RE: Camera - what lenses

The answers are really determined by your price range and how much weight you want to carry. You can easily spend thousands and DSLR body and high quality long lenses. The other option and probably what I would go for, is a reasonable body from Canon or Nikon (both have bodies in the $500-$1000) that is comfortable for you and get something like the Tamron 18-270mm lens. That will make for a reasonably compact walking around camera that will allow you to do reasonable zooms. Of course, with the extreme zooms like this, you are sacrificing some quality and speed. If you wanted more reach, you could go with a Sigma 50-500mm, but also more money. In contrast, if you really want to reach out and take the best possible wildlife pictures, you can always go with a Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Lens or a Cannon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Autofocus Lens. Of course, one of these lenses would set you back 11K or 13K respectively. I personally use an older Canon DSLR and an older version of the Tamron lens except in the 18-200mm range. The 18-270mm wasn't out at the time. I previously had some big lenses that were very high quality, but found that I got to where I left them home most of the time because I simply didn't want to carry them around when I was just hiking. Like I said, it is all a tradeoff. I went with one of the super zooms because I only wanted to carry one lens and it has worked reasonably well. Admittedly, I do miss the speed of nicer lenses at times, but overall, I've been very happy with the switch.

RE: Trailblazer Successor

Drive all the brand trucks (ext cab, short bed) and decide which works best for you and is the most comfortable. You can get the trucks pretty well loaded out if that is your desire. You could also look at something like the Avalanche from Chevy.

RE: Shortin Yellows

Funny this topic is here now. We had this story on our local news last week. When the red light cameras went up, the city claimed it was all for safety and there were allegations then that the yellow lights were shortened. If you want to see what red light cameras are there for, notice the next to the last line in the print story... "However the City says it could take the cameras down all together if they're no longer profitable." Of course, I just stop when the light turns yellow :B

RE: Any LEO retired or currently sworn here!

I was only 26 when I went through. The oldest person in our class was 59 and the only place he had any trouble (and not much at that) was some of the defensive tactics training. Be sure you stretch well even if you have to start earlier than the rest of the class. Being wiser than most in your class, be careful you don't overthink some of it. Sometimes, it really is as simple as it appears. Also remember that your communication and interpersonal skills will save your butt much more often than your defensive tactics and firearms skills will. Hone them to the best of your ability. Above all, go with the flow during the academy. There is the old saying that the nail that sticks out the most will get hammered. You don't want to be that nail.

RE: Another Rant - can't help it!!

I don't see a problem with leaving partially burned firewood in the firepit so long as it is completely out. The next camper will burn it. We always emphasize to our kids that we have to leave the site in better shape trash wise than we found it. They already know to police the entire campsite while DW and I are getting everything packed up. We usually don't have a lot of trash around anyway because we also don't let them throw anything on the ground. Trash goes in a trash can/bag or in their pocket until they come to one. We even take a small bag with us when we hike to pick up trash we may run across on the trail.

RE: Point and shoot camera recommendation.

There are a ton of good cameras on the point/shoot market. I would go somewhere that has a large selection and see which one works best for you and feels best in your hands. I would stick with the major brands such as Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc. Also, don't worry about digital zoom, only concern yourself with optical zoom. Depending on your field work and typical areas, you may want to consider a waterproof camera. We have had a Sony, Nikon, Canon, and Panasonic in point and shoot models and all were fine. We currently use a Canon (can't remember the model) as the grab and go camera and it works fine. My son recently bought a JVC waterproof model to take to summer camps that was cheap, but takes good pictures.

RE: Another Rant - can't help it!!

We try very had to keep our kids quiet after dark. It actually helps that we have a popup, because they get to hear how well everyone else can hear them when they are loud. Fortunately, we've only had one really negative experience. This was before we got the camper and my DW and I were tent camping at a state park. About 8 PM, a group of about 8 college-aged people came in 3 sites down from us and started setting their tents up. By 10, they were reasonably set up and pretty much drunk. Then the fun starts...yelling, fighting, and building the biggest fire I've ever seen in a CG. Tried the after-hours number with no luck. This went on until about 1 when their firewood ran out. This only presented a small problem as they proceeded to cut small trees and limbs from larger trees. Apparently, someone got through to the park staff as one of the park rangers (the sworn kind with a gun and badge) showed up. It looked like he issued a number of citations and then stood by while they packed up, cleaned up, and departed. I was very happy to see him walk around the entire site making them pick up every scrap of paper/trash.

RE: Photographers - What DSLR do you have?

I have an older Rebel XTi, but you really can't go wrong with either Canon or Nikon. I have a Canon because that is the film camera I had, so I was already invested in some lenses and other accessories. If I were starting from scratch, I would go somewhere that has both Canon and Nikon and try them both and see which I was most comfortable with.

RE: More Wiper Blade Questions

I use the beam style that I get from Costco. They put them on sale every so often and I buy them then. My experience with the refills was that they would work great for about a month and then the streaks would appear. I haven't seen that with the beam type.

RE: Battery Jumpstart Question

If you have a concern about getting some kind of feedback or voltage spike through the TT, you could always disconned your cables for one of the batteries before jumping. I wouldn't worry about it myself. Biggest problem would be if you hooked up the jumper cables wrong.

RE: Cab over front window protector

I'm not sure if someone makes it or not,but you could look into clear plastic film like that designed for the front end and headlights.

RE: Is this only an Arizona issue ????

For some reason, people who use the DVD kiosks outside the grocery store think it's OK to park in the fire lane. I guess it's because they think it will only be for a few minutes, but they still end up blocking the crosswalk with the curb cut so you can push your cart over the curb or blocking the sight lines making it harder for drivers to see if anyone is coming out of the door. That or picking up the meds from the pharmacy. The best one I ever saw was guy that used to park in front of the grocery store near our house. I would see his car in the fire lane all the time, so I'm fairly sure he just parked there to shop. The problem is, the lane isn't that wide so it makes it difficult for other cars to get by and to turn out of the parking lanes. Low and behold, an Appalachian American with a large truck and aftermarket steel bumper turned a little too wide and took out most of the passenger side of this guy’s car. Needless to say, guy was not a happy camper and called the cops. Police show up, take one look and tell the guy, sorry, you were illegally parked. Cited him for parking in a fire lane and faulted him with the crash. All this occurred as I went into the store to pick up a few things. When I came out, I talked with the officer and found out that they had gotten a number of complaints about people parking in the fire lane and had been providing tickets as needed. I've not seen this guy parking there since this.

RE: Is this only an Arizona issue ????

I happens everywhere. I usually try to find a spot far out, but not all the way out. Also, if the lot has those little islands for a tree or bush, I try to park next to it, pulling as close to the curb as possible. Now, I do it because it is easier to get in/out of the space since the truck is so long. Still got plenty of dings...

RE: Couple sues USFS after son hurt by falling tree.

It seems to me a lot of frivolous lawsuits could be eliminated if the loser or loser's attorney if the loser is destitute were required to pay the winner's legal costs. I would think it would make some think twice about the merits of their case, especially if the losing atty had to pay because their client was unable to.

RE: PUP Awning worth the darn?

We use ours when we stay somewhere that isn't constantly windy such as at the beach. We also generally have a 12X12 ez-up that we also have. We have used one or the other and used both on occasion.

RE: Housing prices

Florida is still a very spotty market. Some areas are starting to recover, but I think most overall are still down. I don't know that it will recover to previous levels anytime in the near future or even if it should. Some areas were way over priced before the crash and the values went down to what they probably should have been all along.

RE: Opinions on Diesel Chips

I don't know that even if you saw an increase in mileage, it would offset the cost of the programmer. I don't know how many times I've see people on here spending hundreds/thousands of dollars to see a 1-2 mpg increase that they will never see a breakeven point. Plus, I would be willing to risk voiding the warranty.
