RE: Brakeaway Switch/Cable

Relatively new to all this so bear with me. Just installed a new breakaway switch on my fiver. I'm sure it wouldn't be pretty at 60 mph but it just seems that during a breakaway situation wouldn't the 5vr or TT dropping onto it's landing gear or tongue be more effective in stopping it than 2 or 4 little brakes?Or am I completely missing something??? Many many years ago, I forgot to slip the break away cable over the ball on the tow vehicle. The cable from the travel trailer breakaway switch dangled loosely on the road as I drove on the highway at 55 mph, until it snagged on something on the roadway and yanked out the cable! I can tell you from personal experience that the trailer and the tow vehicle come to a stop very very quickly. So the system works very well as designed!!(it locks the wheels on the trailer):B

RE: Tonneau covers?

Just traded for a 2013 Chevy DRW and thinking about putting a retractable tonneau cover on it. Does anyone have any experiance or advice about specific brands? Looking at ReTrax, Roll & Lock, etc. Pros & cons on particular brands? Id probably get manual instead of a motorized model. Thanks. I have the Roll & Lock, I like it because its container box at the front of the pickup bed is the least in height. In other words it has the most clearance to the pickup box floor! I have an in bed fuel tank that still fits below it! Still about 2" of clearance between the top of the fuel tank and the bottom of the roll cover container.:)

RE: Trip to Alaska 2013

Put us on the list!!! So excited to be taking our first trip to Alaska. We plan to leave Nashville, Michigan early May for a two month (or so) trip. Thinking about heading into Canada going North out of North Dakota? Any suggestions would be great. Mark does computer work from the road and will need to access his clients via cell phone/computer...wondering how Verizon does in Canada/Alaska? Mark and Laurie If it were me I would use I29 in North Dakota crossing at Pembina/Emerson north to Winnipeg, west on Trans Canada #1 to the junction of the Yellowhead #16 in Manitoba and then North and West on the Yellowhead all the way to Edmonton. From Edmonton west again on the Yellowhead to Hwy #43 taking you all the way to Dawson Creek and mile 0 of the Alaska Hwy. Along this route is your best bet to have the services required ie. internet, cell phone service, and fhu campgrounds. Can't tell you about American phone services in Canada, however our cell phone worked everywhere from home to the Alaska border! P.S. you won't find pay phones anywhere in Alaska!! Have a great trip!

RE: Opinion on 5th wheel louverd tailgates

Had one on old truck, not on new one don't miss it! Also as some one said I have a sliding tonneau cover which is lockable and the notched tail gate kind of defeats that!

RE: MPG 5TH WHEEL VS TT

It seems everyone is saying there is little difference between a fiver and a TT. We have experienced the same almost no difference. Now from a lighter fiver to a heavier one, same little difference! Now almost no one mentioned speed differences! There I can tell you it makes a big difference, I tow slower for a couple of reasons, one I believe it's safer, when you have to react slower can mean the difference of being in the ditch or not! Two, the fuel consumption between 55 mph and 65 is considerable. All you need is more time and I have more time than money!

RE: drive license

Why is it ridiculous for a country to have a requirement for foreign drivers on its soil? If Canada required such a thing of me for me to be able to drive there, it would probably be a hassle or expense to acquire one, but I would do so because I respect the sovereignty of Canada. If you have such disrespect for Florida, maybe you shouldn't go there. Totally agree, you don't come into my house and start telling me how to rearrange my furniture! You are a guest!

RE: A Question for the 12 Volt Experts

Good thought I like it especially with a battery kill switch. Could this draw to much off that "little" wire and blow a fuse? I did unhook the TT batteries with the truck idling to make certain my tow battery charge wire was hot and working. It was, the inside lights, radio, etc all were working off the truck wire, when I turned off the truck the lights went out. (interior lights, not running lights that's a separate circuit)I did not test the slide, or the jack, I'm not sure the amps those motors pull. I have done it on our fifth with the landing leg motor, it worked. Have not tried it with slide motor, but believe it should work.

RE: Opinions On GPS Unit Needed Please

Other than the Rand McNally 7710 7720 are there other GPS's specifically for the RV community. We have a nuvi 2350 LMT which is great, however I would like something to warn of low clearances. Our trailer is 13 ft. H and the truck units for OTR don't often leave the interstates or travel the backroads looking for a campground. If a software update for any of the Garmins included height, width, and length clearances that would be awesome!

RE: A Question for the 12 Volt Experts

I always leave for camping with full batteries. The batteries are the interstate 12v (2) and they are new. When we pull up to a dry camping spot, I’d like to keep the truck idling and hooked up through the set up process. I’m hoping that my TV alternator and battery will assist the TT jacks as well as the slide so that I don’t have the initial drain I have when I set up unhooked. My feeling is that this process will pull from the TV and will preserve the electricity to use for my TT lights heater etc till the AM when I plug in the whisper Leaving the TV running and connected while setting up won't save much of the TT battery as most of the power for the jacks and slides will come from the TT battery! However if you want to conserve the TT battery while setting up you can leave the TV running and connected, and dis-connect the TT battery (negative post) do the setup, unhook the TV. Hook up the -ve post on the TT battery. Done.

RE: 2013 Silverback 33RL Questions

Anyone out there that has a 33RL can you answer a couple of questions for us? We have ordered a 33RL and are wondering if when the sofa air mattress bed is out is there room for another air mattress on the floor somewhere, a queen size. Also, is there any hallogen lites in the camper or are they all L.E.D. and what is the height of the basement storage area to the right of the door, we are wondering if we could put a little bar fridge in there to keep beers cold??? Thanks. You say ordered so I assume a 2013 and 33RL again assume silverback. We have a (2013) 29RE and most lights are LED, haven't opened up the hide a bed sofa yet. I think there will be enough room for an additional air bed. Can't say what your storage height will be.:)

RE: Opinions On GPS Unit Needed Please

If it's ok with the OP let's keep the thread going, I would like to hear from others about trucking/rv GPS that specifically alert or direct one away from low overpass or tight turns etc. Thanks.:)

RE: Six month stay in USA

A lot of good info here, however personal opinions are only good for making people aware of something they never heard of before! What is really good are links to official websites where the real rules are! example http://www.gov.mb.ca/health/mhsip/leavingmanitoba.html#4

RE: What Batteries Should I Buy, 2 12-Volt or 2 6-volt DC?

If in fact your trailer is like the last post on pg.3 you could (or a good sheet metal person could) change the hinge position from the top to the bottom (makes for harder LP bottle change) or modify the door to be removed and installed with latches. This option might not be doable without actually physically seeing the trailer!
