RE: Just passing along some prayers for the midwest

I'm sitting here, just outside of Boston, eating dinner, and watching the Weather Channel.....it's a relatively nice day! I'm watching what is left of Moore, OK, and the surrounding area, where it WASN'T a nice day today:( The place is leveled...and the Tornado was probably going to be classified as an EF-5 (the most powerful storm, with 200+ mph winds), and from the video they are showing, it looks like it! Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those people (RVers or not) who live in that area. And hoping that these storms dissipate, before any more damage or lose of life can occur. We have our Hurricanes down in NC (I live right on the coast), but at least we have some notice as to what is coming, and can generally get away if we feel strong enough about the size of it. These Twisters in OK, well, they just drop down and destroy the place, with only moments to realize it.All the best to all of you. I'm from the Midwest and yes they are to be feared and damage is always extensive. Thank God over the years new forecasting equipment sometimes can give us 10 or 15 minutes notice. Sadly that doesn't help at night when everyone is sleeping. Tornadoes hit 2 of the homes I owned and one touched down in a CG I was at. I'll take hurricane states any day over tornado states. At least you have several days warning to prepare or evacuate. I pray that the people in the path of this storm will have taken heed from this weather forecast and have prepared to take cover quickly and safely and we don't have to read of any more weather related fatalities.

RE: Inside Cover for Shower Skylight

Can't find the link but one forum member had the best idea. He cut a piece of solid colored plexi and the way he affixed it was IMHO ingenious. He took the existing screws out from the skylight frame and added those mirror clips to it, put the screws back in. So when he wanted to add the cover all he did was flip the mirror clips over it to hold it in place. Easy up and easy out and no holes drilled into anything. Me, I haven't gotten around to doing it that way just yet so I just bought the 'removable' limo tint from Walmart. Cut it to fit Spray soapy water on it and the skylight and put up and squeegee out the bubbles. Because I have an split bathroom open floor plan the sun coming thru that skylight was baking the MH in summer. Limo tint up and the temp in the MH dropped 20 degrees.

RE: Maps with counties and/or cities & Interstates

Yup the first time I had tornado warnings and had no idea what county I was traveling thru, that sent me flying to get a county map! :B Just plug in county map of 'whatever state' on google. And then print. Until I found an atlas with them that is what I did. Believe it or not the 'best' atlas's I found are at Kangaroo Gas Stations. It is the only place I can find real LARGE print atlas's. The print is bigger than any brand name maps I have bought. BTW: If you are traveling thru Georgia you NEED a county map to know which way to go to avoid bad weather!! I have never seen a state with SO many counties. :C http://www.digital-topo-maps.com/county-map/georgia-county-map.gif :E

RE: Getting creative with limited space

I am about 5 months away from starting full timing. I have been slowly getting ready for over a year now. I am starting to realize just how tight it's going to be in my little ol' Class B motorhome. As such, I am having to come up with low cost but very effective ways of making use of every inch of space..... I don't have a B but basically almost all RV's lack for storage space. It took me a couple of months to realize that I was hanging on to old habit of grocery shopping like when I was back home. Buying a lot of staples for future use 'every' time I shopped. What I did was change my grocery shopping ways. Since we are on the road and usually stop prior to getting to the next CG for fresh items I 'stopped' buying additional staples each time that filled up cabinet space. I now only buy what I plan on eating. This freed up 2 over head cabinets that I stored my staples in for other items.

RE: Scooters

Ditto on that most parks, CG's do not allow motorized bikes. I traveled with some people that had those small electric bikes. The DH had some physical disabilities that prohibited him from walking long distances. His electric bike had three wheels i.e. trike and the DW had the 2 wheel one. This enabled both of them to get out of the RV everyday and enjoy the outdoors. They run around 200 less if you find them on ebay. I have a regular bike I carry with me in the RV and I am thinking of replacing it with one of those electric scooters. Keep in mind though that they are not as light as you would think. My senior friends did have difficulty lifting them to put inside the MH.

RE: RV Net Forums & Other Forums

Truth is... why would I need anything but the TC forum? The day you break down with maybe an electrical or water problem and none of your TC friends have had that problem and a person with a "different but most definitely does have the same guts" type of RV or 'snobs' as you call them 'has' had that problem and could of helped you. :R

RE: HELP! What does this NEWB need?!

Congrats on your new RV! :C Do yourself a real big favor out the gate and buy a Rhino Sewer Hose Kit. Kit has a great collapsible type sewer hose and 'all' the connections you will ever need for CG hookups and requirements. Then find yourself RV dealerships in your area. They all have parts/supplies stores within the dealerships. You can pick up all the stuff you need there and not have to pay for internet shipping charges. AND the best part is you can scope out all the 'RV stuff' that IS available all in one place with a clerk that can answer all your questions. Happy Camping!

RE: So what's your take on this article?

A 3/2 block home on 1.5 ac for $25,000...yup I can live with that. I can't replace my MH for that figure.:C This is comparing apples to oranges. The closest equivalent of a home would be a park trailer on a lot, or a 5-er, or a travel trailer. You can get a new travel trailer for 10K, and I don't mean one-axle box. And I'm sure you can replace a pickup for under 2K. This would still not be the same as a home on 1.5 acre, though location and condition of the 25K home is - usually - not quite the same as 125K one. First of all I'd sure like to know where you can buy a new truck for under 2K and a new TT for 10K! :B Your statement regarding what a foreclosed home sells for equating to what 'you' think it is worth is incorrect. Have you looked at houses here in Florida? Unless you have been avidly looking at homes here over the past 2 years you will most likely never be able to wrap your brain around just how low the prices of homes had become and due to the large inventory numbers, how much lower yet the banks were willing to sell them at.....especially when the gov was subsidizing them. Marble floors, pools, 3,000+ sq ft, etc, etc., in upscale neighborhoods going for practically nothing, you couldn't even build them if you owned your own construction company for what they ended up selling for. I find it interesting that some feel the need to question and make accusations without any knowledge about the subject matter. And btw I own a MH not a trailer, and the house is NOT in an undesirable location, is NOT in bad condition and is worth MORE than the 125k you stated it is not comparable to ......AND I will get back to you when I flip it and CAN replace my "MH" with a new one with money to spare from the profit I make. Just like the one I bought last year and sold. :W

RE: Does your insect repellant work?

Don't want Lyme disease or West Nile? Take a trip to a local organic pet store. You will find authentic natural products that actually repel unwanted bugs and insects using only 100% true essential oils and NOTHING more.:C Obviously, if someone is inclined to take their medical advice of the guy that sells them dog food over the advice of the FDA there is nothing I can say that will change their mind. I don't take 'advice' from anyone without research. I seek out products that are safe where they can be purchased is incidental. And if you read my posts I DO read the ACTUAL 'TESTING' REPORTS from FDA reports ad naseum. Not just the label that ends of on the product.

RE: When the Snowbirds are Gone

Last year I decided not to head back north. It WAS very interesting to watch everyone start packing up to leave and one by one they pulled out until I was the only one left in the park! I too was disappointed on how small the sites where in Florida. I was not prepared for that. I had taken my time going down to Florida the first time and all the CG's I stayed at were real nice and roomy. Until I crossed the state line.

RE: Does your insect repellant work?

Dog and horse products have far more REAL natural products. Horse owners do not put up with products that say they are natural and still contain chemicals. That is where the Skin So Soft came into play with owners of horses. I've used it on my horses for years. FDA and the rest of those jokers have made it possible for human products to be labeled to appear all natural and safe when they are not. You won't know what ingredients are toxic and unsafe unless the public took the time to read all the FDA testing prior to approving the product. 99.99% of the population won't read it, which is exactly what they are betting on. Even though it is readily available thru FOIA, and actually now a click away on the internet. Don't want Lyme disease or West Nile? Take a trip to a local organic pet store. You will find authentic natural products that actually repel unwanted bugs and insects using only 100% true essential oils and NOTHING more.:C

RE: So what's your take on this article?

You assume that everyone wants a bigger house to live in. Barb Simply put, NO I don't. And I don't believe I ever typed the words that everyone should have a bigger house. It was PURELY a suggestion on an alternative way to make money for RV'ers that don't have a big pension/savings. And a way to be able to continue RV'ing. I KNOW personally what it is like not to have a big pension sitting there to fund my RV'ing. I lost 35 years worth of hard earned pension right down the toilet when the company closed the doors and spent all the pension money in the process. Fulltiming and Snowbirding is by no means inexpensive. For me I found by pure accident the last trip to Florida that I could take what was left of my meager savings and buy an inexpensive foreclosure and instead of just sitting in my MH in a CG for the winter, I could paint and fix it up and sell it to fill my "RV'ing coffer". Which I want to continue to do until I can no longer travel. Which yes at that time I would like another house to live and die in........which is why I just bought another one as insurance that I will be able to just that when that time comes. Just was 'sharing' what I had discovered as a great investment in Florida. A 3/2 block home on 1.5 ac for $25,000...yup I can live with that. I can't replace my MH for that figure.:C

RE: So what's your take on this article?

Rockhillmanor, Since you see RVs as such horrible purchases :? Can you please explain this accusation? A double wide is NOT an RV. I own an RV and the discussion was regarding buying double wides/manuf/tt's permanently parked on purchased lots in planned communities as an alternative retirement. I simple stated that I found in this depressed market and in Florida one could buy a real house on larger lots that would equate to a much more 'substantial' financial return when sold when the senior became even older and in need of additional health care finances. This was not true years ago. It IS an option in today's market. Sorry you feel the need to tell me I should not be on this forum because I don't share the same views as you do. Real simple answer to that, block my posts. :C

Hmmm, my horses have had a vaccine for West Nile for some years now. Ever wonder why the government hasn't bothered to come up with one for us humans yet?

RE: Living in a Covered RV

I see a couple of problems with living inside an RV with a cover on it. The vent stack for the black tank needs to be open to the air when using the toilet. You will not be able to put up the antenna. The Air Conditioning unit must be open to the air. As will the furnace vent if heating the RV. And if you plan to cook and not die, the stove vent needs to be open to the air. The refrigerator has an outside vent for a reason and it too will need to be open to the air. Going to take a hot shower? Well that vent better be open to the air or the cover and the RV will catch fire and you won't need to know if you can live in an RV with the cover on anymore! :B:B You will be cutting far MORE holes in this cover other than just for a door and window. :W

RE: G.P.S.

What is a good G.P.S. for my motor home one that tells campgrounds and rest areas My TomTom has the ability to alert me if a CG is within (what ever miles I set it for} from where I am presently driving. When the alert goes off I touch the little icon and it takes me to the address and phone number and/or touch directions and it will change my destination route to that CG. I have found many hidden jewels of CG's with my GPS that are not advertised.

RE: Does your insect repellant work?

I guess that's why it's been used over 10,000,000,000 times and no one has noticed an epidemic of neurological problems..... That's because when the symptoms of a neurological and/or breathing disorder present doctors don't ask if you have been using deet. It's not on their list of questions to ask regarding neurological problems. They just throw drugs at the patient to mask the symptoms and it is never documented that it could have been attributed to deet. When was the last time you went to your doctor that he asked if you use deet? When I read warnings from the U.S. National Library of Medicine From the National Institutes of Health National Institutes of Health and other medical findings that show a product IS classified as a poisonous substance and can be harmful, I would think the average educated person would take heed. But apparently many do not. http://i49.tinypic.com/24o3qs0.gif

RE: Dam Box Elders

Yup thankfully Dawn Dish Soap and a little water in a spray bottle takes care of the little buggers without using any harmful chems. Now if only they could come up with a way to get rid of those darn asian ladybug beetles as easily. :(
