RE: Surge device comparison

Buy a PI. Surge Guard no longer supplies support once their units are out of warranty.

RE: Surge Protectors

We used one and I slept well because of it. When the voltage drops in a full CG on a 95 degree day in mid September they are worth their weight in gold.

RE: Headers vs oem manifolds

There are a lot of junk headers on the market. Stainless headers are not a necessity but coated headers are. What you are looking for in a header is a thick head flange, thick and preferably ball connectors at the collector and a ceramic coating, coated inside and out. Do your home work and make your decision. Not all coated headers are coated inside the pipe.

RE: Brake light issue, stumped.

Back to my previous post. If you have an LED 3rd brake light it most likely is illuminated when the engine brake is on. LED assemblies do not heat up and burn out like conventional bulbs when on for a long period of time. Ask CC if they turn the 3rd brake light on with the engine brake and work from there. A quick check is to turn the EB on and see if the 3rd BL illuminates. If it does the switching relay to turn it back in to a conventional brake light is bad or not seeing the appropriate switching signal.

RE: Brake light issue, stumped.

At lot of RVs turn the center brake light on when the engine brake is activated. Your problem could be caused by the switching relay or whatever type of switch device CC uses to turn on the CBL with EB activation or add it back to the brake light switch circuit.

RE: 2004 ISL

You climbed through the Appalachians, across the plains (WINDY) and over the Rockies/Cascades,etc and you expect the same mileage as someone who traveled relatively flat roads (comparatively) to get to the same spot. Go ahead and call Cummins. I am sure the customer service reps need a good laugh. Their days are usually spent dealing with screamers.

RE: Batteries making my rig lean?

Park it on level ground and measure to the frame rails at spots that are easily duplicated on each side. Measure front and rear. If it is with in 1" you are fine. If it is 1.5 to 2"s you might want to do something about it. Never spend money until you determine you actually have a problem.

RE: changing hubs

When it comes to Ford differentials you need the tag number. There will be a tag that identifies which differential you have. It was and still may be for the same model Ford truck to have one of 3 or 4 differentials in it. The tag will be mounted on one of the pumpkin or cover bolts. Get the number and remove all possibilities of wrong parts.

RE: Tightening Motorhome Lugs

I have always used a 2', 3/4" breaker bar. I stand on the end and that gives me 400 ft/#s. I then give a small hop and they are tightened close enough to never come loose or stress the threads on the studs. Sometimes the members of this forum flat over think things.

RE: Battery Tender issue - please advice

I use BT JRs, .75A, on everything. I would pull the RV in to the shop/garage, turn off the disconnects and plug in the 2 BT JRs. They always made it to green and I never worried about how long it took. If we were going to be parked in a RV park for any period of time I would just turn off the chassis battery disconnect and plug in that BT JR. I never worried if they went to float in 72 hours or if they made it to green. It has always started and the chassis batteries were always ready to go when it came out of storage.

RE: To close for comfort

I lost two well pump controllers and a pump to lightning strikes at the house. I plugged a standard surge protector into the outlet for the pump controller and have not had a problem since. I can not tell you if the lightning strikes we have had recently were as severe or near as the ones that caused last years damage but one 3 weeks ago sounded like a direct hit on the well casing. I know it was not but it was as close to the house as any of the earlier strikes that caused controller death.

RE: gm 8.1 engine

As the engine manufacturers started using light tension ring packages to reduce rotational loss there was a slight increase in oil consumption and the best way out of this situation was to issue a statement about miles/quart. One of the major American manufacturers started looking in to oil consumption very seriously when their warranty claims started to increase dramatically. The most prevalent cause of increased oil consumption was the use of different oil suppliers or going to Econo Lube and then Jiffy Lube and then the local independent because of price. This company then ran a long term test, mileage and chemical analysis, and came to the conclusion that switching from one oil to another had a definite impact on increased oil consumption and the reason was the difference in additive packages. The chemical analysis found that the additive packages used by different oil companies would actually "fight" each other and the oil consumption increased dramatically. During the test the most interesting observation was the decrease in consumption after 2 to 3 oil changes when using the same oil. I personally experienced this 6 to 7 months after reading this study when I changed from a Pennzoil product to Kendall D-3 at my shop. A large number of customers complained of increased oil consumption which then decreased dramatically with the next oil change. Modern science, what an amazing headache at times.

RE: Exhaust manifold gaskets / Ford 460

If you have the D shaped port you need a Remflex 3013. This gasket fits 93-98 Ford 460s. I am not affiliated with Remflex but I worked part time in a speed shop waiting for my wife to retire and none of them ever came back for a warranty replacement. Some came back because the individual did not know which head or header he had but never for burn out when installed in the correct application.

Try some Remflex gaskets. You will never go back to FelPro, etc.

RE: gm 8.1 engine

My guess is an over filled engine. The OP says he has to add oil every 900 miles but does not say how much. If it is between the marks it does not need oil!

RE: DP U-Joint Maintenance & Lifespan?

Most diesel's have a 5,000 mile grease interval for the driveshaft u-joints. A u-joint cup accelerates and decelerates 64 times/revolution. This accel/decel cycling does not change with driveshaft length. I would replace or have the u-joints replaced and then check the pinion angle to make sure your engine or trans mounts (if you have any) are not sagged. You want the angle difference to be 3 degrees or less. Why replace what may be good u-joints? Because if you do not you will have that nagging question bouncing around your head, harshing your mellow, as you drive down the road.

RE: 1999 Ford V10 Loping at Idle (Help)

Pull the intake boot, hold open the throttle and clean the sludge off the walls of the throttle body. Also pull the idle valve and if it is dirty clean the slide. If the throttle body is restricted enough the idle valve starts to over compensate and ends up oscillating.
