RE: Montana LLCs under attack in Iowa

There are a large number here that seem to indicate that we should give "almost" nothing, or as little as possible, to our government, at whatever level. Of those so advocating, how many are not satisfied with the state or fed infrastructure. There is a balance. There is a reason for taxes. There is also the ripple effect of taxes you do not pay being compensated by being spreaqd to others or other tax initiatives. I am definitely an advocate against a LLC outside of a state in which I own real ppty or have a vested interest. A LLC for the sole purpose of avoiding local taxes is wrong. If you love the tax structure of another state that much and don't want to support your current state, move there. A better answer to a LLC is ensuring your local/state authorities are managing money effectively. Owning or property or having vested interests in a state have nothing to do with your state of residence. Th be a resident of any state all you have to do is meet the residency requirments for that state then follow the required process to declare and anything else is irrelevant. I own deeded property in more than one state and am a legal resident of a state in which I own no property at all. I'd like to see a system whereby US citizens could declare themselves "stateless" (fulltimers) and be required to declare no particular state as a state of residence. As I see it the only reason for the current system of who lives and is a citizen of where is simply a bureacratic scheme to be able to tax us out of existence if they wish. Ron

RE: Montana LLCs under attack in Iowa

When we bought our first DP in 2000 we were residents of Cali. I was advised of all the different ways to avoid Cali taxes but after consulting with the lawyer and accountant I decided to play safe and bite the bullet. We put $20k down and virtually all of it was eaten up by fees and taxes. The sales tax alone was $15k. When wifey retired we sold out of Cali and went on the road seeking a place to plant roots. After a few months of full timing, when it became obvious that we weren't going to find a place right away, we settled on SD because of their tax structure and ease of changing registrations etc. Getting loose of Cali was a genuine b1tch, we spent a month in a CG in Sioux Falls waiting for documentation on our MH and car to come thru so we could change regs. They also were constantly hounding us over income taxes and we had to get the lawyer to write them a letter then they relented for about a year and then came back threatening to seize property etc. I wrote back telling them "good luck" because we have no property or accounts etc in Cali for them to seize!!! Things are quiet now but we still check to make sure that Cali hasn't gone berserk and put out a warrant on us before we visit the state. When we bought our current DP we registered it in SD and had no problems since. There was an excise tax of 3% of the difference between our purchase price and the value of our trade in. That was very manageable and reasonable. I've watched the evolution of the situation with Montana LLCs for a few years now and at present I'm happy I didn't do it back it 2000. When times get tough the bureaucrats and pols find it very effective to chase down and prosecute "cheaters" and to pass legislation to change the status of previously legal folks to "cheats". This looks good to the average Joe out there and allows the Pols and bureaucrats to do a bit of chest thumping when justifying their existence. I sometimes wonder if the money expended to maintain the systems and other apparatus to catch a few cheaters is coming anywhere near paying for itself. Ron

RE: Montana LLCs under attack in Iowa

There are a few places in Cali that I've driven my MH and will never again due to horrible rough road. One of the very worse is I 80 from Sacto to Reno. Another is the 101 from San Jose to 680 to 580 to 205 and 5 thru Stockton. There are places that you can't go over 40 mph without losing your I teeth. Ron I know I am in danger of incurring the wrath of those who don't think they should pay their share of highway maintenance, but here goes: In most states, where does the bulk of the registration monies go? Highway maintenance. In those states that allow llC's (or the like), where does the monies go? GENERAL FUND. Check it out yourself. The last time I drove I-90 in Montana, and into North Dakota, I thought I was going to be shaken to death! Much worse than in CA!Much worse than in CA! Now, I am not excusing those states that don't use registration monies as they are supposed to (Yes, CA is one of them) Since the LLC's are a blatant effort by the owner of the affected vehicle to avoid their share of the burden, I have no sorrow when they get caught. Youmake it hard for me to travel down the highway because of shirking your responsibility. If you think Iowa is the only state going after Montana, you aren't paying attention. Many, many states loosing reveue are passing laws to prevent states like Montana and ND from reaping in unearned monies. Now, the next time you drive down a highway (Interstate) in CA or AZ and you want to start cussing them for not maintaining their highways, think about the number of rigs passing you or being passed that are registered in those "easy" states. As one poster said, Oregon is ruthless in going after those registering vehicles in their state where the RO does not live there. And believe me, the fine when you get caught there is tremendous. Register your rig legally and morally correctly and you will never have to worry about getting caught and having to pay double or triple what it would have cost you in your home state. By the way, I hate paying the high registration in CA.

Montana LLCs under attack in Iowa

Iowa is now among the states trying to recover lost revenue due to Montana LLCs. http://www.rvbusiness.com/2013/03/iowa-bill-aimed-at-rv-registration-fee-evasion/

RE: Onan 7500 QD sensor replacement

By the way, here's where I found the sensor, http://www.anyrvparts.com/FindaProduct.asp?ProductDescription=193-0318 They were close by in Chino, Ca so I simply drove over there and picked it up. Ron

RE: Onan 7500 QD sensor replacement

Since this seems to be a high faiolure item I'm going to try and remove/install it every year to see if I can avoid the ordeal of busting it up to get it out. On mine the factory used some kind of sealant on it too. That didn't make it any easier. I also suggest that you take care not to overtighten the nut that holds the wire on. You could rotate the post and break the coil loose. Ron

RE: Onan 7500 QD sensor replacement

I recently changed the temp sensor on my 7500 QD. Mine is on a slide so access to the unit was easy. The hard part was getting the old one out. The sensor is on the water pump housing and is a hex nut type which is only about 1/8" deep. The height of the unit is such that the wire connecting post on top keeps a standard socket from fitting over it far enough to get proper leverage on it without rounding the hex. You need a six point deep socket to get on it with the leverage necessary. Another issue is that there is a fiberglass shroud that obstruct access to the unit so that you can't get a deep socket on it. I simply cut out the shroud so as to get access with the deep socket. In the end I had to use a breaker bar to get it loose using the tighten til move slightly then loosening technique. As it is it came out in three pieces and I'd suggest you remove the thermostat and stuff a rag in the hole to keep parts of it from getting into the water pump if it fragments like mine did. Mine had a problem with no preheat that made it hard starting in cold weather. Now it works great but I hope I'm done with that area of the beast. Ron

RE: Allison transmission

Read this thread. http://www.irv2.com/forums/f125/former-allison-transmission-fluids-engineer-89293.html I had mine (Transynd) checked sfter 95k and it checks out as new. All I'm going to do is change the filters at the mileage intervals called for and have the fluid analyzed. When it shows signs of failure I'll change it. Ron

RE: Flapping Topper

We are having trouble with the wind here in Texas causing our slide topper to flap quite violently.Short of retracting the slide out is there any way to remedy this problem. We have heard about using 3/4 PVC pipe & tie downs but cannot find any info on this. Can anyone suggest a fix for this? George A few years back I was hearing that folks were putting beach balls under the canvas to tighten it up. Don't know how they were inserted or retrieved. Ron

RE: looking at a 2000 safari zanzibar

Our first DP was a 2000 Zanzi. It had a 300 3126b Cat Allison 3060 trans and 22.5 tires. Ours was the single slide model with air suspension and air over hydraulic brakes. They also built them with the Velvet ride suspension which was rubber encased torsion system that used no air bags. Ron

RE: Motorhome Fire

Bingo. For larger rigs with room for a couple extra batteries I can't think of a downside to a residential yet. I converted our 04 HR Imperial from the Norcold 1200 to a Samsung in Oct 2011. I did not add batteries or an additional inverter. We've since gone from Mo to Calif and back, then to SD, Ohio, Maine, DC and back to Mo. We are now in Calif again and have had no issue with the battery capacity or anything else with the Samsung refer. We also spent 1 week boondocking in Quartzsite last Jan. I did the conversion myself. I decided to do the conversion when the first recall on the 1200 failed and after having the new one done, it failed too. There is a report of a class action suit against Norcold over the issue. We'll see how it shakes out. The only folks that get any real money from these class actions are the lawyers but it serves to shed light on the issue. Ron

RE: Planning on going to Quartzsite in a couple weeks

We stayed at Holiday Palms just west of 95 & Business 10 two weeks ago. Full hookups in a pull thru $32.73. They have activities at nite and restaurants are in walking distance. If you want to try boondocking, the major BLM sites are north and south on 95. We've boondocked for a week at both the areas and do like the solitude. This time of year there are literally thousands of RVs out the desert so it may be a bit crowded. There are also many brand related groups that meet there too. Ron

RE: Stops

Wallys can be noisy and the truck drivers will sometimes try to make sure you don't get any sleep. That coupled with all the engines running in the parking areas of FJ's etc I wouldn't stop there. Rest stops are OK but be sure to check your rig before you leave in the A/M to make sure none of your tow gear was messed with. Ron

RE: Samsung Ventilation

Mine (RF197) has the cooling fan in the bottom, drawing air in the bottom rear an out the bottom rear. I didn't leave any of the outside vents used by the Notcold open, I sealed them both. We've used the refer continuously since install, 11/2011, and have had no ill effects. There is a headspace at the top of the unit of about 2" and to the sides and rear it is 1" to the sides and about 3" to the rear. Be sure and install the rear panel as it was delivered. I almost left mine off thinking it would improve circulation but noticed that it forms part of the duct that channels air thru the cooling system. Ron

RE: Residential Refrig Question

Our Samsung RF197 works great on a MSW inverter. It has been on for the entire year it has been installed. We did boondock for a couple of weeks and except for getting the generator running in cold weather we had no problems. Ron 04 HR Imperial

RE: 30 + 20 = 50?

Something else to remember when you're using a"cheater" box that connects a 30 and a 20 to your coach. Your EMS will detect the two circuits as 50a per line and allow you to overdraw the circuits accordingly. You have to become the EMS as it will not regulate your power draw. You then run the risk of popping the pedestal breaker. Ron

RE: Runaway Monaco in Colter Bay

Sounds more like the guy forgot to set the park brake when he stopped and leveled. As for loss of air, that locks air brakes not releases them. The dog would have to be pretty heavy to release the brake and there would have had to have pressure in the air system. If he has air leveling (using the air bags to level instead of jacks) there is an aux air pump to keep pressure on the system for adjusting level due to leakage. I've tested mine, after parking on a slight slope, engine off, I set the park brake and dumped the air in the system. I then released the park brake and it didn't move. I then aired up the system and released the brake again and the coach rolled. If the dog really did release it I'd suggest that the guy make a guard to cover it while parked. Ron

RE: Where are all the Prevosts going?

I found this Prevost information, it might be a clue Prevost events We saw them on I40 so I suspect they were going to the NASCAR race at Bristol Tn. Ron

RE: Where are all the Prevosts going?

could it be the rigs used by NASCAR drivers returning from MI? Could be. We visited the Childress racing museum in Welcome NC and driving around the "neighborhood" saw a few Prevosts parked. Another thought is entertainers heading for Nashville? Ron
