More Strugis 2010 I-74 / 52 - Mayberry folks can you help ?

I am putting together the waypoints for our ride out to Sturgis. I have traveled 52 up near Mt Airy many times but I cant remember an exit that has an easy off easy on gas stop.
I checked this great source of info no joy and I-74 isnt in my 05 version of "The Next Exit"
Can one of those living in that area recommend an easy off/on gas stop please.
Thanks and Merry Christmas !

RE: Sturgis 2010 - would appreciate help from SD friends.

Thanks ... Ive added your suggestion to the doc I now have going.
The route is a little difficult. Dont want to Mapquest or Google .... do the slab all the way out and back ... zzzzzzz ....
I know I have plenty of time ... but Im starting to look at routes. My thinking is to take interstates (the dash) to St. Louis to make some time, then maybe picking up parts of the Lewis and Clark Trail from St. Louis out to Piedmont, SD. How cool is that man ??!!??
The problem is I can find alot of stuff related to the trail .. but not a single map (yet) that suggests scenic driving routes end to end ... or at least from Missouri to South Dakota. ... I actually did find one ... but it doesnt give specific road numbers. It basically just says following the yellow line.
I would prefer country highways where speeds are at least 55/65, mainly, so that I do continue forward motion getting to the final dest in the allotted time. I also realize that there will be frequent slow downs as I pass through towns. ...you know man .... Wild Hog type roads.
Ill have to check feasibility ... but it looks like the trail cuts back and forth over interstates. So Im thinking that if I fall behind in time/mileage, Ill be able to jump back on the interstate if need be.
The states that I would be interested in would be Missouri, Kansas, Iowa/Nebraska border and South Dakota. ...looks like maybe the southern tip of Illinois also.
I have requested travel maps from those states. If the State maps dont give me joy, Ill head over to Borders to buy a truckers atlas of the US. Ive also got an email in at nps.gov asking if a driving route map is available. Not sure what else I can do to find those sweet roads. I do have to hit the scenic byways site.. thats next up on the list.

RE: Sturgis 2010 - would appreciate help from SD friends.

Not normal is why I want to go ... Im 46 and want to do the ride and experience some of the scenery before I get too old to enjoy it. Sturgis shouldnt be anything else but not normal ...
I found a cabin in Piedmont for $200 a night for 2 peeps .. thats $100 bucks a night a piece for me and my bro ... cable, ac, shower, kitchenette.
Thats real reasonable considering ... dont really care what it looks like ... just need a place to park the bike and get some sleep for a while. Its at a place called Covered Wagon Campground 12 miles outside of Sturgis just off 90.

Sturgis 2010 - would appreciate help from SD friends.

I want to attend the 2010 Sturgis ... I am searching all the "normal" sites but am looking for input from the locals.
Can you please provide campgrounds that have decent cabins for rent within 10-15 miles of Sturgis ... I would prefer not to stay right in Sturgis ... want to get some sleep at night ... :)
Thanks

I dont know how true it is .. but I heard that people were going in there at the end of lunch staying for hours and having dinner also ... so they've set a time limit ... I dont think Ive seen anything posted that suggests or supports that idea ... but I could see why they would do it.

RE: Whats the best way to test the heater on the driveway ?

no ... 2 amps in 12 hours should charge the battery to actually somewhere to 12 to 14.5 volts dc. All depends where you are when you start.
No kiddin - Keystone doesnt make batteries .. you dont know the history ... this Keystone is a problem ..... and did I ever mention how I maintain the battery ?
No ..
a separate inverter pulling dc from the 2 750amp truck batteries ..
Dont worry guys .. we can kill this post now... I got it ...
All you real smart guys can go back to being real smart guys ...
Again .. thanks to those who helpfully posted.

RE: Whats the best way to test the heater on the driveway ?

BFL13 ... DC TO AC INVERTER.
But .. the battery wont hold a charge... only a a year old ? I really wish I had never traded my Forest River on this Keystone. What a piece of******... different topic altogether ...
anyway ... I suppose Ill have to head out today and get a battery. The battery comes up to about 14.5 when connected to the truck .. but after charging yesterday at a slow charge, 2 amps for over 12 hours, stand alone voltage was only about 10vdc.
Ive camped all my life ... first RV ...an early 2000 Viking popup ... then the 05 Forest River ... now this 08 Keystone .. NEVER <- SEE THAT... NEVER had to replace a battery on either of the previous.
Thanks to those providing responses that actually helped.

RE: Whats the best way to test the heater on the driveway ?

Yep .. Im going to go out this morning and put my charger on and in fact, bring the charger with me.
I will also be boondocking on Tuesday night. I will be bringing my batter charger, my dc/ac converter, a spare space heater. I do have a generator .. but its for the home ... not sure I want to lug that around with me...

RE: Whats the best way to test the heater on the driveway ?

Well thanks for all the comments. I, of course, tried the obvious.
But the heater wouldnt kick on. Its kind of dimly lit, so I connected the 30 to 15 amp adapter allowing me to plug in the unit, provide better lighting then Id start to look at whats was going on.
Bink ! On goes the heater... at this point, dont care how or why ... All I really needed to know is / was that the heater is working so the girls have heat if they need it. ... Gives me something to read while Im on the thrown. :B
Thanks for all the replies.
ps .. all you comedians out there shouldnt give up your day job ... you'll starve :)

RE: Anyone using a 09 Dodge QC 6.7l to pull around 6k ?

well .. I dont lie about the mileage. Best Ive seen is 14.38 .. but as I mentioned doing it the dealers way ... I got 9.8 .. I never believe that overhead thing ...its always wrong
But be sure; as I mentioned, Ill be towing to Biloxi soon, I will fill up and log the mileage. Ill keep track of the amount of fuel I add after the intial fill up and log total miles when I get down there.
That should be a pretty accurate hand calculated method at least while towing.

RE: Anyone using a 09 Dodge QC 6.7l to pull around 6k ?

Well = Id always heard that the mileage was better and no question about the pull power. but all things being equal, buying a gasser compared to a diesel may be a wash. Ofcourse thats only an initial opinion. I havent owned the diesel long enough ...

RE: Anyone using a 09 Dodge QC 6.7l to pull around 6k ?

The mileage, for sure, is odd. The dealer told me to test it this way.
1. fill up to the click. Note Odometer reading
2. get on the interstate set the cruise for 70
3. drive 20 miles
4. fill it again to the click note mileage.
5. do the math.
I got 9.8 miles

RE: Anyone using a 09 Dodge QC 6.7l to pull around 6k ?

Most see to be getting what I am getting.... round 14 mix of country and NC city.
... and from what Ive read here from the Dodge owners is I should expect somewhere around 11-13 give or take which is a definite improvement from the 8 I was getting with the Mega cab gasser.
... and yes ... I am in a household of women .. sons in the military now ...and we will be heading to Biloxi to see him over the holiday .. but yes the girls .. wife, 2 daughters 12, 8 ..Cloe the dog .. peanut the cat ... thats why I continue to ride my motorcycle ... the only excuse for an escape :) .. really though .. wouldnt give it up for the world !
Thanks again for the input !!! Will let ya know what the MPG is. I dont log every fueling, but I do jot down miles and gallons of fuel pumped ...
