RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

I use my DRW truck as a daily driver. For me, its just like driving any other vehicle. Probably the only drawback that I can think of is certain parking situations. For example, when I park at the mall or other parking lots, I tend to park away from others so I can utilize two front to back spaces. But then I always park further away than most even if I have my personal car since I dont like those nasty door dings from others who dont care, so Im used to the extra walk.

RE: What Would You Do?

My first Chevy Duramax worked great until I took it in for a manufacturer recall regarding reprogramming something in the computer. After the dealer had it, my "check engine" light would go off and she'd go into limp mode. First time was in NYC pulling a car trailer. Try maneuvering around Harlem in limp mode to get back to the nearest dealer in NJ. They said it was fixed (some sensor thing). Several months later the same thing happened (this time closer to home). My local dealer had it for a week. They said it was fixed, but I never trusted the truck after that. I got rid of it. Could not take the chance of having the thing break down with the TC on thousands of miles from home. My next Chevy Duramax has been great.
Reliability is the most important issue with any vehicle. If you can swing it Id dump the thing. I wouldnt turn my back on Ford, but Id look at all of them and buy what I like the most.

RE: My first trip report

My first Duramax was also a 2008. I had the "check engine" light come on and she went into limp mode on the George Washington bridge in NYC. I was delayed a day while hanging out at a NJ Chevy dealership waiting for a part to come in. Three months later the same thing happened. I know whats it like when that limp mode kicks in. After the second time I knew I would never trust that truck.

RE: anyone using Firestone Transforce HT tires ?

I used them on my work van for years. No problems, but I didnt think that they wore that well. I never used them for hauling a TC. I started using Generals and Ive had good luck with them. The OEM set that I got with the dually truck gave me 50K miles so I stuck with the same brand.

RE: Lance truck campers TPO Nose construction

A new and improved front nose cap would not be a deal breaker for me. You still have the seams, marker light holes, and so far I have never sustained any flying damage to that area like birds or rocks. And with my luck if I bought a Lance Id probably end up getting the nose cap that he just got done beating with the baseball bat.

RE: Camper jack would not stop

I did search on this but could not find anything.
Have a 2013 AF 990 bought new in January. While trying to load the camper to come home late this morning I the pushed the 2 front lift buttons to raise front of camper. When I released the buttons the front left jack would not stop, CAMPER JUST KEPT GOING UP! TALK ABOUT PANIC! I have a very good mechanical aptitude but all I could think of is to keep pushing buttons but nothing seemed to stop the jack from raising. Just as camper was getting way out of shape I thought about the plug on each jack, so I unplugged that jack from the camper which did stop it.
Has anyone had this happen? I will call dealer in morning to see what they have to say but I wanted to post this so everyone will be aware of what can happen. If I had heard of this happening I would have known what do do immediately. It was a scary experience. Some times I have my wife lift camper and get it ready to load while I'm doing other things. If she would have been doing this and I was not around, I do not know what the outcome would have been, but it would not have been good
Tha dealer will most likely be clueless. Call Rieco Titan direct. They will take care of you.

RE: Truck choice for TC

3500........ 1.The D/A is a great combo. 2.Better beefier truck to haul a bigger range of TCs. 3.You save $10K 4. The Duramax is only now starting to get broken in.

RE: BaseBoard Heater Install completed

The instructions are clear on clearances above and around the heater. Something like 6" I believe to drapes, but not too restrictive.
Here's a link to the installation instructions;
http://www.shopfnc.com/pdffiles/dimplexlcinstr.pdf
And here's a link to the product description;
http://www.shopfnc.com/electrolpc.htm
I did review the installation instructions and saw the 6" drape clearance which makes good sense. I also ran the heater and let it run for about 15 minutes before mounting it to the wall. The back side of the heater gets extremely hot, too hot to even touch and hot enough to burn your skin. That concerned me so I mounted mine on a 3/8" thick backer board using heat reflective tape to direct the heat back into the heater and not out towards the rear wall. Dont think I would want the heater mounted directly against the paneling or any wall for that matter. I feel comfortable how mine has been installed, even if the owners guide says you can make a direct mount onto any wall.

RE: BaseBoard Heater Install completed

I posted a recommendation on the other thread and I guess I should of posted here. Be careful with any overhanging area above the heat vents. These put off very high heat, straight up, and anything overhanging will get very hot. I installed an aluminum deflector with heat reflective tape to direct the heat out and away from the carpeted overhang in my TC.
The reviews on these heaters have alot of owners complaining how hot the unit gets and how hot things can get that are too close to the top output vents.

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Just returned from two weeks camping at Oregon's coastal State Parks. They are so very nice and in April they are not crowded. Came home to find the Baseboard Heater I ordered (Dimplex Linear Proportional Convector Heater) had arrived. Sure wish it had arrived before we departed. Oh well..anxious so got right to installing it. It is a good looking 750 watt 120 volt AC heater with a built in Electronic Thermostat. I wired it into the Air Conditioner Breaker as both will never be used at the same time. Since so many state parks and other locations have Electric Hookups this should be really nice. Even our Honda EU2000 could run it if desired.
Credit goes to "skipro3" for the idea!!!

Make sure you check the overhang above the heater. Any area over those outlet vents will get very hot. I fabricated an aluminum shield lined with heat reflective tape to install above mine. The heat is now deflected out and away from the carpeted overhang that I had to contend with. Best way to check is to just run the heater for 15-20 minutes and check the area above by touching it.

RE: Gone to the Dark Side :-)

That is one big RV. We used a 40' motorhome and towed a toad for 10 years. After having the TC I just dont miss those days. But like you, we needed that extra room at the time so you make due with what you have to have. Im just glad that we now have the flexibilty and convenience of something smaller. Enjoy your new RV. We sure do love our AF too.

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Busy day today...washed camper, both motorcycles, and both trucks (Silverado for camper and Honda Ridgeline for daily drive). Had everything out for washing...so why not!
Want to stay ahead of the power curve since the month will fly by and then it's off to Alaska :-)
You will have a great time in Alaska. Just forget about trying to keep your truck clean up there.

RE: 1150 vs. 990

My 09 Chevy dually handles my 1140 very well. I did a few mods to my suspension but the truck is rock solid. I do use a 42" hitch extension when towing my trailer. The difference in weight between the 990 and 1150 is about 300 lbs. Both of them will be in the 5000 lb range loaded and wet. Definitely the 1150 will offer you more room and probably a dry bath if you prefer that over a 990 wet bath. Both are great TCs and the 990 is still Northwoods most popular model. My guess is that the difference in total length of either hitch extension will be about 12-15", depending which TC you go with. As far as length of overhang, you should not know any difference once you get used to either.

RE: Front rack

Just thought I would let people know if you plan on getting the TSC platform for a mounting a toolbox on the front that I bought one the other day and took it back today. I received my Curt hitch and installed it this morning. Then I put the TSC platform on it and guess what, the stinger part is not long enough. When I it put into the location to put the pin in the back brace that you mount the toolbox on is 3.5" recessed behind my front bumper. No way to mount the toolbox on it. Also the ad on the TSC says that it is 20" X 36" is wrong. It is actually 25" wide x 26" long including the stringer portion with 20" between the mounting rails, way smaller than I thought it was going to be. With my tool box mounted on it I would have had over 15" hanging off each side. To much non supported area for me. If it had been the 36" then I would only have had 10" on each side that I could live with.
So again it is a buyer beware, TSC did not question the return it just another trip that I made for nothing.
So I'm back to my Curt rack for my toolbox, at least now that toolbox does not bounce up and down like before and that makes me happy.
Butch50
Sorry I didnt mention this problem earlier. I could of saved you a trip (or two). I had looked at those box mounts at TSC and I knew there was a reason why I did not buy one, but for the life of me I could not remember why....call it old age or whatever. After I read your reason why it didn't work for you then I remembered why it didnt work for me. I even considered trying to make an extension but than gave up on thas idea and went with the aluminum cargo carrier.
