RE: Batteries One or Two

I rarely boon dock anymore but I have suffered through snow storms, landslides/road closure, lighting storms etc which forced me to rely on batteries. In my case an extra type 24 battery cost me about $60 - cheap insurance.

RE: Batteries

Take your batteries down to nearest auto parts/tire store and have them checked out (it's free). Genset not starting maybe a simple as corroded ground wires (check both generator and coach battery grounds).

RE: Fulltiming with pets?

I don't think either you or the dogs are going to appreciate living together in a camper full time - too small.

RE: Class C Generator

I wouldn't have a problem with the hours so long as the std maintenance has been performed. I don't dry camp much anymore but still exercise my Onan an hour per month under load which is recommended by many.

RE: Air Conditioner Issues

I would carefully look at the installation- I would bet that air is recirculating inside the ceiling assembly, causing the short cycle.
That was my problem and I suspect the prime suspect in many "short cycle" issues - maybe a simple as a piece of sheet metal or duct tape moving out of position.

RE: battery problems

If your connected to shore power - that's the way it's suppose to work as your PD9245 connects directly to your DC power distribution panel. You chassis battery isn't suppose to have any impact on your coach unless your battery isolator isn't working properly.

RE: Chassis Battery Not Charging On Shore Power/Generator

Have you tested the condition of your coach batteries and whether your converter is working properly? Bird works by monitoring the batteries and won't open solenoid when connected to shore power if your coach batteries don't have proper charge.

RE: Trip from Los Angeles to Coure D Alene, ID

If you have some time then I would head north - spend some time seeing the Oregon Coast which has some of the best State Parks in the country - they head east through Portland onto Idaho.

RE: 12 Volt Outlets

I have plug in DC meter which monitors battery/converter - also plug in an 12 volt electric fan on occasion.

RE: Towing with a class c?

Just make sure your Class C has the weight capacity - I have a 29' E350 which is pretty much maxed out coming off the dealer lot.

RE: Converter not charging, I don't think

Ok, I found the PDF file for the converter. I followed the troubleshooting. Disconnect the battery cables from the battery.
Plug in Shore power and check voltage at the battery cables.
This turned out to be about 3v dc. So the converter is shot.
I will buy a new one. Just the guts though. Thanks for all the input.
saronabound
There is usually a fuse/circuit breaker between the battery and converter (located near the battery) - before buying new converter make sure the problem isn't a few dollar breaker than needs replacing or resetting. In my rig it's an auto reset circuit breaker.

RE: Water Leak

I took the camper to the repair guy today. As we looked at the roof there are definetly a couple of spots around the bathroom vent. Also the front and back caps look suspect. He is going to rework the vent and also redo the caps at both ends. Sounds like a lot of work but he says that this is the best fix going into the future.
Good luck - hope after he "fixes" the leak you don't have a leak. Finding the actual source of leaks is often a hit and miss proposition which is why spending money on a pressure test before spending money on "fixes" is often recommended.

RE: Trouble getting New battery SG up

Might be your hydrometer - my experience has been that the readily available inexpensive ones aren't very good are measuring incremental changes.

RE: Water Leak

Spend $100 on a pressure test - that will tell you exactly where your leaks are and give you a basis for determining how hard and "how much" to fix the leak. Don't forget about the delam issue which can be expensive to fix and can get worse if left untreated. Depending on value of rig combo of "new roof" and delam fix may not make economic sense.

RE: Help with converter and battery charging...

If you boondock often then head down to Costco and buy a couple of sixes - won't break the bank and makes a World of difference. If it were me I would upgrade batteries first - then upgrade converter (many prefer Progressive Dynamics which you can manually put into boost mode).

RE: Maintaining Battery Life

Depends of what kind of converter you have and how long your going to store. A modern "smart converter" like a Progressive Dynamics will adjust voltage to mitigate evaporation - if you have a smart converter I would top off the batteries, plug in, and forget.

RE: dewinterize question

For what it's worth.
Your new so your first "de-winterize" experience should be done at home rather than at the campground (better to be home if you mess something up). I also recommend that you take the time to sanitize your water system as part of the "de-winterizing" process. Fill your tank with water/bleach as other have recommended - allow the bleachy water to flow through the water system - let it sit overnight - then flush out all the water - fill the tank again without bleach and flush lines until no bleach smell.

RE: New converter or portable charger?

Before you select PD9245 vs PD9260 - take a look at your wiring/fuse setup - I am no electrical guru but I question whether moving up to 60 amp converter will provide any meaningful benefit without upgrading the wiring.

RE: New converter or portable charger?

I would go with the PD9245 - look again on Amazon because you should be able to find one delivered for about $120 - sometimes less. Yeah you could survive without a converter but it's considered a std feature on rigs and non functioning converter might make selling rig in the future difficult.
