RE: To Fifth wheel from Class A with toad
I have had them all...but a travel trailer...tent, popup, Class C motor home, 2 Class A gas motor homes and a 36 foot Diesel Pusher...now a 35 foot Big Horn fiver.
I, too, never thought I would like another type of RV after going to Class A and a Diesel Pusher motor home. I towed Jeep Grand Cherokee's behind my motor home's...life was good.
I now think differently. The motor homes sat for long periods between long trips. We did make some short trips. When the girls were smaller, the motor homes made travel easier.Today, that has changed.
Now there is just the two of us...and the wunderdachshund...I find hooking up to the fiver no more time consuming than hooking up the Jeeps behind the motor homes. My last motor home was very nice...this Big Horn is just as nice...and has a lot more room...and livability. The tow vehicle is my daily driver and I see no big disadvantage in that regard.
Because of the ease of towing, relative ease of parking the rig and the excellent livability of the fiver, we will likely be in fivers until we stop camping.

I have consistently stated that the 6.7 HPFP issue will not slow down truck sales by any significant amount. You are right, 151 lost sales are not many in the overall scheme...but it represents more than $7.5 million in lost revenue and over $1.5 million in lost profits...not an insignificant number to the working man...

RE: New record !
Ben, You are exactly correct. And this is the real crux of the issue. One helluva lot bigger a problem than a warranty issue. Because once one of those babies craps out in that scenario, no warranty is going to bring back any lost lives.
That is a Bosch problem. And a VW/Porsche, Ford, GM, problem too. But primarily a Bosch engineering issue.
And Ricactic and a few others have brought it out in the forefront. As it should be. No argument there.
The following is not directed at your post. Just for editorial comment is all.
I bought a $70,000 trailer that is a POS. I mean a real POS. Some issues that make it very unsafe on the highway. Did I try killing the company, because I got a Monday morning edition? Did I write all over internet forums how poor the company treated me. Did I call others names, that enjoy their similar trailers. Did I berate them? Did I accuse them of blindly following along? Did I post other threads where others had similar problems that were out of warranty...but shame on the manufacturer for not repairing the damage?
That is where my problem is. When the discussion loses fact, it becomes vitriol. There is a crusade and a personal vendetta. But worst of all, the message becomes lost. That is a dis-service. And one that reduces the good service to a bad service.
If that is drinking Kool-aid, I'll need a refill.
End of rant.
You are starting to sound like a true blue Ford Fan Boy...no disrespect intended. Why do I say this...because like the true Blue KoolAid crowd I reference, you are adding meaning out of context to much of what I write. If you spent much time over at the Blue KoolAid site, you would understand who I really am referencing.
When someone jumps into a conversation with only attacking the messenger in mind with no sense of the actual facts, they deserve to be called out. When that happens to a true Blue KoolAid fan, they then further the personal attacks and then cry to the moderators. This has happened to many unhappy 6.7 owners on that site. I have several emails from owners who will not bother to post there because of the immediate assignment of "troll" to their thread. The bully's over there, encouraged by moderator censorship, chase away any real discussion about the 6.7 and it's problems.
You seem to be terribly offended that I posted the recent thread from there. You keep bringing up "warranty demands" that I made regarding that particular event. I was well aware that the poor soul was miled out. I never expected for Ford to warranty that repair...why would I, they will not warranty HPFP failures with less than 50,000 miles without a huge fight. You were still missing the point...until the post quoted here.
You have decided that I am the bad guy for keeping the heat on Ford and fighting back against those that would try to avoid seeing the facts and blindly follow the Blue Oval. I would like to see where I have personally called anybody names or slammed their choices in either truck or trailer. You have a 6.7 and I wish you well...and Troy also...
You have made a decision to not publicize or criticize your trailer manufacturer for what you call is a POS product. If that fits your style, good for you. But if you truly have a POS and just walk away from it, you help no one else to avoid a similar situation. That is not my style. I have a voice and when I have been done right, I tell everyone my story...B&W hitches for instance...conversely, when I am done wrong, I do my best to make sure others are not taken advantage of in a similar fashion.
You can call me a crusader or a vindictive SOB if you wish, but the interaction with dozens of members from this site and hundreds of emails thanking me for my stand tell me you are in the minority.Just look at this thread to see how many disagree with you...
The current sales kill count has grown to 151...that's a lot of lost money for 1 rejected warranty claim...

RE: New record !
We must admit here on the tow vehicle forum, shoot the forum in whole, that we are by far just a tiny fractional percentage of total diesel vehicles being used here in North America right now.
And yet, and seemingly against the odds due to our small numbers, we have still suffered two confirmed failures of the Ford HPFP. Most of you remember Ricatic, but there was also a Canadian poster on here who had the same problem.
I PM'd this Canadian poster. He related to me that Ford tried their trump card, water in fuel routine with his vehicle also. Unfortunately for Ford, they had also just recently changed out the fuel filters for this vehicle. Based on this evidence, within their own (Ford's) maintenance records, Ford did in fact, begrudgingly, warranty the HPFP replacement and all assorted costs associated to the replacement, on his vehicle.
So that is two, as I said, from an amazingly small sample of operators.
I want info on this. I own one of these 6.7L Ford diesels.
My biggest fear is that someone, somewhere, is going to be hurt badly or worse by the sudden failure of these pumps. As they seem to die suddenly, without any measurable warning symptoms, I can see someone, attempting to merge onto a busy interstate, having his vehicle chug and die just as he leaves the on ramp and arrives in the traffic lanes, with an 18 wheeler bearing down on him from astern.
It won't be a happy ending or a pretty picture.
Norsky
You have hit the ball out of the park...but I was surprised that I had to be remembered...:B:B:B
Seeing that I am one of the owners that has experienced the dieing of a 6.7 Ford HPFP, I can assure you that your semi-doomsday scenario is very possible. When the Bosch CP4 HPFP died on my truck, it just shut down like I turned off the key...just as I made a right turn off the freeway exit ramp onto a busy highway. There is no warning...it just quits.
If this indeed happens to someone towing a trailer as they merge onto a freeway, they are toast. You lose the power steering and the power brakes. Your 18 wheeler scenario will become a nightmare...This is why the NHTSA needs to keep pressuring the manufacturers who use this delicate pump to fix the problem...we know from experience that it does not take any water to destroy the pump and a few ounces of water will take it out even quicker. The water separator/water in fuel indicator is useless. It takes 7 ounces of water in the DFCM before it reaches the WIF switch.

RE: New record !
For some reason Ricatic feels threatened and gets on the Kool aid topic a tad bit, and probably has been banned at the other site like his HPFP expert that he brought to this site (won't mention that name :R). I for one spared with Rick when I thought the 6.0 psd was a POS and Rick challenged me many times. Turned out his truck went teets up and mine ran like a champ for over 170k miles with no real issues known when I sold it.
I don't mind Rick slurping all the Kool Aid rhetoric that's just his style, but when I point out issues "Including the Gold Standard LBZ" engine the slurping Kool Aid goes to another level.
Again I don't mind discussing issues with all our trucks as long as they are facts, but Rick has a crusade so you have to take it with a grain of salt.
And just so everyone knows before the slurping the Kool Aid threat is issued to me via Rick, I also purchased a Dodge cummins powered truck last year that my cousin spotted for me at the Ford/Chrysler dealship he works at. No big deal...
At a family reunion a few weeks ago we were talking about what's going on at his shop, and he gave me the same report as Christmas and he has only replaced one injector on a Ford 6.7 truck and no HPFP have been replaced to date at this shop. He originally specialized in Ford Diesels since '93 and because the repairs of the 6.7 PSD have dropped so much he has been trained to now work on the RAM Cummins truck particularly the 6.7 Cummins. He's had Chrysler void several cummins HPFP and Ford voided 6.4 HPFP do to fuel contamination and some are covered under warrenty (ie Fords 6.4 HPFP has an issue over time becoming weak and not producing proper fuel pressure so it get's replaced). He also commented to get a warrenty approval from Chrysler is alot more red tape than Ford.
In the meantime I'll continue to enjoy my Ford 6.7 psd Super Duty that provides great fuel economy, towing ability, comfort, and all the creature comforts that it provides. I'm at 21k miles and not one glitch. Love it...:C
Troy
You are being flat out disingenuous with the nonsense in this post.
Let's start with your allegation that I feel threatened. By whom or by what? My posting of facts regarding the issues that some Ford 6.7 owners are facing certainly raises the ire of Fiord Fan Boy's but so what...sometimes the truth hurts.
What is with your allegation of my slurping some kind of GM Koolaid? Other than my signature, I have seldom mentioned the fact that even the diesel truck magazines regard the LBZ Duramax engine as the best buy in a used diesel truck. I have not implored that anyone buy a GM Duramax over the Cummins powered Ram. Is mentioning that if you want a new truck but not a Ram you need to buy a GM because they warranty their fuel systems not providing facts?
But your biggest dose of disingenuous comes in your constant dragging GM and Ram HPFP failures due to verified water or other contaminates in the fuel resulting in a warranty denial. You misrepresent my position every time you make those claims. I have never taken the position that obvious mis-fueling errors or large amounts of water in the fuel should be automatically covered under warranty. Quite the contrary, I stated very early in my battle that if water was in the fuel, I would not be asking Ford to fix the truck but would work with my fuel supplier or my insurance company. This statement was made before the final denial was issued.
I am pleased that you have had such good service from your trucks. If I had service like that I would certainly leave that manufactuer high on my list. But alas, many others, including my family, have had that manufacturer turn it's back on loyal customers...and therein lies the problem...May all the truck owners out there have good luck with their truck...but to claim you would act so differently if confronted with a similar problem is not too believable...

RE: Bed saver and B & W companion hitch
I always knew that I was "extraordinarily rare" :D. I am one of those that due to "negligence", did drop my 5er with the companion hitch. I was in the middle of hooking up, started talking to my son about something else and didn't latch the hitch. I went to pull forward some and boom. It only put a dent in my tailgate and didn't damage the bed or 5er luckily. I haven't bought a bedsaver, but, I guarantee that my hitch is at least triple checked ever since then.
rconkin
I am curious...when you backed into the hitch, did you notice that the locking handle was completely closed? This is a serious question, not a kick at you when you are down.
The reason I ask is because of the way the B&W self closes the locking handle. With that big solid steel cam completely rotated into the locked position, I am curious how the fiver got loose from the jaws just pulling the fiver a few feet...

I am truly sorry ricactic can't get over his situation. Says he is helping others. He is the one that may need help. Obvious to me he just wants to hurt Ford every chance he gets.
Vulcaneer...
Your Ford Fan Boy membership is really showing. You have a 2012 6.7 Ford and I truly wish you the best of luck with the truck. I always feel bad for the guys that are having issues with their trucks no matter which brand. As I mentioned to the Gypsy, you do not know me either. Your constant suggestions that I may need help are a bit humorous. There are many here that have had the opportunity to actually meet me or talk to me on the phone. Not one of them would support your "Rick needs help" allegation...but your perception of my desire to prevent other potential buyers of the Ford 6.7 from walking into possible problems without any knowledge is correct...and if it hurts the manufacturer, so be it. They are only looking out for themselves.
My emails are full of satisfied purchasers of any brand but Ford that thank me for pointing the finger of truth at the 6.7 Ford engine and particularly Ford's callous disregard of the very people who have fueled their sales success. You may be a lifelong Ford customer who has had good service from Ford. Good for you...but if you believe you are immune to a similar event to mine...you are whistling past the graveyard...

RE: Bed saver and B & W companion hitch
Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone that has a B & W companion hitch has a bed saver, Or has ever dropped their trailer on their beds with a companion hitch?
Thanks
Mike
Yes...I do...when I bought my first tow vehicle, it had the B&W Turnover Ball already installed. I ordered the Companion because it was the best way to go. I also ordered and had the bed saver installed at the same time. The entire package was included in my fiver deal.
After owning the Companion for a short period of time, I reached the conclusion that the Bed Saver, while nice insurance, was really not needed. It is impossible to high hitch the Companion. If the locking lever close completely when you back under the fiver and you can put the safety pin in the locking lever, it is hitched...period. Only a catastrophic failure of the huge wrap around hitch jaws would cause a lost connection...I have never heard of such a failure...
If I was buying a B&W Companion today, I would skip the Bed Saver...but because I already have it, I will keep it...call it cheap insurance against a failure with almost a zero chance of occurring...

I believe fighting a big corporation would cost a bit more than $13k :W
Really? Cause in the warranty book of Ric's 2011 (available at the Ford Fleet site for recent Fords), you can use the BBB Auto Line program which is arbitration for free. If it is as cut and dry as Ric claims I'd head there first. BBB Auto Line
I'd encourage those with legitimate complaints to use this service.
itguy08
You have missed or misunderstood the timeline of my HPFP Shameful Event which is understandable. When the truck first went down and the first dealer made two different repairs under the auspices of warranty, I still spilled the KoolAid. It was not until 3 weeks after the breakdown that the final decision to not warranty my truck came down from Ford World headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.
Because Ford was adamant that water caused the failure, despite proof to the otherwise, my comprehensive insurance coverage stepped up, even though they believed Ford was in the wrong, and they paid the bill less the deductible, the cost of filters and the fuel. This placed the recovery into the insurance companies hands. The last I heard they had sent a bill to Ford...I do not know the outcome.
Before anyone leaps to the conclusion that the insurance company was misled...they were not. The adjuster and I looked at all the parts and discussed the claim. He made the decision to cover the failure. At that time the problem was relatively new. After Ford and GM were dragged into the NHTSA investigation, getting this repair covered became much more difficult.
Huntindog posted earlier in the thread. He is a GM guy who adamantly refused to believe that GM was having similar CP4 failure rates as Ford. The NHTSA report laid that position to rest. The "Dog" was the first person I remember purchasing Mechanical Breakdown Insurance from Geico. We now know the actuaries at Geico are onto the Ford warranty scam concerning Bosch CP4 HPFP failures. The insurance premium for identical MBI coverage for a Ford 6.7 diesel is almost 300% higher than for a GM twin using the same pump...and we all know the insurance companies cover their rear ends...
Just the facts...I do not make them up...I just report them

RE: New record !
I cannot understand all the diehard Ford guys beating up on Ric. He was totally mistreated by Ford and you guys think thats ok.You stand behind Ford and post meaningless refs to other companys showing their shortcomings. That is not the point. All manufacturers can have issues, its how you handle the problem!Ford dropped the ball and stuck it to him big time. If they get away with it,they will keep doing it.I for one would like to hear about this so I can make my own decisions and would like to know when a manufacturer has issues and how they handle it.Some of you need to get a grip.
:B:B:B...Bluhorn gets it big time...but the beatings will continue but to no avail...the beatings are mostly feeble attempts by fanatics intoxicated by the Blue KoolAid attempting to validate a position that they would never hold if the Shameful Ford Event comes calling on them...I do not mind because my goal is to help the readership on this great site understand that there are significant perils out there for Ford 6.7 diesel owners...
That last sentence would cause a riot over at the Blue KoolAid forum...personal attacks and criticisms would race to the forefront. A 6.7 forum moderator would censor the post and then chastise the poster for no longer owning a 6.7 Ford...all the while not owning one himself...
In my closed thread, I sincerely stated my wishes that I could communicate with the unfortunate OP on the linked Blue KoolAid site thread. He is being forced to set his expensive truck to the side because the known cost of fixing the "delicate" HPFP, Porsche's description of the same pump used in their high line Cayenne,is over $10,000. I have the personal email from the 6.7 design engineer describing his take on fixing the truck for significantly less cost. My opinion on the issue, although respectfully submitted, has been deemed unwelcome over there...it upsets the Blue KoolAid boys...so be it...how does one spell hypocrisy???
Hopefully that unfortunate OP will find the answers he needs...

Congrats on the new record for the shortest living thread Ric, this ONE only lasted like 9 hours shattering Andy's 12 hour record :B
I might mention Ric also hold the highest non sticky post count that I know of, thanks to Ben, Larry and ninebikers :R
Interesting part is, well it's the same subject.
Just me but I would have given it a little more lead before the dreaded closed sign came out :W
Rick
I am not a bit surprised that the thread was closed...the Ford Fan Boy's had to pound the thread with misleading commentary and even name calling..but they succeeded in getting the thread closed down
To those who only gleaned the fact that the poor OP on that sad thread was out of miles for warranty missed the real point. At the risk of upsetting them again, it's about the poor HPFP design and Ford's unwillingness to acknowledge the same facts that every other manufacturer with Bosch CP4 pumps has recognized.
...and to the poor soul who still thinks there was water in my fuel...there was none...not one drop was found by the dealer that eventually fixed the truck.
...and then we have the Blue KoolAid king showing up to post completely irrelevant information regarding GM failures. He does not understand the difference between CP3 and CP4 pumps. For his benefit...the CP3 pump can fail...but it does not take out $10,000 worth of collateral damage parts without warning like the CP4
It is likely the thread closing specialists will attack and try to close this one too...

Just remember the one famous quote of " bunch of old blow hard's over on RV.net" :W or was it windbags...

IIRC, I will humbly apologize again for misdirected comments like "pompous windbags"...you know my grandmother always said " fools never change their minds".
I do enjoy the sideline psychiatric diagnoses and remedial advice...but Mark has it right...My goal is to warn others of the potential pitfalls of owning a 6.7 Ford. There is no time consuming obsession with the posting of the news...it is merely using my hobby time to help others...if you are a Blue KoolAid consumer, just block my posts...I do not mind because Blue KoolAid drinkers can not be helped...until the real poison it is attacks them...now that is an obsession
Meanwhile, I am going to the Tiger game...got a screaming deal on some seats behind home plate...maybe Cabrera, Fielder and Martinez can go back to back to back :B

Warning...Warning...More Blue KoolAid needed ASAP
...and another one bites the dust...but do not despair...at least not until it happens to you
Since the moderators over at the Blue KoolAid site decided that protecting the big lie was more important than the truth, I only get the news from there when someone sends me an interesting link. Here is today's Big Gulp of the Blue KoolAid:
Another 6.7 Ford HPFP bites the dust...$13,000 repair estimate
I would really like to help this guy understand how he can lower the cost of his now "fix it in my garage" repair but my telling the truth over there has made me persona non grata. When my HPFP failed, the design engineer for the 6.7 engine gave me counsel on how he would fix it if he was paying out of his pocket.
Maybe he will find this thread?????
What I find interesting is the thought process that prevails over there. The discussion immediately veers off into extended warranty, mechanical breakdown insurance and how can an owner protect himself from this problem...and then call it no problem...duplicity at it's finest. With every additional mile that the 6.7 Ford travels, more and more big ticket items are failing...just like the old sages here worried about earlier in the game. Look's like the Beta testing is continuing...I am so glad my POS Ford 6.7 is gone...

There has been a problem with the DEF system and the sensors on the Ford 6.7 diesel...The Blue KoolAid forums have many posts about this issue. The POS 6.7 Ford I just traded away had the CEL on more than it was off...
If the OP is lucky, he will end up at a dealer that can fix it...but they are few and far between...
