RE: how does a 5th wheel track compared to TT

You will love how it tracks on the freeway. If you have an adequate truck, no more tail wagging the dog. When making corners or backing, remember where the hitch is. It is over the rear axle instead of on the bumper. I always use my hands when explaining this to a student, I'll try here with just words. With a bumper pull, when making a left turn say, think of how the bumper pulls the trailer forward and the kick out of the bumper pulls the trailer straight forward in the beginning of the turn. But with the 5th wheel, you don't have the bumper puller the trailer forward, it just follows over your rear axle. So it starts turning faster, which gives you more trail over with the trailer tires on the inside of the turn. As others have said, because of that, you have to go a bit further into the intersection before you start to turn. When backing, it will react a bit slower, the big thing is it takes a lot longer to straighten out. Kind of like going from a 12 ft. trailer to a 30ft trailer. Practice, practice, practice. Or take a class and practice, practice, practice. and enjoy!

RE: Do I need a bearing repack?

As some people have eluded to above, for piece of mind I'd at leaset check them and add grease if necessary. I wouldn't trust the factory to get it right. From then on you will know it is right and you won't have to repack them every year in the future.

RE: 31' to 36' pros & cons ?

We have a 40ft trailer and long bed CC truck. Long combo. But so far not much problem backing into just about any campground we have encountered out here in the west. If you are good at backing, you won't find too much difference, but it does track a bit more on the inside, and you will have to pull forward a bit further before backing. There are lots of tricks I use while teaching on how to back these long trailer/truck combos.

RE: Rv washer and dryer

Ventless doesn't mean that the moisture is kept in the machine, it means that it goes out the drain and drain vent instead of a standard dryer vent. For obvious reasons it is easier to plumb but doesn't dry quite as well.

RE: New chocks and new leveling boards ??

I just use 2x and 4x material. Easy for me, have it laying around after different projects around the house. Cheap, easy, stronger than the plastic ones. Not as light though, and the wood blocks don't have that diy look.

RE: Merging onto an Interstate

The big thing that I hope it makes you think about is when you see another RV trying to merge when you are driving, whether it be in your rv or just reg. vehicle, that you remember the issues and be nice and let 'em in .

RE: Turning radius of TT v Fifth wheel.

Some 5ers can turn more than 90 deg, but you don't want to do it much. They do track inside more due to the hitch being over the rear axles instead of the bumper. Takes a bit getting used to when backing, but fairly easy. Most trailers can turn sharper than the tow vehicle, so not a problem. A 36-38 ft fifth wheel towed by a 350 long bed takes four lanes to make a u turn in in most cases.

RE: Rear camera

Rear View Safety works great for me and have installed a few others too. Works great, like the audio too. So the backer can talk to me while backing. Hooked it up to my upfitter switch. You might want to make sure it is easy to remove the screen when not in use to keep it from being stolen thinking it is a GPS unit.

RE: Who drives a F-350 as their sole vehicle and likes it?

We have a Volvo SUV also. My wife actually likes the bigger seats and extra room, so we take the LB CC 4x4 dually most places. Gets 18-20 freeway but sucks around town, about 14-15. It is way smaller than my work truck was, 40ft straight frame fire truck coming in at 70,000lbs. Gets around town a lot better too. Dually doesn't really make much difference over SRW, but some Starbucks are out of the question.

RE: 5W with an office space

Just get one you like with recliners in the back and replace them with desk and chair. We replaced them with a sewing table for my wife. Works great in our rig, but it is a bit bigger than you are looking for.

RE: Truck

With a diesel, the 3.73 or similar ratio will be just fine for that weight trailer. Even a 15,000 trailer we have with the 3.73 rear end we were fine, even going over the moutains out here in the PNW. With a gas engine, yes, the 4.10's are a necessity. 1 tons are basically the the same as 3/4tons except they can carry a lot more payload. Important when loading the truck up with people, firewood, genny, and other camping gear, not just the trailer. Some even late model 3/4 tons have less than a 2000lb payload rating.

RE: Fifth Wheel Clearance

Get a new bed cover. I have the Bakflip and it is only about 1/4" above the bed rails. Works great. Long beds especially need 6" clearance. Raise the hitch first, then try pin if you need more.

RE: Which Truck?

seems like rating wise, the srw 350 will do the trick. If towing in mountains, the diesel is the better choice. Remember you lose power as elevation goes up with a gas truck. Just depends on if you think you may go bigger within the lifespan of the truck. The mirrors stick out further than the fenders on a dually, but it does make it a bit harder to make tight corners. But my dually crew cab is a lot easier to manuever than my work truck, 40ft. straight frame ladder truck weighing 70,000 lbs.

RE: Mounting back up camera

yea, never remove my cam either. But I do take out the monitor when not in use. It may look too much like a nice big GPS to some yahoo.

RE: $40,000 question

Have a great weekend! Couple of things if you get a new Ford. Save your money and don't get a stereo and get an aftermarket with built in GPS. Make sure you get the larger gas tank if there is an option, you will need it. The heated seats are really nice for long trips, and some even come with AC seats too. Most of the rest will be personal choices for sure. The 5th wheel prep is nice s in the spray in bedliner. Go all out and get a Bakflip bed cover and you will be all set. Stay with the 350/350 and have fun shopping.

RE: 5th wheel keys for main door

As said before, most of the keys are the same. Just stop at an RV dealer and grab another one.

RE: Slide blocks bathroom

I just taught a driving lesson in a brand new Keystone Cougar 280RLS. You couldn't get to the bathroom in that one. But you could get to the front bedroom. In ours, we can get to the bathroom and the bedroom, but no way to get to the galley without opening the living room slide at least a foot or so to squeeze by. once you do that there is plenty of room to get to the refer and table. Other than that we love it, so we put up with it.
