT of people who didn't, and paid the price for it, heavily. Don't just throw on a box and call it good. There is a specific process that should be followed. Given your history with power add-ons and no reliability issues, it seems that you've done it the right way.

RE: 2008 Ram Cummins Regeneration Mode ????

Camping Man, it's a lot more simple than it seems really. I've never had to do that, and I've never had any issues with my truck.

RE: Dodge 3500 reliability, or issues.

In terms of in-town driving and the DPF, I also do a lot of city driving and I have never had an issue. However, I keep my exhaust brake on at all times, and every once in a while go hammer down for a minute or so and it's all good.

RE: New Ram heavy duty

linky Most comments liked the "hips" on the dually ,more curvy less tacked on. Looks too much like a Ford to me, but I guess it'll grow on me sooner or later.

RE: Dodge 3500 reliability, or issues.

Thanks every one of you for all the help. I had an old Dodge diesel with the now extinct 5.9 It was a good truck. Not great, but good. I am a little nervous about the new 6.7 and the reg emissions, but think I am just going to bite the bullett and buy one anyways. Thanks again your all a very great group, and I appreciate the wealth of knowledge. I don't think you'll regret it. I've always had good luck with my Dodge trucks. I like them so much, I started my own website in 2001. I had a 95 and a 97 PSD. Now the 7.3L was a good engine but I had problems with both trucks. I changed to Dodge in 1999 and bought a 99 Dodge. A few years later, a 2004 and now a 2007 6.7L. I have not had an issue with any of my Dodge trucks except for a broken input shaft on my 99 after I broke 380hp with it. Probably not the smartest thing for me to do, even with the aftermarket tranny I put in it. It still wasn't enough for the power I was producing at the time.

RE: 2008 Ram Cummins Regeneration Mode ????

Correct, LSD is very bad for the new 6.7L engine. Do not use it!! ULSD only because if not, you will have major emissions component issues.

RE: Dodge 2500 need a chip or not?

What do you think a 2003 Dodge 2500 need a chip or not? There are a lot of things to think about when you add power to these trucks. For instance, putting to much HP through the stock transmission will tear it up. You have to make sure your EGT's are in good shape as well. Like I said, lots of things to think about. Try going here and posting your questions. These guys know their stuff, bigtime... http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev

RE: Good websites for shopping for trucks online

If you're looking specifically for diesel, this is a good place. http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/classifieds/index.php There are also some gassers on there, but not nearly as many as the diesels...
