RE: Winter PUP camping
Haven't done Winter camping yet... but what we generally do for water is get a couple 2.5 gallon jugs from Walmart and fill 'em with fresh water before we go. We prop it on the PUP's stove (while not in use of course) with the spigot hanging over the sink. Then we just open the spigot when we need water and let it drain into a gray water tank.
We have a fresh water tank on the PUP, but we haven't used it yet. Perhaps as we go more next year. Also, we have no hot water in the PUP... so don't worry about that.
Sadly, our season is over...
Well, we were supposed to go out one last time this coming weekend, for a long weekend. We have all our gear, including a Mr. Buddy heater... but the plans fell through. The folks we were going to go with made other plans, and since we're moving, and the house is in shambles... we thought it wisest to stay home and continue taking care of those things.
Yes... I know several of you keep on going throughout winter, and perhaps next year we'll work up to that. But until spring... we'll be staying at base camp.
I'll have to winterize in amongst the move... but on the plus side, we've bought our own house, and now have room to store the PUP there! No more storage fees!
Well, that's my sad story... I'm trying not to think about it. :)
RE: Say it ain't so.......
I've got one more trip booked for October. Looking forward to it. After that, we're moving. Buying a house, with room for the trailer!!! Won't have to store it offsite any more.
I'll have to see if I'll winterize at the house or at the storage. It'll depend on how fast it gets cold.
Next year? Hope to do some trips. I'd like to get at least one trip to VA, but my brother wants to join us for a trip too, so perhaps NY.
RE: crank
Coleman's lift system does that. If you crank down (opposite the up direction) the roof will continue to slide down even if you stop cranking until you crank up, just enough for the ratcheting system to catch.
If I'm understanding you correctly that is.
RE: fear of bunks
First thing I had to do when we got our PUP, put out the largest bed (and therefore the one that sticks out the most) get to the outside edge, and bounce a bit. When it didn't wiggle, I felt pretty good.
The ply wood is stronger than you realize as long as you keep it dry. The supports are even more reassuring. Don't worry, be happy. Relax and enjoy.
Brass tapered fitting crack prevented stove from working
Just FYI to any out there who may have similar trouble.
I've got a 2000 Coleman Santa Fe PUP which has a line from the LP tank to the side of the trailer for the outside cook stove. The inside stove worked, but I couldn't get the outside stove to work, and would smell gas when I tried to use it.
I had a friend who has worked with gas lines before come take a look with me. He has an ultrasonic sensor for testing gas flow that picks up the ultra high pitch whistle of leaking gas. First he checked the pressure on both sides of the high pressure regulator, then we worked down the line to the fitting mounted on the side of the trailer.
Behind the trailer frame, where the line is connected to the fitting we heard a leak. We disassembled the fitting, and the tapered nut had a hairline crack in it. Small to look at, but enough to keep the gas pouring out.
Of course everybody should be careful with their gas lines. If you turn on the gas, but things aren't working, turn it off again. If you get the chance, work with somebody who can show you the safe ways to check for problems, and always be careful.
Now we're ready for our next trip!
RE: Is adding a furnace to a 2000 Coleman Santa Fe possible?
Hmm... looking at the prices, I don't think I'll do a furnace any time soon. But a Mr. Buddy is probably what we'll do for now.
I like to think about mods I can do to my trailer, adding things to it, but I'll probably try to wait, and some day, maybe get a bigger PUP, or TT. Probably the first mod I'll do is a battery box. But it's nice to have the information.
RE: How do you pack your popup and your tow vehicle?
We have the cabinets and underseat areas loaded at all times. Tho, since this is our first year w/ the PUP, I have opened it before each trip to add gear for the trip.
We keep 2 Tiki Torches in the PUP, but keep the fuel in a tote that stays in the house between trips. I took a television (the other TV) w/ us the last trip in case of rainy days, but that went in the house between trips.
Question: I have a Coleman stove (uses the Coleman white fuel). I obviously keep the fuel and any other flammables (lighters, tiki torch fuel, 1lb propane tank(s)) in the tote that goes in the TV and house between trips. However, would it be safe to store the Coleman stove, even tho some fuel remains in it's tank, in the PUP between trips? So far it's also come in the TV w/ us and kept in the house.
Is adding a furnace to a 2000 Coleman Santa Fe possible?
I've looked into getting a portable propane heater and/or electric, but I'm wondering what would be involved in adding a furnace to the pup. Are there kits you can buy? Where would I look?
RE: Camping Items at walmart
What we do, is go to Big Lots (closeout merchandise store) for cheap versions of things we need, then Wal Mart, and if we really need it and can't find it, Bass Pro Shops. (Those are the 3 locals in our area.)
So far, we haven't had to go to Bass Pro. :)
A Victorian bus to RV mod
I don't know if any of you folks saw this, but somebody has some serious time and TLC for this conversion.

RE: Photo Thread - Post Your PUP Pics Here
I think we may want to keep this site a secret, tho we'll tell you it was Pine Grove Furnace again.
It was pretty spacious, and nobody right on top of us.

The layout was really nice. I think we get more comfortable every time we go.

This site would be great to bring friends on, if they tent. To the left of the food/screened tent, you can see a pad back in the woods.
That's part of this site!!! But separate enough that they could have some privacy. (And still, nobody on top of it!)

RE: Waking me up earlier on the Road
Our girl likes to sleep in even out camping.
She barks at the house when we leave her alone. We haven't left her alone while camping.
When we went camping this past weekend, she didn't want to eat. I think it was cause she was outside, and too excited to eat... but then she gets sick. We don't want to keep feeding her treats (though she will sometimes eat them).
RE: Waking me up earlier on the Road
I've noticed many parks don't want pets left unattended. Our dog has a problem barking at home when we're not there, and we're working on that.
sue.t, you don't have a barking problem, huh? What kind of dogs?
RE: Moisture got in!!! How!?
Only about a month, since the last use.
I'm looking at getting an RV type cover, to keep the elements off, and let the PUP breath, but during this time, it was not covered.
It's probably just a good idea to keep it dry inside.
