RE: generator storage while traveling

She secretly wants you to get a new truck.
Seriously, you could get a plastic tote and then secure it to the roof rack. It will be a bear to get it up and down, but if she doesn't want it in any other place.

RE: Chocking strategies with a single xchock

I would just spend the money and get the right equipment for the job. It is a safety device and it's money well spent.

RE: Pulling 5th wheel versus TT

Although I don't have one, I heard the ProRide hitches are close to the stability of a 5th wheel. Those that have one or experience with one can chime in.

RE: If you've got 3 or more kids...

The closest vehicle you ask for is/was the Excursion. It's just slightly short of the 2K lbs. payload.
The last year Ford made them was 2005 as you've indicated. If you're good at wrenching, you could get a used one and fix it up like new.
It's too bad that the automakers caved in to the environmental zealots.

RE: torque wrench

I picked mine up at Home Depot. Husky brand 1/2" drive clicker style for about $80. It's got a lifetime warranty. It started to fail on me after 6 years so I exchanged it at HD for a new one free.

RE: New to me v10 any tips?

I would do the diff fluid as well, unless you're going to regear to 4.30 soon.
One maintenance item that is usually overlooked is cleaning the MAF sensor. Make sure to reset the computer by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 30 min. Change the air filter if it looks dirty.

RE: California emmisions

Just keep in mind it's a CA emissions vehicle if you're buying emission related parts if you are fixing your car when the check engine light comes on. They sometimes have parts specifically for CA emission vehicle separately.

RE: Opinions on Generators/Boondocking

I have the Champion 3500/4000 and I can tell you if you want to know what the sound is like, run a lawn mower next to the trailer.
Inside with the AC running, you'll hear a little depending on how insulated your trailer is.
I also have the Champion 2000 inverter from Costco for about $500. It's much quieter, but it will not run your AC. Double it with a parallel kit and it can. The kit does come with the RV 30A outlet.

RE: RV Loan Rate under 4%

But you took away a tax deduction by doing so...
That is true, but if I stay the course, I would pay about $800 in interest. I may get back $300, so I would pay a net of $500. And that is only the first year. This repeats every year for the next 9 years, granted it is reduced every year until it's paid off. I bit the bullet and just paid the $200 once.
One benefit now is there is no lien on the trailer. I own it with the title in hand. The credit card debt is not a secured loan. God forbids if we lose our jobs and can't pay the mortgage on the house, I've accepted that we could lose the house to foreclosure, but they can not take away my "house to go" if I default on my credit card bill.
To the OP, that is a great rate at 4% for 12 years with a $19K loan. Most require $50k minimum.

RE: RV Loan Rate under 4%

When we bought ours in 2009, we went through Bank of America 7.75% 12 year term. Financed about $18K.
Fast forward to Sept. of 2012, paid it down to a little over $10K in 3 years. Got a balance transfer offer from Chase credit card no interest for 1 year, but has a 2% balance transfer fee. Made the transfer and tacked on extra $200 or so to the balance. Will pay it all off before interest start to accrue.
This credit card is not used for purchases. I use a different one which I pay off in full every month so I don't pay interest on the new purchases.
I decided to do this when I realized how much interest I was paying every year. Sure, paying minimum every month is nice, but when you add up the interest, it was a real eye opener for me.

RE: Front mounted hitch

I have it on mine and it works great to push my trailer into a tight spot on the side of the house. It is only rated for 500 lbs. load, but I'm pushing it rather than pulling so there is no issues. Also use it for a bike rack.

RE: Towing with Excursion

Once you make the modifcations, it tows great! Mine came with 4.30 gears from the factory. I added a rear sway bar and it improved the handling. That's all I did to it and tows my 7000 lb trailer great.
The Excursion never got the 3V V10 in '05.

RE: Generators

I have both Champion generators (3500/4000 watts and the cube invertor 1500/2000 watts).
The 3500 one is pretty loud. I am considering getting another invertor one and a parallel kit to run the AC.

RE: Adding second A/C to travel trailer - which one?

The 13.5K BTU vs 15K BTU debate is similar to the 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck debate. If the price difference was only $100, I would go with the larger one.
I would rather have more truck than I need than have not enough when I need it.

RE: Very sharp or U turns with trailer

You can get a front hitch receiver like I have and if you find yourself in a tight situation, you can unhitch, turn the truck around, and hitch the front end and push the trailer out until it is easier for you to go the other way.

RE: new to everything has questions

One thing I noticed that wasn't mentioned was the GCVWR (Gross COMBINED Vehicle Weight Rating) of the TV.
My 4Runner had a tow rating of 5K lbs. max., but the GCVWR was 8800 lbs. Weight of the TV and all passengers, cargo, etc. came in about 4500 lbs. That leaves only about 4300 lbs. my trailer could weigh...not the full 5K lbs.
Just something to consider not to just look at the max tow rating of the vehicle.
Sorry to add to the confusion, but it is important to know. It's kind of like doing your taxes how you use the 1040 but also need to do the AMT.

RE: Excursion/Expedition

Thanks everyone, The hunt is now on, any advice on buying cars that are 500+ miles away?
If you must fly to check it out/buying it, I would get a round trip ticket where you can cancel the return trip and use it on a later date like Southwest.
If the deal doesn't go through, you fly back. If it does, you cancel the flight and drive back.

I believe the wheelbase on the Excursion is 137".
The Expedition is on a half ton platform, while the Excursion is on a 3/4 ton platform.
