RE: Smoked at the Pedestal Need Help (long post)

I assume you checked the fuses on the converter. There are probably two 30 amp fuses on it. Next, buy a Progressive Industries EMS of the proper size for your rig. I never attach my rig to the pedestal without it. The EMS won't solve this problem but it just may prevent the next one.

RE: Slideouts and jacks not working

On my HWH slide system, there is a 15 amp fuse in a wire at the pump. I had that fuse blow once. HWH has pretty good service manuals on their web site. Try downloading the ones for your systems and go through the trouble shooting sequence. That's what I ended up doing.

RE: Weather radios, etc

I rely on my smart phone and the Weather Bug app. It sends alerts to you based on the phones location. No need to set up the weather radio with SAME codes. On the other hand if I am in a location with poor or no cell phone service then I use my Oregon Scientific WR601 radio. I so seldom use it that I have to read the directions each time I want to set it up. It is a portable unit that you can carry with you if you want as long as you are staying in the same area that the SAME codes are set for. For outdoor temperature, again I use my cell phone most of the time. I do have a rather cheap I/O digital thermometer. You will find the Weather Bug app even has a lightning check on it that will tell you how far you are from lightning strikes.

RE: Flexible Heater Ducting

If you can get at the connections check to make sure they aren't leaking. Flex duct is almost too simple to install and many times the installer doesn't take the time to make sure there is a good air seal. The air seal is done with good tape or mastic while the mechanical part of the connection is done with a hose clamp.

RE: hot water heater

You may have two problems. The ECO should shut the water heater down at about 180F. Apparently yours isn't doing this. I would first look to make sure both the thermostat and ECO are in good contact with the tank. Make sure the springs are in place to help force the sensors against the tank. Normally, the thermostat will fail to open the circuit and then the ECO will shut the system down. If the ECO shuts it down, the WH won't relight until you cycle the switch. I don't know if a bad control board could cause this problem, but you could light the water heater and then pull one of the thermostat wires, the WH should shut down. If it doesn't then your problem lies elsewhere and I would suspect the control board. You can test the sensors by placing them in hot water and using an ohm meter check to see what temperature the contacts open but given the work involved I would just replace them. You have to take them out to test them and the cost for new sensors isn't that high.

RE: Atwood water heater question.

Check the water temperature when you think the water is hot enough and the unit should shut down. The thermostat will control the temperature at around 140F or so. If the thermostat fails, the ECO will shut the unit down at about 180F. Should that happen, you will have to turn the unit off and then back on to get it to light again. The thermostat and ECO are sold as a pair and it takes only about 5 minutes to replace them. My t-stat failed and I had extremely hot water. I checked the temperature and it was about 170F. Way to hot for safety. Of course, this may not be your problem but checking the temp will tell you if the heater has reached the temperature for the t-stat to shut the burner down. Go here for a service manual. Bryant RV . The water heater manual is near the bottom of the page

RE: Windows 8 Street and Trips

Have you checked the Help section in S&T? The HP may need a driver that is not installed. Did your GPS receiver come with a driver? I can't really help. Maybe try this forum

RE: Streets and Trips ?

I too would like to have the ability to disable the zoom out with a change. I draw a box of the area I am interested in by right click and hold, drag the cursor to box around the area, release right click and then left click in the box. Pressing the '=' key will zoom in and you can use that for quickly zooming but it may not zoom in the area you are interested in. The '-' key zooms out. I haven't found a faster way but I'm always interested.

RE: AC blows when heater is turned on

I had a '98 Winnebago Vectra that did something similar. I never ran the furnace on 12 volts so don't know about that part. It ended up being the thermostat. I was able to get a replacement and that solved the problem.

RE: Fanstatic Vent

That switch under the lid is connected to the ground lead of the fan motor. A little over a year ago, I had the same problem and when I called Fantastic Vent I was told to take a wrench up and tighten the nut on the switch. I suppose all that did was to scrape a bit of corrosion away resulting in better contact. Later, I went back up on the roof, loosened the nut and sprayed contact cleaner under the nut. After re-tightening the nut and then loosening it again, I applied a bit of dielectric grease under the nut and the motor lead. So far, after a year anyway, the fan still works. I attended the FMCA rally in Indianapolis last year and wanted to have some service work done on my other vent fan. There was no one at the Fantastic Vent table but there was a sign that said go to the Atwood booth for service work. I went to the booth and they had no idea what to do other than to tell me to go back to the table and sign up for service work. I'm afraid service work has gone form way beyond normal to non-existent.

RE: Civil War Tour

I just found this site. If you have a smart phone, see if they have a battlefield guide for the area you will be visiting. Wish I knew about it earlier when I visited Gettysburg. I will download the other battlefields apps they have so I will be prepared. http://www.civilwar.org/battleapps/

RE: Mapping routes.

It does take awhile to get used to Streets & Trips but that isn't different than any other application. I use S&T to plan all of my trips but I use either my smart phone or my gps for my daily navigation. I begin by setting my start point and my end point in S&T. Let it calculate a route and then see if I like the route it picked. If not, I adjust the route. Under Route, Route Options you can select your start and stop times. As mentioned previously, set these times for the total number of hours you want to drive for the day. For example, if you want to drive 6 hours/day, set the Start Driving time for 9am and the End Driving time for 3am. S&T will show you where your ending stops are with a 'moon' icon on the map. Then right click on the moon icon and select Nearby Places. If you have Campgrounds selected in the View, Show or Hide Places, you will see a list of campgrounds near the moon icon. I usually use rvparkreviews.com to check on campgrounds. Once familiar with S&T, go to the Laptop GPS world site, POI Megafile and down load the POI megafile. You will find many POI's that will help in planning your trip. I can recommend the Cherry Hill campground. You will find all the campgrounds around D.C. pricey. This one is at the end of a bus route that will take you to the subway station so you can easily access D.C. Do not arrive in the Washington, D.C., area near rush hour times as traffic is really bad. My recommendation is to arrive around noon or shortly there after, or after about 7pm.

RE: Camping in or near Columbus, OH

Cass, Look at the KOA in Buckeye Lake. It is close to I70 about 25 miles east of Columbus. There really isn't much choice for that side of town. You can exit I70 at Livingston Ave or Kelton Ave in Columbus to get into Bexly. Should you like micro breweries, there is a small one in Buckeye Lake that has pretty good beer.

RE: replaced therma stat and now water gets too hot

If you reversed the ECO and the thermostat then the the thermostat is acting as the ECO and should shut the water heater down at about 140F and force you to cycle the switch in order to have the burner fire up again. If you've wire it properly and the new thermostat is bad, the ECO will shut down the water heater at about 170F and force you to recycle the switch to get the burner to fire up again. As suggested, make sure the thermostat and ECO are making good contact with the tank. You can test the thermostat by placing it in a cup of water with a thermometer. Hook up a multimeter across the terminals to test for continuity and then raise the temperature of the water. The thermostat should open at about 140F. My thermostat failed and the ECO shut the unit down. What I forgot was that on my water heater, the ECO for the electric side also kicked off. I had to manually reset that ECO by going to the back of the water heater and pushing the reset button on the ECO.

RE: Advice from new Winnebago owners?

Good advice from others but I strongly recommend attending the Winnebago Grand National Rally. You will learn more from a week in Iowa than you can learn anyplace else. When I had a Winnebago I walked the campground and stopped and talked to every owner that had a coach like mine. You can't get better info than that. Plus, many vendors are there and a great number of seminars to help you learn about the various systems on your rig.

RE: Your stories on cooling issues with DP dash air?

Mine doesn't work. On my previous motor home it worked for awhile but finally quit working. My opinion is that the dash air isn't worth the effort. I turn on my generator and run my house air. That way the whole house is cool when I get to my destination. There are also a lot of people that argue it is more fuel efficient to run the gen and house a/c than to run the dash air. I don't know how good that argument is but since that is what I do, I like it.

RE: Fantastic fan stopped

The switch under the lid is known to work intermittently. You can try gently tightening the nut on this switch to see if that fixes your problem. That was the solution offered by Fantastic Fan when I called with the same problem and it worked for me. If the fan is set to run, it should start up when you turn the nut; watch where you put your fingers. I wish I could remember the size of the wrench you will need. Take several wrenches with you so you don't have to make multiple trips up and down; 3/8, 7/16, and 1/2 inch.

RE: Freightliner Service in Orlando area

It would help if we knew what type of service you wanted. Several years ago I had a non-working engine temperature gauge. Orlando Freightliner spent 2 hours and told me I would need to spend $1800 for a whole new gauge cluster. I called the Freightliner service center in Gaffney, SC, and they were suspicious of the conclusion. When I took my RV to Gaffney, they connected the second wire to the temperature sender and fixed my gauge. It seems there are two wires to the temperature sender on the Caterpillar 3126 in that coach and one was not connected. If you can get to Gaffney, I highly recommend their service. If you are in Florida and headed north in the Spring, call them today and make a reservation as they are very busy during snow-bird transit season.
