RE: Need a camp ground recommendation for Big Sur

We used to go to Big Sur Campground and Cabins every year, until we bought an RV that was too long for the park. They only have W/E but it's a nice campground. The closest RV park that I know of with FHU is in Carmel, Carmel by the River RV Park, never stayed there though.

RE: California Campground Ideas Requested - Lake/River/Beach

We enjoy Gualala River Redwood Park. It's one of our favorite campgrounds. We go every 4th of July and get a river view site. They only have W/E and the hook-ups aren't always on the correct side of the rig. The site we reserve has this issue so we bring an extension cord for the electric and extensions for the hose. The facilities are old but well kept and the campground is nestled among redwoods. (If you're interested call for reservations, don't use the online reservation system.) We also like Seacliff SB, but you can save that for another trip. We've gone to Lake Tahoe and stayed at Zephyr Cove RV Park. You can't really see the lake unless you're site is near the road, but then you get road noise. It's better to be higher up in the park and walk down to the beach. (If you have pets they don't allow dogs on the beach in most places in Tahoe.) The facilities were immaculate when we were there and they have FHU's. The sites are narrow, paved and tiered up the hillside. You can't request a specific site.

RE: Santa Cruz, California in the late Fall

My choice would be New Brighton state beach in Capitola, a few miles south of Santa Cruz. X2 Also, Seacliff SB in Aptos. (This is where the stone ship is located.) NEW Brighton and Seacliff are a few miles apart. I believe you have to go to New Brighton to dump. No dump station at Seacliff.

RE: Best park in Sonoma or Napa Valley

I don't know if I'd call any of the RV parks in the Napa/Sonoma area "top notch." We've stayed at Petaluma KOA many times and enjoyed it. It's always been clean, well kept and the staff are very nice. I wouldn't call the sites big, especially the pull-thrus, but I think it's a great place to stay. If you choose to stay there and don't have kids ask that you not be placed near the playground. There's an area where a lot of the full-timers stay, rows B, C, D, E and F. The sites are among a grove of trees and are completely shaded, which is nice in the summer. (I've never noticed families with kids in this area, so it's probably preferable if you don't have them.) Site Map We've driven by Napa Expo as my in-laws live in Napa, but have never stayed there, our preference is the Petaluma KOA.

RE: Suggestion on RV park, Elko, Nv

We've stayed at Iron Horse and Double Dice. We prefer Iron Horse by far.

RE: Yosemite Reservations

I'm so happy to hear this! You really need to be diligent if you don't get a spot on reservation day. It does pay off! Congratulations!

RE: Yosemite...frazil ice ? ? ?

We just got back from Yosemite on Sunday, it was WAY too warm, mid 70's during the day, no freezing temps at night.

RE: Advice for keeping warm in Yosemite campground

Thanks all :-) the reason why I am a asking is because we are bringing our babygirl 9 months old. It is normal here in Denmark that babies sleep outside during winter but I just need to make sure i fully understand the possibilities of the RV :-) There's no way to know how long your batteries will last until you pick up the RV and test them. I see your challenge, since babies are always kicking off their blankets. If you can't run your furnace throughout the night I would probably be waking up hourly to check on the baby to make sure she's warm enough. If I remember correctly the generator hours are from 8 am to dusk in spring and fall. We run the generator in the morning to recharge the batteries, then before dusk to make sure they have a full charge for bed time. It's never been a problem. (We go to Yosemite once a year, twice if we're lucky.) Yosemite Guide

RE: Yosemite

Sorry misread your original post. I've read on this forum to stay away from Indian Flat RV Park and I've also heard that the sites at the Yosemite West/Mariposa KOA are small but that the park is very nice and well kept. We've never stayed at either, we come in on HWY 120, so I can't give you a personal recommendation. You might want to check out RV Park Reviews. Also, when you're leaving will dictate whether or not you need reservations. If it's summer I would make reservations now, if you're leaving in the near future I wouldn't think you'd need to make a reservation, but I would make a reservation anyway. Also, there's a length limit on HWY 140 right before you get to the gate. Good to know if you're going into the park before you settle into an RV Park. From the NPS website... El Portal Road (Highway 140) Maximum vehicle length: 45 feet for single vehicle, 60 feet for combination vehicle, 35 feet for towed vehicle from hitch to rear bumper Height restrictions: 12 feet 10 inches Seasons: Open all year (chains may be required in winter).

RE: Grand Teton National Park- Park Recommendations

Colter Bay RV Campground in Grand Teton National Park is excellent. You should really make reservations right now. Have a great trip. x2

RE: How hard is it to book campsite in Yosemite?

We prefer North and Lower Pines Campgrounds. You'll have more sites to choose from because of the length of your RV. Also, you're more likely to get a site after the kids are back in school. The advice about being on your computer ready to go is the best advice anyone can give. Know the site(s) you want to try for. The Yosemite NP website has a page for each campground in the valley with the sites listed by site length. Great resource to start from. I'm on my phone and am not sure how to paste a link with it, otherwise I'd copy and paste them for you. Good luck! Think I got it... RE: Yosemite in April 2014 (Should have read March)

We were in Yosemite March of 2012 as well, for 5 nights. It snowed 3 of the 5 nights we were there. It was a great trip! The kids had a blast! on edit: We didn't need chains and we were in site 68.

RE: Am I Just Naive

TMichelle, have you seen this website, Families On The Road? I found it a few of years ago when we were considering full-timing with our children and it has grown leaps and bounds since then. I think you will find that it is not uncommon for families homeschooling to go out full-time. We would be if I wasn't taking care of my 87 year old father. Happy camping!

RE: Yosemite via CA 41 w/29ft. travel trailer??

I can't answer your question about HWY 41 but as far as the pines campgrounds the maximum trailer length for Lower and North Pines is 35' and for Upper Pines is 24'. They consider maneuverability when establishing these lengths. We have taken our FW, which is longer than 24' into Upper Pines, but not before checking out the site and roads. RE: Yosemite Campground

Yosemite Pines, located near Groveland, is a decent RV Park. If I recall correctly it takes about an hour to get to the valley from there. We stay at Yosemite Pines when we don't have reservations inside the park. The sites are small but the facilities are kept up. The only thing that bothers me are the dirt roads. It can get dusty if people drive through too fast. Also, it takes us between 45 minutes to an hour to get to the valley floor depending on how much time we have to spend at the gate. Something to think about, the later you get into the park the harder it will be to find day use parking, especially in June.

RE: Where to RV on the Central/Southern California Coast?

We like Big Sur Campground and Cabins and have heard a lot of great things about Kirk Creek Campground, both on HWY 1.

RE: Looking For A Yosemite Plan B Help

There is a campground reservation desk at the back of the Curry Village parking lot (it backs to Southside Drive) that opens at 7am. If you can get there early you can put your name on a waiting list, then at around 2 or 3 they start releasing sites for people on the waiting list. There's a line at 7am so you have to get there early, but your trailer is small enough that other than tent campers you'd be more likely to potentially get a site. The number for the campground reservation office is 209-372-8502 if you would like more information. You will most likely need to leave a voice mail, but they've always been good about calling me back within 24 hours when I have called. Also, we always come in on HWY 120 from the SF Bay Area, we stay at Yosemite Pines when we can't get reservations. They have dirt roads, the sites are tight, but the facilities are very clean.
