RE: tennis ball trailer hitchup setup

Did the hitch ball setup and did not like it much. I use the CIPA 11955 FastHitch Mirror. Put placement lines on inside of tailgate for consistency.

RE: Travel Trailer Tires

If in doubt swap those tires out. ST tires are notorious for coming apart and doing a lot of damage to the trailer. 3-4 years is getting close to end of life for most ST tires with a few exceptions. I just swapped mine out and the old ones still looked good. Prior experience with a blow out on my boat trailer and the subsequent minor damage made me more cautious. Last thing I want is my Flagstaff damaged and having to file an insurance claim due to a tire blow out.

RE: Which Ford Diesal Motor Should I stay away from.

None,as much as I love Ford the issues too are costly. Being in emergency services our vehicles get abused and weakness soon show up. 6.0(problems), 6.4(problems) switched to Dodge Ram, been very reliable. Not the fastest but stays in service. My 6.0 diesel was a good one of the bunch and I have did preventative upgrades.

RE: $ 125.00 to replace a two dollar fuse

I agree with the OP, the cost was excessive considering that it was just a fuse. In my opinion we have become accustomed to being ripped off and business get away with it. Emergency or not the cost was excessive and a truely good bussiness with morals would be ashamed to take advatage of the customer in that manner. I understand they have bills to pay also, so if this was ok then where does it stop. If they up the labor rate to 200 per hour then what? Still justified in charging 200+ for a 10 min fuse replacement. We have become a no exception to the rules society, to bad so sad, rules are rules. Fairness has gone out the window. Independent mechanics rely on good customer service to keep business coming in. They have to look their customer in the eye, and are hard pressed play the same game and get away with it.

RE: BACKING up may end my marriage!

My wife only helps at the campground due to unfamiliar obstacles and possible children running around. When we arrive home I open the gate, wife and teens go into the house to "open up" and I back the trailer around a narrow "L" to it's final resting place. As others have said, he just needs practice or maybe you could be the better "backer upper", some women are.

RE: Idling diesels all night

Possibly for other electronics and noise to sleep. Some people prefer external noise that blocks out all other sounds or silence. I have worked with people that can not sleep well unless they have a loud fan etc running in the background. That engine running probably puts the trucker into perfect rest.

Some of it is ego, not willing to show that he is ignorant of a few things. Same people in the work place.

RE: Washing the 5er without damaging decals

Murphy's Oil soap. All natural, inexpensive, safe for the whole trailer including the roof. Use full strength to remove black streaks. I use it on my trailer and boat. Boat is 11 years old and decals still look practically new. After washing I use a garden pump sprayer to mist Aerospace 303 protectant on all rooftop accessories and then all sides of trailer, including windows, awning and tires. Prior to leaving: light wash, rinse, squeegee and hit the road.

RE: Traveling to San Antonio

October would be the best for weather. Visit Lost Maples State Park for views of fall color and hiking, very popular in the fall. Eat at http://www.gristmillrestaurant.com/ There are many dining options in the surrounding area but they are not all in Metro San Antonio. Nearby towns offer excellent options from German, Polish, Mexican, Southern cooking etc.

RE: 1/3 of tire strength gone after 3 years

On one hand they state how well ST tires are built in comparison to "LT" or "P" tires but yet should be replaced after 3 years. The above posted child car seat analogy is superb, same belt material but not the same lifespan? Have to thank our legal system for quite a bit of it.

RE: 1/3 of tire strength gone after 3 years

So information based on data taken from the weakest brands of tires, sells tires. I say that based on some of what you guys are posting. Why put a Maxxis tire display in the showroom and advertise how long they last. They want more frequent sales. An impulse purchase of tires they have in stock works to their favor.

1/3 of tire strength gone after 3 years

http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTrailerTireFacts.dos I was reading above info and had never came across the statement of ST tires loosing 1/3 of their strength after three years. If indeed this is true then after three years I am at max capacity or overweight. Question, is this marketing or factual? If factual could this explain blowouts on 3+ year old tires? Specifically standard load range that are put on from the factory or when replaced with same load range.

RE: Towmax tires- what would you do?

If you can afford it and that "gut" feeling is telling you to replace them, do it and have no regrets. My neighbor has an 09 Montana and his tires were 3 1/2 years old. Informed me about a month ago that he blew a tire and it did quit a bit of damage to his fifthwheel. It was only a 3 hour trip and he made it about 2 hours before it blew. I just orded tires for my boat trailer and already looking toward replacement on our travel trailer in about a year. Upgrading to the next load size on both.

RE: Just got new rig setup...

Don't let a few naysayers stop you from sharing. There is a towing revolution occurring that is bringing lighter more capable tow vehicles as well as trailers. Bigger more powerful trucks are being made as well on the other end of the spectrum. I caught some grief years ago when responding positively about towing with a 97 Dodge Grand Caravan, I had used ours to tow a 21ft Aerolite travel trailer. I had properly upgraded it to tow including Gabriel air shocks. Still drive it today as our grocery getter. It took me posting pics to hush the naysayers. Your posting will encourage others who with proper research and equipment upgrades may also enjoy this towing revolution, so keep on flexing that bicep and see ya down the road.

RE: Need help buying a nw RV travel trailer

My advice from experience is to make sure you consider yourself and DW heavily when looking at options. People tend to focus more on the comforts of the kids and not enough on the adults. Most kids could care less where they eat, sleep, bath or pee. They just want fun. So strongly consider bathroom amenities like a regular size shower and not a cramped shower/tub combo (I hated that combo unit, now it feels like home). Also the amount of privacy for you and the wife. We love the kids but a few minutes of solitude is heaven. Lastly how comfortable will the adults be on a bad weather day, spending hours inside the trailer. Do you have a place to sit and relax while watching movies or reading etc. There are a lot of floor plans out there so keep your options wide open. Depending on the age of your kids a consideration may also be what do you and the wife want as the kids grow up and begin spending time in other areas. As someone else recommended the RV shows are great, that is how we found our current trailer, one look and we knew it was for us. Just my 2 cents.
