RE: Gaspe Peninsula

I have been around it twice, both time clock wise. First time in a 36' MH and the second with a 40' MH, both time with a tow.
The 11% to 15% grades are very short, usually less than a quarter mile. They occur when the road leaves the coast line, goes inland over a hill, this drops back to the coast line. I did not find any of them a problem because they were so short.
There is a 17% grade entering Perce. It is about a half mile going up and a half mile going down. The only grade I found to be a problem was the one going down into Perce because it ends as you enter town and you are right at the main drag. You don't really have any time to slow down at the bottom of the grade so have to be going slow in the descent.
Thousands of people travel this road so take the trip and enjoy.

On the road again -Saskatoon to Chicken

Had to lay over in Saskatoon, SK for a week to get a new hot water heater ordered and installed. Got back on the road on 06-04-2013 at 11:15 am.
Took TC 16 west out of Saskatoon and got off at exit 492, TC 16a, in Vegreville, AB for the night. The trip today was 260 miles. Road condition – Good 4-lane all day. There was one railroad crossing, about 10 miles west of Battleford, SK, that was marked as a “Rough” crossing, and it was. Need to slow down to about 10 mph for it. The rest of the road I traveled at 60-62 mph without any problem. It was a very scenic drive over rolling plains with periodic views of small lakes and rivers.
Jun 5 - Continued on TC 16A through Vegreville and merged with TC 16 west. At exit 340 took AN 43 north to Valleyview, AB. In Valleyview went to the campground. The trip today was 280 miles,
Road conditions – TC 16 west. Good 4-lane to Edmonton. Just at the east side of Edmonton there is work on an overpass so traffic is squeezed to one lane, but just for a quarter mile. There are at least a dozen traffic lights on TC 16 going through Edmonton. The street is rough, with a lot of patches, through town but the speed limit is only 70 to 80 kph so it is not a problem.
AB 43 north. Fair to good 4-lane all the way to our stop in Valleyview, 185 miles. Started out with narrow shoulders, lot of uneven patches, and bumpy. Able to drive at 55 mph with no problem, the bumping was just irritating. After 7 miles the hwy went to wide shoulders and smooth surface. Went to 60 mph. At a long railroad trestle the road got really rough for a quarter mile. When you see the trestle start slowing down. There were a few short stretches where I slowed to 55 mph but they were not very long.
There are 5 large rest areas and 2 long pullouts on AB 43 between TC 16 and Valleyview.
Fuel Prices: In Vegreville, AB – Gasoline $1.199 – Diesel $1.109.
In Edmonton, AB – Gasoline $1.259 – Diesel $1.149
In Whitecourt, AB – Gasoline $1.289 – Diesel $1.159.
In Fox Creek, AB – Gasoline $1.319.

RE: Hot water heater

This happens to our heater at least once a year. I unplug all the electrical connections on the front of the heater and blow them out. Then plug them back in and so far the heater has started working. It seems sand can get into the connections and break the circuit.
In fact, the last time was about 3 weeks ago.

RE: We're in Whitehorse,YT

We are stuck in Saskatoon waiting for a hot water heater. Was suppose to have left here yesterday but looks like next Tuesday now.
At least the TOW has opened so we can still make the Chicken Stock Festival in Chicken. I had a leisurely 15 day trip planned for the 1,900 plus miles but will have to make it in 9 days now.
Not complaining - JUST ANOTHER GREAT ADVENTURE.

RE: Some random questions driving through Canada to Alaska

I will only speak to the money issue. WE USE CASH.
We come to Canada every year. Have made 2 trips to Alaska and on the way there now. Have family in Canada so usually spend a month in Canada going and a month returning.
We have BOA as our bank. They charge a 3% international fee on every debit and credit card transaction. However, they have a reciprocal agreement with Scotia Bank that allows us to use our debit/credit card to make cash withdrawals without any fees, including an ATM fee.
Would suggest you check with your bank and see if they have a reciprocal agreement with any bank in Canada if you decide to use cash.
We find it works quite well for us and saves $30.00 on the thousand. We also get the current exchange rate and it has been around parity for the past year.

RE: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......

Arrived in Regina, SK last night. Will get to Saskatoon this afternoon for a 2 week stop to visit family. Will be back on the road the 29th.
If anyone is stopping at Gordon Howe Campground in Saskatoon between 15-28 May stop in for a visit. SUE & LONNIE in big letters on our windshield. Will also have our sign posted "LONNE4801".
The photos of the thaw on Yukon River at Dawson City is looking good. I need to cross on June 12th.
Happy travelling and don't forget to wash your rig every chance you get.

RE: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......

We will be in Cheyenne, WY tomorrow (Sunday) for an overnight stop to visit my brother. Will arrive in Saskatoon, SK on the 16th for a 2 week stop to visit the daughter and family. Then heading for Alaska. Planning on being in Chicken, AK on June 12th for their annual Chicken Stock Festival on the 14th and 15th. Will get there via the TOW if Yukon River will just thaw. If it doesn't then will have to drive up from Tok.

RE: camping along Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia

We did the trail in a 40' motorhome towing a jeep, with no problems. Took us 5 days and we stayed in some nice campgrounds. I might note here, that there would not be campgrounds on the trail if people didn't take their RV's around the trail.
Yes, it is possible to drive it in one day and I believe many do it. However, that is just for the privilege to say "I drove the Cabot Trail". If you really want to see and experience what it has to offer it takes some time.
Can you drive 800 miles in a day? Sure you can, but do you really want to?
Take your rig and take a few days. You will enjoy it.

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

Re wine. In 2007 we had, unopened, 2 bottles of liquor and 5 bottles of wine. The customs officer said that we owed duty on 3 bottles. She said duty on the wine was less than on liquor so she assessed the duty on the 3 extra bottles of wine. Cost $10.82. I would find it hard to believe duty would be any less than that today.
We are always over the allotted amount. We fulltime - we don't stock up, we just keep an assortment like you do at home. With over 20 crossings, this was the only time we have paid duty on excess. At the border I provide them with an itemized list, which includes an estimate of open bottles, plus full bottles. However, we very seldom have any full bottles of liquor, just wine.
We do a lot of wineries.

RE: RVing to Alaska

Re the Milepost. We buy two - keep one intact to read and cut one up for each days travel so we don't have to handle the big book.
Also, strongly recommend the TourSaver coupon book if you plan on taking any tours. Can save you hundreds of dollars.
Leaving Denton, Texas on May 5th.

RE: New 5th wheel driving to Alaska

In 2009 I was setting in the campground in Whitehorse and thinking about how pleasant the trip had been today. We had covered about 200 miles at 40 to 50 mph, enjoyed the scenery, and seen some wildlife. Had plenty of time to stop and take pictures.
Another traveler pulled in next to me and while he was setting up I heard him complaining, rather loudly, about how rotten and rough the road has been today. I asked him where he was coming from and lo and behold it was the same road I had just travelled.
I asked him how fast he had been going and he said abound 70 mph. Well, I just turned around and went back to my rig. Apparently this man had a desire to get to Alaska quickly without seeing what was on the way.
With the exception of the short section around Destruction Bay, which seem to be a problem, and the short distances under annual repairs, I find the road to be quite easy to travel. Have made it in 2005, 2009, and heading out again in May for our 3rd trip. Will miss Destruction Bay because am doing the TOW Hwy both ways.
Just drive the condition of the road and you will be OK.
Note that for most of the road the speed limit is a maximum of 55 mph.

RE: Cape Breton, Cabot Trail

Driving the trail in one day just gives you the right to say “I drove the Cabot Trail”. It doesn’t give you time to do anything. If all you want to do is see scenery then a drive anywhere in Nova Scotia would be sufficient. But if you really want to see and experience what Cape Breton has to offer then it takes more than a one day drive. It seems a shame to go this far and then miss out on some wonderful opportunities by making a jack rabbit run to just making a check on your bucket list.
