RE: Pick Up Tailgate

Usually you open the gate to a 45 degree angle and the right side of the gate will lift off the hinge. Slide the left side out once the right side is lifted and thats it.
The above - which takes about 20 seconds - is also the reason to do some theft prevention!
TG theft may be no big deal where you live - but in major metro areas it's very much a thriving "business". Traveler beware!
There's lots of latch locks, etc. available - as well as lots of "home-grown" solutions. Some of the 'em -the home grown variety-
may require some drilling, involve padlocks, etc.
A really cheap & easy security method is a hose clamp around the right side "pin". (The TG can't slide out w/o removing the clamp.)
While this may only delay a *dedicated* thief - it may cause him to move on to the "20 second" variety TG. Time and "no tools" (for him) may work in your favor.
~
MPG (for me) wasn't a factor in going to a "V" (notched) gate.
Easy removal (way lighter), hitching with gate "up", no big deal if you accidentally drop a corner on the ground when removing, and lastly - no theft problem, - - were considerations.
Storage. Like Frank, the stock gate went in the cardboard box the "V" gate came in - then under a bed in the (stick) house.
Also - see the thread currently running on "notched tailgates" -and-
a search should bring up (the many) old threads on the subject.

RE: Notched "gate" explanation?

Get on their mailing list.
Lots of reg catalogs & "sale catalogs", even if you don't buy anything.
I did get the TG from them - it's been a couple of years, but seems to me it *may* have been on sale -or- a "free shipping for purchases over XX dollars".

RE: Unusual Things People Camp With

We carry my DW's harp. Don't leave home without it.
Nothing unusual about that - lots of us have DWs that "harp"!

and for the edit -
sometime, someone, somewhere - had to have seen *this* -
but guess it's not too unusual either, LOL!

RE: Just Curious - how many retired emergency services

Retired Master Sergeant with Colorado State Patrol. First patrol car was a 74 Plymouth Fury with a 440. I haven't heard the sweet sound of an engine like that for a long time. It'll put a smile on your face everytime. :)
Well, depending on how that 440 was equipped, after '71 lots of the
engines had lots of cubes - made a lot of noise (that "sweet sound") -
but were still lacking in the HP dept.
Ex. One day in that "era" a PD pursuit went by in front of our Fire Station which had a long stretch of road available. Heard it coming from a mile away!
Seemed the PD units weren't really gaining on the pursued vehicle.
When we asked the cops about it later - there were some red faces. Guy "escaping" had a six-banger.
Many years ago - a '57 Olds with a J-2 was "the" PD pursuit vehicle
in the So. CA area.

RE: New Tires, How Old?

I hate to break it to you but if you only knew how old some of the food is when you purchase it. I was in a warehouse of a candy manufacturer recently and saw Halloween Christmas and Easter chocolates etc all on pallets at the same visit.
And here we have panic stricken tire purchasers.
Now if you find them 3-4 yrs old it is another matter but 6 months come on now.
Just my opinion
Huh!
Candy and Tires?? :h
Check the date codes on food & tires.
Also metal valve stems for the Hershey's Kisses.
Just my .59 cents.
(Can't get a candybar for a nickel or dime anymore)

RE: Powerchair Carrier on rear of 5th Wheel TT

I would like to mount a Powerchair Carrier on the back of my TT. I would use a custom welded 2" receiver and 2" sq steel. The carrier weighs 65 lbs and the chair probably 250lbs. Is this possible and would it upset the balance of the TT or cause towing problems.
Thanks
Jim -
I think we're not really sure if you have a Travel Trailer ("TT")
or a Fifth Wheel.
The subject title "Powerchair Carrier on rear of a 5th Wheel TT" - doesn't jibe with the above . . "on the back of my TT" -
which sounds more like it's a Travel Trailer.
But - - you posted in the Fifth Wheel forum.
So - maybe clarify which it is - and you might consider posting a new question in the RVing With Disabilities forum - or maybe the Mods will see where you "belong".

I haven't been able to find the $150 ones people are talking about.
Northern Tool and Equipment. (Northern Tool dot com)
However, I see they're up to $189. in the catalog I have.
The brand is Stromberg Carlson Products, Inc.
Other outfits carry it also.

RE: Buying first fifth wheel

IMO - seems the RV business would be slow this time of the year in BC.
Lots of private parties that consider selling won't bother to advertise when
they think it's the off-season.
Hang in there, keep looking.

RE: How much off MSRP?

well here in Montana there bottom price are quite a bit higher than the midwest or southwest. That might be because there is less competition, but they wont honor out of state prices. At least that has been my experience. Its a buyers market so I would think at least 30% off for a 1st-2nd pencil.
Guess it depends on what you want to buy and the dealer!
I'm in CA - and was ready to go across country in '06 for the best deal, which was one of the RV Wholesalers
Dealer in MONTANA matched it exactly.
(Marden's in Great Falls & Havre)
They got my business (no regrets, great people, would do it again!)

RE: Is a GMC 3500 enough for a 18,500# Teton

Besides the replies here, check with the people that tow long/heavy fifth wheels on the Escapees MDT -and- HDT forums.
Many have "progressed" from LDT to MDT to HDT, and/or arriving somewhere in between.
Unfortunately RV Net doesn't have specific forums for these TVs.

RE: Health Care

lwmuddy - think you are "muddy-ing" the waters - lots of flaws in with your analogy - and your take on the - "whole, crazy situation".
Once again, avoiding politics (*you're not!*) -
If you were the CEO (or major stockholder) of an Insurance Company - (say) making 100 million (or billion) a year in *profit* - - and there was even a remote possibility that the *profit* would/could be cut in: half or by a third or a quarter . . . .
. . . would you think it was a "good thing"?
Would you be in favor of any changes which would interrupt the (perfectly legal) flow of dollars?
I know I wouldn't!
Besides looking for a new job, my resume wouldn't be worth the paper it's printed on - and I would be flown out of the Club by my peers (owners/investors, stockholders with the same "persuasion") with a baggage compartment ticket on a Dogpatch Airlines DC-3!

RE: Health Care

9220sigman - has missed the "cost" part of his coverage.
"Someone" pays - even if your employer supplies the medical plan/s
What I mean is - part of your pay "package" includes your medical plan.
Look at it as part of your salary. It is. (Of course, it's called a "benefit").
The eye-opener that several posters mentioned, who have had employer paid medical coverage, is when you lose (intentionally or for other reasons) the *EMPLOYER* (paid) benefit.
Now *YOU* pay - and find out just how much that "benefit" is worth!
For those that have been involved in employer/employee negotiations, the first part is lots easier to understand.
There's no good answer to the OPs question . . . .however some *citizens* in the
USA are *WAY* better off than others - and medical insurance costs (if the citizen has insurance) can be all over the map depending on many factors.
Lastly, no need to go political - just check the stats on the *PROFIT* (percentage) made by the medical insurance companies.

RE: How Many Miles On Goodyear Maratthons

Just be careful about your load capacity. Not sure what year that 3400RL is, but if it's 2007 or later your kind of stuck with he STs or you'll have to go to G's or H's to keep the load capacity on those 7K axles and the 15,500 GVWR. The Mich XP ribs won't cut it - they are only rated for 3,040 lbs each, and you'll loose over a ton of your payload capacity.
If you have a very early 2007 or earlier, you only have 6K axles.
We went to the G614s - mounted them right onto the factory Montana Tredit wheels which are rated for the full 3,750lbs@110psi that the Gs offer.
Mile High - nice continuous support of GY G614.
Good info on this 16 page thread that ran for 4-4-07 to 3-7-09,
with links to other threads, charts, etc.
Warning--GY G614
and -
this one from 6-27-09 to 7-30-09 -
"Disgusted with Goodyear" (GY G614)
Might as well furnish the good, bad and the ugly for an informed decision.

RE: Buying a site in an RV Resort.

Hello fellow campers/RV lifers,
I would just like to offer some advice (my opinion) on buying a site in a RV resort. Be patient! Be observant!
>>>>
I know this sounds like someone who is just complaining - and please take it for that! If word doesn't get out from a fellow camper, it could be you typing this after spending $45-50K on a lot and undesirable campers you are now stuck living near. Glad I'm not.
Maybe I read (interpret) your post differently than others.
Down to your closing - - "Glad I'm not."
Does that mean your post was advice to rent before buying -
(you didn't buy)
*or*
did you buy and are now offering advice on avoiding a/the negative experience that you had?
Hope it's the first version.
IMO - have to agree with "musicmole".
But disagree with mowermech- not everyone wants to winter in cold country - or there wouldn't be "snowbirds".
There *are* quality ownership lots in quality parks - Retama Village in Mission TX for example.

RE: How Many Miles On Goodyear Maratthons

Readers should note that at least two of the posters have TTs.
Then there was the one about Marathons on a boat.
Apples to Oranges is not a good comparison.
I had 15" Marathons on a 20' TT that were beautiful and doing fine at about ten years old. Lots of miles on them - and still lots of tread left.
When I got the 34' FW - and happened to have one of the (USA mfg) "D" Marathons off due to a puncture (caught it before a flat) - it didn't take rocket science to know that they were not up to the job. (Balloons with tread!)
Sure - they were still going strong after (only) about 5K miles - but the "handwriting" was on the sidewalls (ripples) and the amount of "squish" when loaded.
Off they came - and XPS Ribs went on.
~
JCOh well, I figure my (one of two) inputs regarding Marathons on a boat was more relevant than your continous plug for ribs.
Mile High -
The lack of oxygen at 5280' altitude is affecting your attitude!
Apparently you didn't read carefully (and jumped in while I was editing).
Your Marathons on your boat (experience) are identical to *MY* Marathons on my TT. Unless you figure I got "guilty" 2 years sooner.
(Trlr dry weight same as your boat).
Figure whatever you like.
BTW - it's "continuous".

RE: How Many Miles On Goodyear Maratthons

Like JIMLIN says, Apples to Oranges is not a good comparison.
I had 15" Marathons on a 20' TT that were beautiful and doing fine at about ten years old. Lots of miles on them - and still lots of tread left. Like the boat (& guilt) - I replaced them 'cause they were old.
(Might add, found out then - that GY only mfg certain tire sizes once a year. Way out of date codes - replaced those with Coopers).
IMO- hearing that GY replaced G614s (twice?) and paid for repairs,
is not my idea of a "good" story.

RE: Geo Method toilet chemicals

I don't know about that GEO Method. I think it's mostly hype. I tried it and it didn't clean my sensors or reduced any smell.
Using lots of water and store bought tank cleaners did the trick for me.
You didn't take time to read all the info available!
It's *NOT* a deodorant - or intended to "reduce any smell".
But, if you follow the directions, it usually will clean sensors.
The three links in the second post *here* cover it very well.
The last of the three (the blogs) explain which water softeners work well, which ones don't.
Scroll down a bit to see -
"Precipitating and non-Precipitating.
The Precip type, while not harmful, don't do as good a job - and include:
Arm & Hammer Washing Soda, Raindrops, Blue Due, BORAX, Climalene, Melo, White King Washing Soda, and Borateen."
BTW - in CA - (Vons) Pavilions also has Calgon liquid.
