RE: Palm Springs to Puerto Penasco

Sorry I was not more specific in my post..I do need both visa stamp and car permit as after PP i am going to San Miguel just need to know which is the easier crossing and the fastest route thanks Les As far as I know you get your visa stamp at San Luis too, the car permit is on the road after the town of Caborca, I think they move the San Emeterio from Highway 2 outside Sonoyta to Caborca now.

RE: Palm Springs to Puerto Penasco

Les, If I was to do this trip I would cross South of Yuma at San Luis. You avoid a small toll between Mexicali and San Luis not ot mention the traffic of Mexicali. From there it is fall off the porch easy to get to Penasco as from the border cross at San Luis you go east 6 miles and follow the signage to El Golfo de Santa Clara and Puerto Penasco. The turn off to Penasco is just before you get to El Golfo, but if you need a potty stop there is a Pemex just on the right 1/2 mile or so in El Golfo. From El Golfo turn off Penasco is just 1.75 hours away. The roads are great but during wind, sand can sometimes be on the road making it a bit slippery. The return trip I would use Lukeville/Sonoyta as there is no traffic compared to any of the other crossings. Have fun and enjoy your trip.

RE: Travel Map released by Canadian Gov.

I don't know. I find it amusing that Governments prepare these kind of documents. Basically it covers them in case someone does run into trouble and the Gvt can say "see I warned you" In my opinion though the information would be better if it was more accurate, something like "don't go to the circle K at Baseline and 43rd avenue near Phoenix at 1:30 in the morning on June 4th. There's gonna be some bad guys there to do you harm" silly I know but you can't protect everyone from anything just by preparing a document.People still have to think. In great safe areas dumb people still get into problems. Since it wasn't on the list I guess they only have themselves to blame. I think presuming to know where these things may flare up - possibly just scares people and doesn't provide good information. I went to Spain a few years ago for my 29th anniversary. There were US Gvt warnings about Madrid, Sevilla, Jerez. We went anyway and fully enjoyed ourselves. Had we been timid people we would have heeded the warnings and missed out a rich travel experience (including sleeping in a rental car on the side of the road near Trujillo) there were massive warnings about renting cars and driving yourselves around......never in 12 days saw why that warning was in place. Oh I will continue thinking for myself until the Gvt says I can't.....Just kidding I still will.

RE: This Years Road Reports 2013/01

I just had the displeasure of driving from Sonoyta Sonora to San Luis Sonora on highway 2. in 195 km only about half of it was finished and the areas under construction were rough rough rough. I left San Luis and took the Coastal highway back home to Puerto Penasco, it is an awesome road. See you guys next year here in Mexico, have a great summer! Keep up the great work you are doing in posting quality information about Mexico!

RE: Where are Mexico fuel prices headed?

I just changed my Sonora Plates to National plates here in Penasco. The cost (Sonora has Tenencia) to suspend my former plates 1800.00 pesos, to obtain and register my new plates 2200.00 pesos. My van is an 04. In November of last year immigration changes took place. In those changes vehicle importation changed as well. Now you can import your vehicle as a National if it is 6 years or older. In Penasco and the Northern areas you can import vehicles newer than that but they have to be what is called "Frontera" Which means you can only use them up in the Frontera region and of course North of the Border. To use your car for travel South of Caborca (in my case) you would need a special permit which is good for one year. This keeps newer cars from heading south and being sold on the cheap. I dont like paying the Vehicle tax but it makes sense to me from a business point of view

RE: Where are Mexico fuel prices headed?

Moisheh, When I go into the tax office there is a line around the building with people paying their taxes. I am not sure where you got your intel but even if stuff is more expensive families are getting by, albeit just getting by. There is a different view of money here on the ground and I appreciate it and am adopting to it as well. Pemex may be corrupt but name a corporation anywhere that is that big and isn't.......it does not exist. Sometimes when I read your post I wonder. Mexico won't be like the USA of the past (nobody wants to be the USA of present) anytime soon, nor should it be. It isn't like Canada either, it is Mexico. Viva Mexico!

RE: Puerto Peñasco / Rocky Point

Would love to hear how you Rocky Point trip goes. I would like to go down there but partner is concerned :) I've driven down for day trips with a friend with no problems. Partner is concerned because we have a new rig with a Mercedes chassis and the logo :). Enjoy your trip! :) Come on down the water is fine. Not sure what your reference to Mercedes is but whatever. I helped with a group of millionaires last month with very nice coaches, they were not concerned nor should you be.

Moisheh, thanks for clarifying "RV Tourism" being down. Overall tourism is up and heading for some highs this year in relationship to the past 6 years.

RE: San Carlos - what a difference a day - or sixty - makes

In Peñasco we are full to capacity on the beach. I am writing from the comfort of my non- beach home which I guess I will not leave for the remainder of the weekend.

RE: Where are Mexico fuel prices headed?

I think the simple answer is - they will continue to rise until the demand is weaker than the supply. It is the same in the States. It doesn't matter if some is sold on "spot" or whatever. The refineries are very good at what they do - everywhere, and that is to get as much $$ from you for a gallon from them (or litre) There is no rhyme or reason....just business....just greed. I would say if less people bought gas and diesel in Mexico it would go down, if more people buy gas and diesel...then the price goes up. I am more concerned with the price of tacos and beer which seem to react more directly to consumer demand.

RE: Puerto Peñasco / Rocky Point

It's been a great season so far......having said that you will have no problem finding a space, we have 810 Full Hookups in town and an additional 500 or so dry docks available. If you want specifics please PM me. Would have commented earlier but took a group on a long weekend trip to Baja California!

RE: One of life's little mysteries.

Because some smarty pants always has to make a negative comment about how much better their country is and how they will never come to Mexico and are happy traveling in their "good ole" country. Amen... Amen twice!

RE: San luis Border crossing south of Yuma

What part of California are you going to? The reason I ask is that if you cross at Tecate it is much smaller crossing and less busy. If you are just going to Yuma the crossing at San Luis is fine but on a Saturday you may think about crossing at Lukeville and using Hwy 8 across to Yuma. The crossing times at Lukeville are very short compared to San Luis - just 2 cents......

RE: One of life's little mysteries.

If someone wants to tell a horror story about Mexico.......IMHO it's OK. If you tell that story to me however, you will have to endure 100 positive great stories for every one negative you tell. So you better have a lot of time. My wife and I are in our 8th year here and enjoy it everyday. The people, the food, the culture, it makes us better people. Thanks to God that we are here.

RE: One Month

If you are interested in Peñasco PM me and I will hook you up with links. December is not bad in Peñasco but like they say above to be warm you have to go further south. Having said that I played golf every Wednesday in shorts last December

RE: Don't take your guns to town..

Heck, if I thought I needed to have a firearm here, I would not live in México. There is no question in my mind, that petty theft is the overwhelming "crime" a person might be exposed to venturing south of the border. One exception would be macho vehicle eye-candy, usually an SUV, -without- recreational vehicle accessories. "Oh we attacked some gringos with our AK47's, grenades, and M16's and look! Now we're hundredaires!" Loved it! I had a guy tell me in Q this year that he got himself all armed up with an ar15. He lives in Prescott Az. He said he needed it when the day comes that he has a group of guys at his front door demanding all his "stuff" - I told him I live in Mexico and don't feel the need to be armed ...he just didn't get it. I feel sorry for people who feel so afraid that they feel naked without the guns. Hundreaires...I love it
