RE: House battery question

OK thanks. If a batt is dis connected in basement and kept warm, is there a need to hook it up to a charger once and a while? I often store mine in my shop. And I charge them about once a month during cold weather.. Just left alone a battery will discharge it self over time.. Also If your converter is a Progressive Dynamics you can add the Charge Wizard to it for about 30 bucks and it will tend the bettery if left in the RV with power hooked up. Many others will just cook the battery. I have mine set up that way and may also leave them in the MH and just hook up for a day or two once in a while in the winter. My MH is setting in my front yard 8 feet from my shop so for me its easy..

RE: Looks like it is raining Class C Expedition Vehicles

With a 4 wheel drive, you can get stuck much farther from a paved road than a 2WD. Fred. I had to chuckle when I read this.. We found two rigs like we now have. One 4WD and the 2WD. My wife and I liked both and talked it over. Just what you said became the main point and a reminder of me getting a 4WD rig stuck needing two D6 Cats. One got stuck and had to set until things dryed out to dig it out. Wife won this one. Love our 2WD drive.

RE: Trying to find our Battery disconnect Switch.

Some do not have a disconnect switch and just unhook the ground on the battery. If you did not turn it off or disconnect odds are the battery/s are dead. That would give you just what you have. No real way to know with out checking it..

RE: Boats are RV's?

We stayed on our first boat while traveling. Had a single holding tank and a pump out so we could use it in fresh water lakes. Remember stoping at Disney World in Fla. After looking us over a bit they decided we could not launch in their lakes?? Also always fun when traveling and staying in RV parks. Always lots of questions. 2nd boat was to big and wide for trailering. Did miss that part but loved the extra room, oven, deep freeze, king size beds ect. A part of our lives we will never forget.

RE: Boats are RV's?

We full timed in our boats for 10 years. Always felt they were RV's only better than the land RVs because we could spend time in the Bahamas. Also Great Lakes and down the east coast to Key West.. Also had our Airstream trailer for near 20 years and spent 10 of those full time.. Filp a coin as to whitch we liked best....

RE: Can I Pick Your Brains About Smaller Class C's?

Lots of good reading here. I agree the big thing is driver and passenger comfort. If you can not recline the two seats you will find little comfort. They become your recliners in a small rig. A kitchen that really works is a must usless you eat out every meal. Having a kitchen that is not in the middle of the rig is nice. We went with a rear kitchen. Places to set. A dinette has little setting comfort after a short while so a need for some place else to set. We have a couch which I rebuilt for comfort. I sleep on the couch and its as nice as a bed at home. My wife sleeps on the dinette in comfort after we changed the foam to 7 inch. We do not mind making them up each evening as it only takes a couple min. We use a fleece blanket on the bottom. No need to tuck it in as it stays put. We use very light backpacking sleeping bags unzipped for comforters. Get cold zip them up. To store them we just stuff them in a laundry bag. No folding or rolling just stuff. We keep them in the over head bunk area that we use for storage only. Our bath fits us well and has a place in the shower for me to set. Some thing about being 75 years young.. We have lots of hanging storage and drawers. We have infact added a couple after finding some areas that could have them so made some. We like our small rig because of where we like to go. A bigger rig would mean we would have to give up 60% of the back country we love so much. And yep my wife lets me drive is from time to time.. :-)

RE: 227

thanks - did put (medford to canyonville,or) towing a 24 footer We pulled our 25 foot Airstream over it many times however having 20 - 50 foot drops one foot off the pavement is common for us so no big deal. If you are comfortable with this type of road its a nice trip. Usaly not much traffic. Never think about it when driving it with our small motorhome.

RE: rv cover

I too use the ADCO tyvek on my C. Its minor work to install. I store mine in a garbage can and put the front in last. When ready to install I just tie one of the ropes from the front on my belt and climb the ladder in the rear. Pull it up a little at a time and string it down the middle of the RV. After its all up I spred it out and drop the front and sides. I remove it doing it backward with my wife below to stuff it back in the can. Never picked up the whole thing a once. Takes about 20 min to install alone and about the same to remove. If removing it alone I just push it off one side and then stuff in the garbage can from the rear to front. Mine last about 5-6 years. I use it only in winter because I find it easier to remove the snow when needed. Do not get the push broom tangled up in things.

RE: 227

We have driven it a number of times. Not to bad a road but as stated above it has no shoulders in places so need to keep on the pavement. This however is the way with most of the roads we run in this part of the world. You made no real statement as to your rig size so if you have a MH and much over 26 feet or pulling a trailer I would pass on it.. And if you do not run back roads with no shoulders often then the long drops where the pavment ends can worry you..

RE: 14 years of RVing going tent camping!

My wife and I grew up tenting and still love tent and Popup camping after 43 years together. We had a 25 foot Airstream for about 20 years and other trailers and while owning them we wore out several tents and two popups. We have kept using tents and popups and enjoy them as much as the motorhome we have now. We love the back country and back roads. Still tenting..

RE: Sweet potatoes...am I late to the game?

And how does a person half these things the long way without cutting off a digit or two? Not as hard as you may think.. Place a good size knife where you want to cut. Do not push down to hard and rock the tater back and forth. The kinfe works as a wedge. Not so much cutting it but spliting it..

RE: Sweet potatoes...am I late to the game?

While reading your post I am eating our camp breakfast. Pan fried onions, mushrooms, squash, bell peppers, red beans with chopped up sweet taters served with sausage. We use sweet pototoes most all the time. We usaly peel them and put them in the microwave until most of the way done. Then store them in the fridge. We can slice them and pan fry them in butter. You can add them to most any thing just by cutting them up and serve as a crunchy part of the meal. Also as they are most of the way cooked you can made wedges from them and put in oven and serve as tater wedges. We use only butter, salt, pepper ect on them never any thing sweet.

RE: Awning question what is too much wind

We find when the wind gets much over 15 mph its starting to be a problem to handle. At 20 mph its time to roll it for sure. Much after that there is a good chance it will catch the wind and wrap up over the top. We were at a WBCCI Airstream national meeting some years back with about 1100 Airstreams. Most of us just rolled when leaving our rigs as habit. About 300 did not and there were about 300 awings replaced because of one wind storm. We never leave our awning out if we are not using it. Far easier to just roll it than replace it..

RE: house battery concern

Chances are "nil" on getting new batteries by blaming the shop. The shop took full responsibility on causing the batteries to run down, but also said these lead acid batteries were capable of being depleted and recharged without damage. I agree about being able to run them to nothing, recharging and no damage. We have done that many times and our batterys usaly last 5-8 years. However leaving them for a long time like months is a problem.. We often used every bit from the batterys in our trailers and popups.

RE: house battery concern

As others said how long they were down may be a problem. However if they were up when taken in and ran down from lights ect and they plug it in and bring them up it may be a plus as running them down and recharging does need to be done a few times a year. Keeping them at a full charge full time and never running them down will make their life shorter also. I have found out over the last 40+ years of fussing with them in RV's and boats.

RE: Airstream with Single Holding Tank -- will it smell?

Years ago they didn't even have gray water tanks. The sinks and shower just dumped out onto the ground. That became illegal in 1974 or 1975. I added a gray water tank to our 72 Airstream in about 79 as the old drain it out on the lawn thing had became a problem..

RE: CA 199 from Crescent City, CA to Grants Pass, OR

If you are a freeway person driving the curves and roads of the Northwest can be pucker string country. If you are a back roads driver then roads like 199 are the norm. We drive lots around here that make 199 look like a wide easy road. I have driven 199 with a 35 footer pulling a trailer and thought it was nothing but then you should see where I was before that..

RE: Airstream with Single Holding Tank -- will it smell?

My last MH had the bathroom sink drain into the black tank. Had to remember to fill the sink's p-trap with water after dumping so gases wouldn't back up it. The water in the p-trap would be sucked out by the vacuum created when dumping. X-2
