RE: Re-packing bearings

AL-KO manual (0.001"-0.010" end play) If any of you researched the bearing specifications -the above range of adjustment would be found. These bearings need some play but at the tight end of the range is not in the "feel" range to most. I shoot for .002 or so but will accept up to 0.010 depending on how the particular axles locking style dictates. I do use a dial indicator too. Easy/peasy with a mag mount. The hub cavity should never be packed full -even with the zerk lube axles offered by Dexter, Al-ko, reliable, QEP/Rockwell, LCI or whomever. Hub cavity needs enough grease to prevent corrosion at a minimum. Beyond that is just a waste.

RE: Generator fuel additives.. yeah or nay

Ethanol free gasoline from the Cenex store plus Stabil long term dosage and SeaFoam at 1/4 dosage. Also try to exercise once a month -if it sits that long. Don't use the generator very much.

RE: GOT MY (LT) MAN CARD.....I did IT!!!!!

Just wondering, what is the actual stamped load rating on the tires? E in that size has several different weights. 3042 @ 80 psi in single tire application like this triple axle trailer. Dual tire(dually) applications are a little lower capacity. These are stout tires very, very similar to Michelin XPS Ribs but a little cheaper and have a better warranty against ozone(environmental) damage than the Michelin.

RE: Any 5th wheel hitch operate exactly like a semi 5th wheel?

Pullrite operates the same as my semi 5th wheels do. Pullrite Superglide and Pullrite Super Fifth have Binkley Style Pin Capture.

RE: Factory brake controller question???

If OP has standard Electric trailer brakes -the performance of the GM ITBC will be superior to a Prodigy or any other inertia based brake controller. 1. Adjust your trailer brakes properly. 3/4 to 1 revolution of the tire/wheel upon a moderate spin. You will hear a distinctive scrapping sound -especially on new/newer brake shoes. 2. If that doesn't help much -time to make sure the mechanical brake operation is proper and wiring system on the trailer is passing the amps/voltage without restriction. These links will help you through the checking process -if you are a DIYer First manual is from Dexter Axle: http://www.dexteraxle.com/i/u/6149609/f/600-8K_Service_Manual_3-13/Electric_Brakes_3-13.pdf Second is from ALKo Axle: http://www.al-kousa.com/pdf/ALKO_2kto7k_OM.pdf

RE: 2012 Raptor with Towmasters = BOOOM!!!

The Maxxis M8008 is probably the best "ST" class tire available....but that does not mean it is the only choice or the overall greatest cost/benefit choice. Especially if you tow at speeds at or above 65 mph in high ambient temperature or want 6 year lifetimes. BTW not an ST tire on any trailer in my fleet that an alternative P or LT tire can be used that handles weight and size needs. This comes from many years of fleet maintenance both wrenching then management.

RE: Double pulling

I do wish that the association of a CDL with an RV would hit the TRASH CAN. Only need a CDL IF your hauling an RV for pay, ie, factory to dealer, and getting paid to do that (as a business.) The need for a CDL and or other special endorsement in regards to an RV is a state/province regulatory issue. You only need to be "specially licensed and or endorsed" if your home state/province has the requirement. Towing multiple trailers as an RV is also a state by state regulatory thing. In my home state, Washington, no special licensing or endorsment standards apply but you can only tow 1 trailer -period even if you possess a CDL A with double/triple trailer endorsement.... In the trucking industry -double trailer is double towing, triple trailers is triple towing. I have seen quad trailer towing before in the desert southwest on road paving projects.

RE: Flipping Shackles

Crude picture but if you are talking about a double set of holes in the spring hangers and equalizer hanger as shown -yes this is a valid way to adust height on a trailer. Nets about 2" typically. http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee2/map_guy/Scan_zps441bebeb.jpg width=600

RE: First trip and need new tires

The G614's weighed a good deal more bare than my factory installed Towmax tires weighed still mounted on the rims! A lot more tire there...Yup, almost twice as much! The thin tires on wheels I could lift onto the studs while kneeling. Now my R250s (about the same weight as G614s) I have to sit on the ground with the wheel in my lap and lift the wheel with my legs Be careful with that, if the jack fails your legs will be pinned, don't ask how I know. I was lucky I was only slightly pinned and someone was able to lift the car enough that I got my leg out with out damage. Use a 2' pry bar and a small 2x4 block to lever the tire up onto the studs -way easier on the body plus your not putting your body in a dangerous place underneath. I keep one with my jack and lug wrench in the trailer. A 2'pry bar is chaeap at Harbor Freight or north of the border at Princess Auto or Canadian Tire

RE: Wheel bearings

The OEM Manuals give excellent advice on service intervals and product specifications. I use the Dexter Axle grease specifications plus the Al-Ko Dropping point -as my experience is that bearing failure is a potential if the grease breaks down from heat....the high dropping point with good consistency prevents high temp breakdown of grease. Currently I use Lucas Red-n-Tacky grease. Complete Dexter Axle Service Manual Here: http://www.dexteraxle.com/i/u/6149609/f/600-8K_Service_Manual_3-13/600-8K_Complete_Service_Manual_3-13.pdf Complete Al-KO Axle Owners Manual Here: http://www.al-ko.us/download/ALKO_2kto7k_OwnerManual.pdf Recommended Wheel Bearing Lubrication Specifications Grease Thickener Type -Lithium Complex Dropping Point -215°C (419°F) Minimum Consistency -NLGI No. 2 Additives -EP, Corrosion & Oxidation Inhibitors Viscosity Index -80 Minimum Grease Use a high temperature, automotive type wheel bearing grease produced by a reputable manufacturer. The soap type should be lithium complex orequivalent. Use NLGI Grade 2 product with a minimum dropping point of 440oF

RE: Need advice on checking and changing brakes

I've just spent the past hour searching the web for how to change brakes on my fifth wheel. I have also searched here. On the web I found a whole lot of buffoons, but not much more. I guess that's my luck, or lack of searching skill. If brakes need changing what should be changed? Just the shoes? Or what else? Is it worth changing just the shoes, or is it better to buy a complete assembly? Where do you buy this stuff? And, in the first place, how do I determine if brakes need changing? The links below will help you understand more about electric trailer brakes. If you do buy replacements and currently have 12x2 size -buy 7K rated assemblies for the most stopping power plus consider self adjusting units. First manual is from Dexter Axle: http://www.dexteraxle.com/i/u/6149609/f/600-8K_Service_Manual_3-13/Electric_Brakes_3-13.pdf Second is from ALKo Axle: http://www.al-kousa.com/pdf/ALKO_2kto7k_OM.pdf Also, electric trailer brakes need to be adjusted much tighter than auto/truck drum brakes due to the way they energize from magnet pull and inertia. If adjusted right they will have a distinctive scrapping sound and only rotate about 3/4 to 1 turn with a moderate spin.

RE: Frig. drain hose ???

Drain hose Plug has multiple functions. Allow condensate to drain without backing -up, prevent hot air infiltration, plus the ancillary function of insect protection.

RE: BlowMax Tires

According to their website specs they are 31.5" in diameter, the same diameter as a ST235/80-16. CAUTION: The specs on Goodyear's web site might be wrong. Every other tire they make in that size is 1" larger in diameter than what is quoted for the G614. Specs are not wrong. The G614 is the same diameter as ST235/80R16 even thought size call out is LT235/85R16

RE: Front to rear Porpoising

My take is that PIN is too light, but not as a % of trailer weight. Truck suspension is not loaded enough to keep overload part of rear spring fully engaged while traveling down the road. Simply put your bouncing off the overload which starts an unwanted harmonic cycle (the ride problem). Have you tried adding 500 # to the truck bed in ballast? A cushioned PIN will help but root cause will not be solved.

RE: Superglide killed my inner child! Slider or Sidewinder?

A few(?) years ago - another owner of a SG hitch had a 45 degree problem -as I recall on exiting a gas station?. He had tried to back up which somehow created the failure. There was an extensive discussion (LOTS of posts) -AND- he took LOTS of pictures! You might try a search of the archives (over a year old) for that thread - or someone else here may undertake that chore -OR- recall the thread title..:@ BTW - another satisfied SG owner.....but also a believer in "Murphy"..:W . ON EDIT: Found my own reference to that thread from 2009. Unfortunately, the pictures have all been deleted as they (probably) were all part of a link to the posters Picasa (or other) account. However, there is *extensive* discussion from posters who viewed the pics. It should be noted - this was a SG from *before* the coated way tubes, which required lubrication with either white lithium grease or Slip Plate. SuperGlide Hitch Failure - Thread from 2009 . And more.....Edit/edit: Apparently "OCDUNE" is no longer active on RV Net. Didn't try DMax forum (link at beginning of his thread). The thread still contains 9 pages of some good "FYI" info & discussion of/by those who viewed the pics..:C ~ The OP and the above linked thread are the *ONLY* "failures" I could find - between Google *AND* going back as far as "Pullrite SuperGlide" (year 2000) in the archives!.:h Yes - I went "generic" just to be sure (15 pages worth). Not uncommon for folks to post their problems -as the OP did- as opposed to post the good stuff (success stories). Not knocking it - just human nature. A great example would be try a search on any forum (or Google) for Goodyear Marathon tires. Yikes!.:R Certainly, SuperGlide owners would *like* to see any further examples of failures. Soooo - let's see 'em! Inquiring minds want to know.:@ ~ Interesting info in that thread you referenced. That original accident was the result of a drag around u-turn, like can be done with a tractor trailer, if my memory is correct, plus the pivot bearing failed in spectacular fashion. All the pics and the original poster disappeared into the wind with out outcome information. The SG will not tolerate a drag around u-turn.

RE: Complete brake replacement Weekend Warrior Help Please

Heat cracking is normal to some extent on trailer brakes shoes. Bet the wiring gauge is limiting the actual stopping potential of the installed brakes. That long of traielr needs pretty heavy wire gauge to allow the amps/volts to actually get to the magnets. OEm's cut corners on brake wiring to save a few $$. If you install new loaded assemblies -get 7K rated 12x2 self adjusting Dexter. Eastern Marine or etrailer.com online usually have decent prices. Rights and lefts are different... All late model 5.2K, 6K & 7K 12x2 brakes interchange. Al-Ko Axle Manual link: http://al-kousa.com/download/ALKO_2kto7k_OwnerManual.pdf Dexter Brake sub section manual -look at the wire gauge table! I have 10 gauge on my 30' Ragen TH fiver -this is what it took to have lesss than 3% voltage drop on the measured cable run wired in a star or home run scheme. http://www.dexteraxle.com/i/u/6149609/f/600-8K_Service_Manual_3-13/Electric_Brakes_3-13.pdf

RE: Maiden Voyage with new Voltage --- and Brake Issues

In my experience no electric brake will lock up the wheels on a heavy trailer on pavement when you are moving at a good clip. If installed properly and adjusted properly they have the potential to skid at highway speeds. Most systems are installed with minimal sized wiring and poor connections that compromise performance potential. Brake ajustment has a huge impact, too. Most people adjust electric trailer brakes like they did on their 1960's car/trucks -this is not nearly tight enough to operate properly -both speed and intensity, due to the way electric trailer brakes use magnet pull and inertia to energize.
